Wow- what a terrible idea. I don't care if it had its beginnings in the current or previous administration.

What's next? Selling ad space on military uniforms? Tanks? Jets?

If that's the case I sure hope Target doesn't become a sponsor.

Office Depot is printing and shipping the cards for free

Free? Advertising isn't free.  Why aren't we charging them out the ass for this?

But Tomlin said the company does not offer a veteran discount for those who have the card. "At this time, there is no discount tied to the ID cards," he said

Somehow I don't think they thought their cunning plan all the way through.

Maybe stores should just quit the marketing game of giving discounts to vets all the time in their attempt to prove themselves patriots?  Then the cards wouldn't be necessary.

Why does Office Depot hate the military?

FTFA Office Depot recognizes the sacrifices that our veterans have made the ton of money that can be made by unethically sponsoring a government program meant to make veterans lives easier because the idiots we elected can't be bothered to fund a few bucks for ID cards

What would be worse would be a sponsorship from Larry's Low-cost Limbs.

At least they still aren't stupidly putting your whole Social Security Number on the front.

An organization I belong to got a whole $8000 for printing ads on the back of our ID cards. Many members (myself included) cut the cards in half and mailed the pieces to headquarters. They took the hint.

This should be a violation of the anti-deficiency act, which is by the way a felony.

Federal agencies are not authorized to expend funds or perform functions other than those authorized by Congress and funded by Congressional appropriation.  Likewise federal agencies are not authorized to accept funds other than those which they are specifically appropriated by Congress. For antideficiency act purposes, trades of services are considered the same as exchanging money.

This is both: Nowhere in the VA's authorization/appropriation is it stated that part of the agency's mission is to sell advertising space to private sector entities.  Likewise nowhere is it authorized to accept free donations of goods/services.

If the VA somehow got a waiver or approval for this, then that waiver/approval process is flawed and needs to be revoked.

I'm not a "customer" when I use the VA facilities I am entitled to. I'm a VETERAN. This is insulting.

Cards like these are about two bucks in materials, labor and postage, sell for 3-4.

I'd wager my employer is probably doing the actual work on behalf of Office Depot. I'd check but I'm not plugged into that product line.

I was wondering when commercial advertising would come to government. Apparently it's started. Jackasses.

It's a terrible idea because all government-issued identification should be provided for free (via taxes).
