There can be only one. Maybe two. Okay, three, but that's it. Oh, fine... there's not really a limit.

She's the same age as me?
What the hell went wrong in her life that she looks like that and is threatening people with swords?
Was there a breaking point or was she always just a little off?

Article fails without a picture of the sword.

Given the usual track record of weapons-in-the-news, I'm kind of curious about what it was, exactly, that the crazy lady was waving around.

A buddy of mine answered the door one time wearing his SCA armor.  They backed off his front stoop and speed-walked out of the neighborhood.

Glad I read the article though.

Court documents show Dorantes waved a "viking style sword" at the DCS worker after they showed up to pick up items for the child.

Yeah, as a sword enthusiast I'm always frustrated when articles like this don't bother to show pictures of the sword. Not that it's really necessary since 90% of the time it's either some cheap stainless wallhanger or Cold Steel piece of garbage.

I've taken blacksmithing courses, read quite a bit about medieval combat, and played RPG video games for the last 30 years, and I'm not sure I could identify a "viking-style sword". Like, I'm sure they have a particular style, but of the familiar sword "shapes" (scimitar, katana, gladeus), "Viking" doesn't jump out as memorable.

Viking swords were Frankish swords - they probably had their own before they encountered the Franks, but once they did, they imported the Frankish ones, because they were so much better. What's fun is that a lot of counterfeit Frankish swords have been found in Scandinavia - lower quality domestic swords made in frankish style with pseudo-frankish names stamped on the blades - the "Louis Futon" handbags of the 9th century.

I'm disappointed. I had to lie my way through a 10 question survey to not even get to see the sword in question.

People actually live in Nashville? I thought it was just a kitschy tourist town and everyone went home to Columbus at night.

I highly recommend the prime rib buffet at The Seasons Lodge, though. And the apple butter and biscuits at the Nashville House. They're both worth dodging crazy sword ladies to get to them.

I don't think you want to be stabbed with a even wallhanger.  Just because it isn't something you want to use to go charge Alfred's remaining troops, doesn't mean it is something you want to see in the hands of crazy (especially assuming you aren't carrying a sword or shield yourself).

A quick GIS for "viking sword" showed a bunch of images all more or less looking like the following:

The catch is that these swords were popular all over Europe during the viking age, and hardly peculiar to vikings.  I'd guess that if you wanted an effective modern reproduction of viking weaponry (especially if you didn't want to lug a shield around) you should go with the dane axe (the "cheap" all one piece, not the Matt Easton special.  Both are relatively historical).

Yeah, obviously wallhanger can be dangerous, it's just kinda a let down to see how poor people's tastes in swords is. I mean, if someone has to stab me, they could at least go through the trouble of getting a decent sword to do it with.

MythDragon: "Viking style" sword? Is that the new "assault style" rifle or "pitbull style dog?

Similar to the ubiquitous "AK-47 as identified by journalists" meme, I suspect the author was at a loss when trying to describe the weapon in question. It obviously wasn't a single-edged weapon with a curved blade, because those are all "samurai style swords" to journalists. It wasn't something easily identified as a machete, either. It's probably a straight-bladed, double-edged sword of some sort. Since this doesn't meet the expectations of the author, they probably asked around and went with what the editor thought would generate interest.

Author- "Sir, this one guy says it looks like a broadsword."
Editor- "We can't say 'broadsword'- the dames would go nuts! What's a broadsword?"
Author- "Um ... it's a straight-bladed, double-ed ..."
Editor- "Never mind the details- who used 'em?"
Author- "Historian says just about everyone in Europe in the middle ages. Knights, Vikings ..."
Editor- "Vikings, huh? Great! Run with that."

Actual blade might be Roman, Chinese, Spanish, Frankish, Viking, Kirby, or some weird mash-up made from whole cloth by any of several swordsmiths who cater to weirdos like me.

I'm confused. I didnt think there were any waterways in the area that would allow a longboat access from the sea.

I'm shocked, shocked I tell you! This may be the first time in years and years that someone threatened someone else with a sword, and the idiot "reporters" DIDN'T call it a samurai sword.
