gunther_bumpass: brantgoose: Anybody remember the old geezer who claimed that the authorities could fly him out in five minutes if the pyroclastic flow came his way? He is now in a safer place, between 45 and 100 feet below solid rock.

Apparently he underestimated the ease of flying a helicopter into a volcanic eruption, as well as the willingness of the authorities to spend the money and take the risks to save his sorry ass.

Harry Truman? I don't think he really wanted out in any case.

He was never going to leave. And I think he's under about 600 feet or so of dirt. I've seen the former spot from the rim. The whole side of the mountain slumped over him.

stvdallas: The anniversery is 2 days away, however I remember a Sunday morning driving with my dad and brother through downtown Oak Harbor with the windows down in a pickup when we heard a loud boom.  We thought it was the Navy there testing a weapon or something.  We found out later that day that Mt. St. Helens had exploded.  Oak Harbor is 200 miles away.

I have a relative that currently lives there and was in Yakima the morning it blew. He was stuck there a week.

X-Geek: I don't think the heavy stuff is going to come down for quite a while.

Well, 2-foot rocks aren't light. Even pumice has mass. From the HVO page today:

"This morning dense ballistic blocks up to 60 cm (2 feet) across were found in the parking lot a few hundred yards from Halemaumau. These reflect the most energetic explosions yet observed and could reflect the onset of steam-driven explosive activity. Further observations are necessary to asses this interpretation. Additional such explosions are expected and could be more powerful."

The parking lot is almost to the edge of the caldera, though. So, Id guess close to where this was taken (I think this is the one from the rim trail and not Jagger, I should have noted things better).
