TwowheelinTim: fanbladesaresharp: Well the Mrs and friends will be at stock car races with the kids. I'm not a single-direction enthusiast so I'll be out in the hills at an old ranch my family has drinking beers, shooting guns, sitting in the river, BBQ or whatever with a cousin I haven't seen in a number of years, and other relatives. Akthough it was nearly 40 years ago on Mem Day weekend that this same cousin was bit by a rattlesnake at the same location. We'll avoid doing that.

Have you ever been to watch any of the kinetic grand championship? You're not too far from here if I recall...

Not so far. Hoping to catch the finish in Ferndale. Was going to race but a old coworker of mine and I didn't have time to build one from scratch and couldn't find a used one.

As a kid, it was only a day off from school.  No parade, no cookout, just a day.  I do more now, being married to a Navy brat.  We observe the original meaning behind it, not turning into a weekend to buy plants and a new grill, or shooting off fireworks.  Visit graves, and spend time with the kids.  It's the second Memorial Day of our son's service.

mama2tnt: chitownmike: ... Memoral day is a greeting card holiday....

I live here IN the very town of Hallmark, tyvm, and I must say that this is the most bullsh*t thing I've read yet today.

However, I shall step aside and let the veterans to whom this day is sacred have a (figurative, unfortunately) shot at you.

/pacifist, but respectful of those who choose to serve

Why can't we do Rememberance Day like the rest of the western world, on 11/11?
Having spent some years in a Commonwealth country, I get all confused.

stirfrybry: I get to enjoy an empty house for the holiday.
/working in new house doing final coat on the wood floors

I'm cutting and laying tile for a shower. Yesterday was plumbing all day. Wife and kiddo are on their way home from Omaha as we speak. I might grill up some pork steaks for dinner. She works tomorrow, but we have a graveyard about 2 blocks from our house that I walk frequently (it's HUGE, like 10-15 acres). So I'll probably take my son and dog, and we'll go lay a few flags and maybe have a teaching/learning moment. He's 2, so I don't know how much will stick, but it will be fun watching him (respectfully) run around the graveyard and put some flags up.

Because for us that's Veterans Day.

Which is different, somehow.

Because Memorial Day was a US thing to remember the lives of soldiers on both sides of the (un)Civil War

Dinner - mini pizzas, made with low-salt sauce, no-salt-added shrooms, garlic powder, low-salt cheese, and just one English muffin to plop it all on.  For dessert, ONE lone leftover thin mint GS cookie.  That's IT.  Nothing more, not even the head of cauliflower & broccoli I should be eating.

If I hear, one more farking time: "Oh, you're on a diabetic diet, therefore you can have all the diet foods you like!"
"Uh, no, that will KILL ME stone cold dead.  Fake sugars, and I'm allergic (they're made from alcohol), remember??"
"Oh.  Well, you can have X and Y and Z, all you like!"
"Still no, I'm also on the kidney diet, which nixes all of X, Y, Z, and their cousins and other close relatives."
"Oh.  OH.  Ummmmm...."
*sigh*
I'm fine, I'm just whining about it.  I'll go outside, find a stick, build a bridge, and get over it....eventually...

Gerald Ford Tough: Growing up, we always used to spend race day at my grandmothers. She had one of the huge C/Ku band satellite dishes in the backyard, and since we were in Indiana that was the only way at the time to get around the blackout. We'd start searching around noon to find a feed from the race, and more often than not we'd luck into a feed that went out with just video and no audio or commercials. Then the radio would go on to 1070 WIBC for the race audio.

Lunch would be thin cut steaks from cows my aunt raises. I still get a 1/4 beef from her every year, and you can't beat the taste of that beef - no hormones, no unnecessary meds, grain and grass fed. Mom would help cook but had a standing order every year for us to get her before Gomer sang. That Sunday would be the highlight of the year, and was like a mini family reunion. It was always a fun day to catch up with everyone, eat like you hadn't in a month and cheer on your favorite (or take bets on which lap Mario would slow down on). We knew grandma enjoyed having us all over, and we all enjoyed being there.

My grandma has been gone for almost 16 years now. I miss her so much every Memorial Day, because it brings those memories back. And while it's not quite the same, I try to keep some of the memories alive. I've got steaks marinating now for lunch, from my aunts cows (I had to squirrel them away in the freezer since a 1/4 beef goes pretty quick), and ribs are about to go in the smoker for later. I'll probably try to find an audio stream of the race to listen to later while I'm doing something inside, since it's going to be a hellish 94F here in central Indiana. We spent all day out in the sun yesterday at GeoWoodstock, and the child is battling a sunburn that would make a Marine wince. We've had our fill of heat for the year.

But I'll enjoy my steak, think of the fun times with grandma and around the appointed time, listen to Gomer sing thanks to the video I have saved in my YouTube account from the last year he did it. It's not the same, and I might even argue it's not even close, but it is tradition.

Great story. Sorry to rain on your parade but gomer  died last year.  May be waiting awhile for him to sing again

Today, I worked and slept. I was only going in for six hours, but work bought lunch for all of us that went in, so I decided to stay.
I'll work tomorrow. But I'm making holiday rate. Not terribly fun. But, it's nice to pad my bank account.

Years ago, there was a dirt track on the SW side of Milwaukee county called Hales Corners Speedway.  Every Memorial Day and Labor Day they had demolition derbies.  They were local traditions.  Back around '02 Menard's made the track owner an offer he couldn't refuse, so he sold out and '03 was the final year for HCS.  The owner was getting up there in age (he's still around) and the city grandfathered the track in so long as it remained in the family, but his son didn't want to continue.

I derbied there for years and finally in '03 I won my first and only feature.  A friend won the Labor Day feature, which was the final event at the track.

On a side note, they did one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen.  They only sold beer by the can.  Say you wanted a 6 pack... they'd put the cans in an empty 12 pack carton and top it off with ice.  Farking brilliant.

I always have fond memories of the race and Memorial Day celebrations. First time I saw a pair of naked boobies in real life. And not just one pair either. On that day I back a man and learned the true meaning of what it is to be an American. God bless you ladies.

Being lazy today.  Might go to Briscoe field in Lawrenceville to see Fifi the B29.  Or just have a drink at the Legion.

No reason.

I wish you all the best on the holiday, today.
