"The police report said it was fired from either a poorly maintained gun, an old gun, a sawed-off gun, or a gun equipped with silencer," he said. "That could answer a couple questions there, why i did not hear it."

Or it could have been a .22 Short from a long way away, or a .22 CB Cap from much closer.

Neighbor of mine shot himself with a .22 Short not 50 yards from where I was sitting, with an open window, and I didn't hear it.  And a .22 CB Cap is damn-near silent out of a rifle.  Or it could have been a .22 LR fired at something hard a mile or more away, that ricocheted and hit him.  They aren't that loud to begin with.

I don't see how a poorly maintained gun, a sawed-off gun, or an old gun is going to make the shot quieter.

Interesting that the bullet seems to be hexagonal.

Also, I'm going with the "someone was shooting in the quarry, hit a rock, bullet ricocheted" theory.  It's really flattened on the nose, and it didn't do anything to his skull, it just broke skin.  I'm betting that nose flattening was already there when it hit him.  Would also explain why he didn't hear the shot.

It's also a good reminder to be sure what you are firing at isn't going to cause a ricochet.

I think if he had been running with a gun in his hands this wouldn't have happened.  The start of every race should not be with one gun from the starter's pistol but every runner firing an AR-15 in the air Hamas-style and shouting God is Great until their magazine is spent, at which time they reload and run the race.

They didn't bother to mention where on his head he was hit and didn't say what he ran in the Boston.

Athlinks has him at 2:50 in 1979 at Boston.  Dude is pretty badass.

I can't be expected to read the article AND watch the video, can I? I was wondering it if was on top and it might be someone carelessly shooting into the sky.
