OK, yeah, the texting guy's an asshole, but if the woman's "worst fear" is being seated next to somebody who's uncomfortable because she's so large, she should either pay to upgrade to a bigger seat or buy two seats. Also, she should probably avoid looking at people's phones when they're texting. The bottom line, though, is that if a single asshole has the power to bring you to tears and utterly ruin you to the point where you must rely on some random white knight to save you, you're very poorly equipped for life.

Also, I fail to see how this reflects badly on United at all. They even gave the guy who intervened free drinks. What are they supposed to do, put the mean texting man in time out? Grow up.

After 10 minutes, Phillips was surprised to see someone seated behind her, later identified as Chase Irwin, tap the man's shoulder and say, "Hey, I need to talk to you."
"We are switching seats. Now," Irwin said, according to Phillips. After the passenger seated beside her asked why, the man replied: "You are texting about her and I'm not putting up with that."
"[He] comes and sits next to me and is shocked when he sees me crying," Phillips wrote. "He asked if I saw the texts and I nodded yes. He encouraged me not to let that guy get to me and that everything was going to be fine," she said.

If ever a pick up line was going to work ...

How is this United's fault, subby?  The guy sitting next to her was a passive-aggressive dickwad.  United has no control over that.  Other than kicking him off the plane, I suppose...

After reading this thread, I'm sadly wondering, what's the texter's fark handle?

Because it's pretty clear there's a lot more sympathy here for the villain of the story than the victim.

/Also, WTF is United part of the headline? Is it because they did next to nothing in response?

You know how I can tell you didn't read the article? It's because of what you wrote.

The guy held his phone where she could see, used an extra large font, and had his screen on as bright as it could get. He made sure she could see it, that was what he seemed to be trying to do. He made it so obvious that the guy sitting behind him was also able to read them and that guy stepped up to help out.

The texting dud was certainly an asshole but I think we all can agree that being stuck next to a fat smelly person on a plane sucks. Especially when they are spilling into your seat space.

It seems as if the texter was passive aggressively making sure the text could not be missed. I doubt everyone was so enthralled with him that they just had to see what he was texting.

The rules might be different for very overweight people, but this does not generally work.

If a person does not show up for that seat they will put someone else in it, even if you have the ticket for it.  There was a stink a few months ago over this very issue.

I have my screen on maximum brightness all the time and I've seen plenty of people using larger fonts, particularly older people like this guy. They were on a plane, he didn't have to be holding it in front of her face for her to see it. I do also wonder how the guy behind happened to see the text.

I feel for the woman, because I have a relative that uses a tablet for everything.  And has the font on the largest setting, and usually the high contrast setting as well.  It makes it simple for her to connected, but it also makes it easy for everyone around to read as well.  She regularly checks her email, her checking account and credit card balances, and of course, Facebook whenever she stops for a few minutes.  Her kids are constantly telling her to put it away, but like any kid with a new toy, she is not about to restrict herself.  It's a source of ongoing discussions about how to get seniors to surrender their independence with car keys, housing, and now freaking electronics.  The tables have surely turned.

Old people are the worst

They've already lived enough of life to have realized that it is meaningless.  That having children is just perpetuating and magnifying human misery for future generations.  That there is no purpose to life but sorrow and increasing discomfort.  They see the young and fall into depression, knowing that their naive expectations are going to be cut down and smashed, one sorrowful loss after another.  They know that if any young person is to have a fighting chance at facing and accepting the dreadful glare reality, then life must not be sugar-coated for them.  Someone - someone wise with the baleful experience of years - must slap the silly lust for life right out of them to clear their vision and make them see the truth.

Thought policing is now okay? The guy sent a private text message, not a publicly viewable Facebook post. Maybe that was his harmless way of dealing with the stress of air travel, but instead he is supposed to internalize everything? That will end well.

Don't read other people's private messages and wear more deodorant. Problem solved.

Welcome to Fark public transportation.

United actually fared pretty well in this story, comping the hero drinks, etc.  Only thing they could have done more was to make a offer to Coffee-Tea-or-Me the hero, or sent dickweasel to ride with the pets in cargo.  They could have been dicks by not allowing hero to switch seats, which, technically, is a no-no.

Devil's advocate -- under current law, your cellphone data is considered private -- although there are cases up in various courts, including the Supreme Court, to decide the matter. Dickweasel could possibly argue that "smelly fatty" invaded his privacy by positioning herself to view his screen.  I think this would be a good case to go before one of the various TV judges.
