Yanny? Laurel? I heard, "Burn it. Burn. It. All. Down." Granted, I was listening to the squirrels and not the intertubes at the time, but really what's the difference?

Those spectrograms were illuminating.

I heard a change at about 1.6 from the left.  I suspect laural hearers either have lost all the highs from their hearing or have those ridiculous sub woofer systems.

I played it for my kids without telling them what to expect. Older kid heard Laurel right away. Younger kid heard Yanny. After older kid heard younger kid say Yanny, older kid could no longer hear Laurel.

Then I put my phone away and had dinner. You're all caught up.

Yeah, except the modulated crap that people are hearing as an "n" in Yanny doesn't really sound like an n.  It's just a swallowed vowel.

Some coworkers asked me to listen to the sound this morning.  I don't know, I heard 'Gary'.  I hadn't had any caffeine, though.

I wasn't given a choice beforehand or anything, just 'what name do you hear?'.

I donno, if I turn it all the way to the yanny direction I could start to hear it...but that means only with heavy distortion does "laurel" sound like "yanny."

I heard about this on the Howard Stern Show the other day. It annoys me I'm aware this exists.

It's science related to the phenomena of perception. Why wouldn't this be cause for journalism.

It's interesting how what you hear is influenced by what you already heard.  I had to move the slider a long way before it changed for me, then had to move it back over most of that distance before I heard the original sound again.  Later I found a point where I heard each in perfect alternation, but after about twenty repetitions I'd only hear one of them again.    At about that same point, I was able to hear whichever one I wanted to, by consciously listening for high or low frequencies.

If I adjust the slider to the point where it starts to change, I hear 'Gary' or 'Larry'.  Listening to the original from Vocabulary.com on good speakers, it's very clearly Laurel.  Also, now that I own good speakers, I've started to become an advocate for having good speakers, although, unless you're a musician, spending more than $100 on computer speakers is probably a waste.  They're still a huge upgrade on the $30 set that they replaced.

Marcus Aurelius: Who cares that the entire country is going down the toilet when we have entertainment such as this.

I respectfully disagree. I feel that anything introducing scientific processes and natural science to the general public is healthy. There is legitimate science going on under the veneer of viral vomit, and if even one person thinks to themselves, "Hmm, it's interesting that different tones register differently to different people," then all this is worth it.

Also, I played it backwards and it came up, "Satan" or Stupid".

I've heard both. This has been all over TV and on one channel I heard laurel and on another I heard yanny.
Not sure what that means. Maybe it has something to do with how they broadcast.

2018-05-17 12:36:51 PM
I heard Yanny clear as bell initially, and couldn't understand how anyone was hearing Laurel. As it continued to play, I started hearing it as Laurel, and now I can only hear it as Laurel.

2018-05-17 12:37:26 PM
They played this on a local radio station yesterday without prompting what it was about and I heard "yanrel", so you're all wrong.

But seriously, it's yanrel.
