One suspect was described as a black man with a heavy build, 26 or 27 years old with a dark complexion and mohawk-style haircut.

Sounds like he was assaulted by a time-traveling Grace Jones.

Sorry, but there's no way that that's a place where an out-of-towner "runs out of gas". I smell BS.

It said he ran to his home to call the police.  Where did you get "out-of-towner" from?

I was going to say Mr. T, but I suppose he never actually shot anyone. Maybe if the guy's car was shot and blew up without actually hurting the guy.

Lots of black people have light-colored skin, so "dark complexion" is often a useful descriptor.  Also, "swarthy" is a dog whistle.  Why are you defending racist assumptions and language?

strawman, n.: an intentionally misrepresented proposition that is set up because it is easier to defeat than an opponent's real argument.

Please stop torturing that poor word to try to make it say what you want.

Was it a white guy that got shot? Does that mean The Race War® has begun? Followup question, can I shoot white people in addition to brown or do I need to stick to pre-defined racial boundaries? What about chinapeople? Can I shoot them?

Actually, here, I'll humor you:

In this case, you're taking a word (swarthy:
adjective
dark-skinned.
"she looked frail standing next to her strong and swarthy brother")
used strictly in the sense of its primary definition by a Farker who has a pretty much iron-clad history of being anti-racist and trying to turn an innocuous comment into some race-baiting gobbledygook. Given actual context, your righteous indignation is utterly baseless; sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Calm down and stop trying to start shiat.

I would not describe Grace Jones as having a heavy build.  She was rail thin.

Oh come on, you can't narrow down an adult's age to two years based on looks alone.  I've met 22 year olds that look like they're 30 and 35 year olds who look like they're in their mid 20's.

How do people run out of gas? The warning light isn't a "time to fill up soon" reminder. It's a "dude, you should have already got gas by now" reminder.

Back in college I drove a craptastic Chevette, acquired for exactly $300, in which the gas gauge didn't work.  Every now and then I put 5 bucks in.  But it was always a guessing game, and I usually didn't have enough pocket money for a full tank.

Later in life, even after I could afford a fully operational vehicle, but still young enough to be impatient, I would flirt with empty just because I always seemed to have better things to do than pump gas.  I knew "really" empty was slightly below 'E' on the gauge and I would act accordingly.  I probably pulled into gas stations using the drops left in the fuel intake line a few times.

In this country we call it 'coasting in on fumes'

Depends on where you are; if you're on 80 in Nevada or Wyoming, yeah. In town. not so much; mine lights up when there's about 35 or 40 miles to go on the tank and I'm never more than a mile or two from a gas pump.

OTOH, I've found that if you have a newer car that predicts how much further you can travel without refueling (based on driving conditions as well as remaining fuel) you can take that as near-gospel. One day I pushed that down to 2 or 3 miles out of curiosity and found that even then I still had a bit more than a gallon in the tank when I refilled.

My brother had an older mini van and his wife was driving at the time. Fuel light comes on and he says to her that she should get gas. She responds "computer says we still have 30 miles" and goes past the exit. This continues every exit until she says "computer says we have 5 more miles. We can make the next exit." Well no. No they didn't.  So about 2.5 miles from the exit they are out of fuel. My brother now hikes to the gas station who doesn't have fuel cans, but they do have 2 liter bottles of soda. So he empties one out and fills it with gas and hikes back. It wasn't enough to get the van started, so he had to make the trip again. He was....not pleased.
