As someone who lives in two places, one in the middle of goddamn nowhere and one in a major metropolitan area, my experience is that people are unhappy all over. Happiness has a lot more to do with how much money you have than where you live.

Also, ignorance is not bliss. I've met a lot of ignorant people and almost all of them are miserable SOBs waiting for the sweet release of death.

Yep. That's not always a bad thing, either. Anyone who has spent the day fishing or hiking or weekend camping or doing any activity away from the constant WATCH THIS LISTEN TO THIS READ THIS OUTRAGE is going to come out of it with less garbage ping ponging around in their heads.

It's one reason I love the outdoors here in Arizona.

That's Canada.

In the U.S.A., the rural people have had Fox News and the GOP constantly telling them how miserable they are for so long that they're a lot less happy than urbanites.

While that's very true, that's not really what I mean by "ignorance." That's a break, and it's relaxing precisely because you're not ignorant.

Which is exactly why more of us should almost completely and permanently unplug from the round-the-clock news-and-political-squabbling-outrage cycle. Your limbic system won't be constantly triggered by anxiety, anger, and indignant rage, and as a result, you'll be healthier, happier, and will have more time to focus on truly important things like family, friends, and hobbies.

Start with the politics tab on Fark - avoid it completely for a week and see how you feel. I guarantee you'll feel better.

This. I think it is due to being outside around animals and plants, and not being around as many people.

Most of my friends I met in college who came from small towns were very happy people.  Their families were also very nice.  I think there is something to this.  Since then I have retreated back to the gilded walls of American suburbia where every is always pissed off about what their HOA is or is not doing.

I've made the switch and couldn't be happier.

Until a few years ago, I'd been in big cities my entire life, most recently working in Philadelphia and living just outside the city limits.  We've been in rural Virginia for almost four years, and other than my teenage daughter (who's fundamentally unhappy wherever she happens to be, but that's a different issue), we all prefer it here.

But that's just us.  I don't doubt that plenty of people like the frenetic pace of big city living, and if that's what makes them happy, more power to them.  But after living here, I can't see ever moving to a big city again.  In fact, my wife is already looking for a house that's even more remote than we have now, with more land.

I moved from the big city to the beach and couldn't be happier.  Sure, there isn't as much to do, but that's why I have cable TV and heroin.

When I don't have net/cable, and am 10+ miles from the nearest human being, I enter a level of ignorance and isolation that can only be described as BLISS.  This has also been reported by people hiking mountains, sailing in boats, and other activities of relative isolation.  Being dumb is terrible.  But ignorance is bliss.
