128-year-old woman

Oh, look, an old person claiming to be older than everyone else on planet Earth, then turning out not to be.  This is a new and original angle.

If she's really 128 years old, then why is the image in the article a picture of a 37-year-old Russian woman?

You notice these people always come from places where there are no reliable records from back when they claim to have been born.  Same with a lot of areas where record numbers of people live longer than everyone else.  Okinawa had all of its birth records from before 1945 destroyed in the War for example.  Claiming to be dead older sibling who died during the battle, but got pension from dead husband who died in another battle would be convenient.

Russian women all look like that after they hit 23.

Not even a little older but 10 years older. I recall a fark article a month ago the day the last person born in the 1800s died.

My Grandpa made it to 95 after losing his final battle against cancer.  And my Mom told me that shortly before he died, he told her "There is such a thing as living too long."

At that point, most of the little struggles go away. You're still left with yourself. If you were a miserable person before, you'll probably be a miserable person after. Unless of course, you decide to spend some of that on therapy. ;) Then things are pretty farking awesome.

Those photos don't show her in a wheelchair, so there's no way in hell she's 128.

The next year (81), I had a stay in the hospital that ran more than 2 weeks. If we hadn't had health insurance, we'd have been bankrupt. We'd have been bankrupt these days regardless of health insurance because of limits and co-pays.

What a world we live in. Someone somewhere might have an easier time than I did: burn it all down!!!

Oops. Wrong thread. I thought I was in the 1980 health care thread. Apologies.

There are two types of Russians, exemplified by her and Putin.

If you aren't downtrodden or corrupt, you've chosen not to be Russian.

So it says at the end of the article that the current oldest person in the world is 117 so I'll take that to mean they don't believe her.

Amazingly for passport issued in 2003 she would have been a hundred and fourteen years at that time that should have been a bigger story then

At 128 in Russian years that pegs her at 64, which is what Kellyanne Conway will look like in a few years.

The "oldest person who ever lived" record bugs the hell out of me. Give or take some 200,000 years of human history, 90% of which is entirely undocumented, and you're confident enough to say which one person lived the longest? I get that they frequently qualify the record with "documented" but that doesn't make it any less asinine an assertion. You have no farking way of knowing.

SoundOfOneHandWanking: Her daughter supposed reached 104?

And died 5 years ago.  That means the daughter was born in 1909. Say that this woman had the daughter at 15.  That means she would have been born in 1894 making her around 124.  Still the oldest person to ever live.

/that is assuming the daughters age was accurate.
//it probably wasnt.

You know that old Jewish saying, right?

Hard to believe her eyes lasted that long, but then again the amount of light that Russia gets that far up is trivial compared to anywhere else. Maybe her longevity, however old she really is, is attributable to avoiding damaging solar rays.

'I have not had a single happy day in my life,' Ms Istambulova said. 'I have always worked hard, digging in the garden. I am tired. 'Long life is not at all God's gift for me - but a punishment. 'Looking back at my unhappy life, I wish I had died when I was young. 'And now I am not living, I am just dragging through.'

By Russian standards that sounds quite happy.

Meh, if an old Russian woman wants to be 128, who cares? Like the award will make her younger? My grandmother wanted me to be a doctor, so by the end, when she did remember me, I was.

eyup. My dad made it to 98 1/2. The last 3 years of his life were very conscious, sharp. He lived an incredible life, full of adventure, family, commitment and fulfilment. He contended that past a certain point, life was just waiting to die. I think about this a lot, about Oregon, and Switzerland, helium. and youth, in Asia.

I am hoping laws will change, across the land in the next 20 years.

Chechnya is at 43 degrees N, so around New England.

Also, no way she lived that long there. There was literally no healthcare at all in that part of the Soviet Union towards the end and until somewhere in the late 2000'satthe earliest.

Muslims don't drink, so maybe she's in her 90's?
