Folks out west are so uncreative at naming things.

Yeah, but they get Supergirl, I think, and she's goddamned cute.

Why have a smokestack in the first place?

dr.zaeus: Why have a smokestack in the first place?

I've never worked on cremation stuff but I'd imagine the stack serves to vent exhaust like you'd expect but the combustion is so clean you don't get visible smoke.

Uh, how are they supposed to operate a crematorium furnace without it sending exhaust out the chimney?  Or do properly operating crematoriums burn air and remains into unicorn farts?

To be fair I bet it smelt better then most of what propane-based BBQs can produce.

How does that smell any different than anything else near the J street pier? That whole area over there is a swamp.

TFA says a door on the crematorium was left open, so presumably a properly operating one fully combusts organic matter, meaning no organic molecules (hydrocarbons) escape to smell like something was cooking, rotting, and so forth.

New York, New Jersey, Virginia (the Queen), Maryland, the James river, etc.

I guess we're all quite uncreative now that I think about it.

It's just north of Chula Juana, if that makes you feel better.

Did someone say BBQ?

I drove through a massive black crematorium cloud once. I realized what it was. Didn't make my mouth water or anything.

I used to work down the road from a crematorium. The stench is nauseating.

The smoke has to go somewhere.   Why else would there be a chimley ?

I worked at a job site next to an animal crematory, and on the other side was a bakery. So the smell was burning hair or fresh baked bread depending which way the wind was blowing

Amelia Earhart's Black Box: I drove through a massive black crematorium cloud once. I realized what it was. Didn't make my mouth water or anything.

I rode my bicycle through a thick black cloud here a couple years ago. I went into the place and inquired if it was supposed to be burning so poorly. The guy stepped outside to look, blanched, shook his head, and said "no". He went into another room, presumably to shut it down. A couple minutes afterward, I left and it was no longer emitting the nasty smoke. I go by there fairly regularly and don't see it belching that nasty black smoke anymore. Turns out it was a pretty new facility and they were still learning how to run it so it burned cleanly.

If you can see the smoke, it's not burning (completely) right.

/CA emissions statutes FTW
