The life of a repo man is always intense.

I repo'd a car once, way back when I worked for a Chevy dealership. It was kind of interesting.
Pretty sure my neighbor had his Jeep repo'd a few weeks ago. Flatbed showed up at around 11:30PM and took it away. It reappeared a few days later. Ever since then, at night it gets parked in the garage or in the driveway with another car parked in front of it.

Repo men never went anywhere. If you don't pay your car note, they've always been more than happy to come take it back.

The surprising return of the repo man

In what way is this surprising? Displaying your self-identified socioeconomic status through conspicuous consumption beyond your actual means has never been more fashionable.

If you can't deduct it as a business expense, you don't need a truck that big.

How is a licence plate reader fundamentally different than facebook's facial-recognition algorithm, or a smartphone's ability to "scan" one of those 2D barcodes? Assuming they're comparing their scans against their own database of information, I don't see any reason whatsoever why this should be some sort of "forbidden" tech

Friend of mine is a repo man....started out in the towing business and got tired of that, so he switched his company over to just repos and makes BANK!  Has three trucks that run 6 days a week (his policy is he won't take a car on Sundays).  He has the license recognition cameras and the computer too.  I've gone on repos with him and it is crazy the number of vehicles out there with active "hits" on them.  He can go to one of the three Walmarts in the area and snatch 4-5 cars a day at ~$300 each.  Cruise through the parking lot, computer pings, his trucks have remote controlled lifts and cameras, so he can back up, lift, jump out and check the VIN and be back in the truck and gone in under a minute.

/don't buy more than you can afford
//pay your farking bills

A friend of mine was doing repo work for a while.  A few surprising things I learned from him:  He said many times, people were relieved to be rid of the hassle.  Many of the Buy-Here Pay-Here places install locators in the cars before they sell them so they can be found easily.  These places also order up repos far more frequently at tax time so they have cars to sell to the people using their refund money.  You can't just go around hooking up to cars, the financial institution has to order the repo.  And in our State at least, if the vehicle is on private property and the owner protests the repo, you have to unhook the vehicle and leave it.  It's a tough business at $250 to $400 per repo.  You'll not get rich in that line of work.

I always wondered how so many people can afford such nicer cars than mine and I guess the answer is they can't.

Financing a car is so much more expensive than buying it outright.  First you have the interest on the loan and then you have the added cost of the extra insurance you have to carry.  I don't know why people waste their money doing that.

I bought one new car in my entire life and it was 16 grand.  I paid 7 grand in cash and wrote a credit card convenience check for the rest.  It was good for 0% apr for 15 months, so I split that into 15 payments and that was that.  That was in '06 and I'm still driving the car and have no plans to get a new one any time soon.  Before that, I was driving junk cars that were less than $500.   I don't understand why people put themselves in such debt for a car.

I get 0% interest, and my insurance rates are pretty much the same regardless. I'm older, have better credit, better rates on insurance, and know the dealers have an incentive to get people into loans with the manufacturer lending. You can sometimes get 0% interest, even when they aren't offering it, if you push. It isn't good for a lot of people, but I just leave the money in an account and have an automatic electronic payment applied every month.

If they're going to let me use their money for free, I'll take it.

Because the ROI on the money I would have had to withdraw to pay cash was much bigger than the 1.5% rate that I financed at.

Day 1 of late payment, the vehicles will be pre-programmed to re-route a person commuting to work to pull up at the finance office so the bank can kick them right out.

Most of that data is owned by Digital Recognition Network (DRN), a Fort Worth company that is the largest provider of license-plate-recognition systems. And DRN sells the information to insurance companies, private investigators - even other repo agents.

Do they sell to civilians who want to mine the data for patterns of law enforcement vehicle movement?

Modern trucks (and their prices) astound me.  When my mom bought a truck in 1989, she asked the salesman if it was available with power seats and power mirrors.  He laughed at her and said "No ma'am - it's a truck."

Now, it's "woodgrain this" and "leather that," with Bluetooth entertainment systems, navigation, power everything and a price tag to match.

Deep Contact: What happens to the car loan after repo? Must kill your credit rating.

It's a "secured loan," and the vehicle is the security for the loan.  After it's repossessed, the car will generally be sold at auction.  If the car sells for less than what you owe, you still owe the balance (along with repossession fees).  If the car sells for more than what you still owe on it, you get the excess amount back (again, minus any repossession fees).

SoCalChris: Repo men never went anywhere. If you don't pay your car note, they've always been more than happy to come take it back.

Some of the less reputable "buy here/pay here" places don't bother checking whether you have paid.  If they need to sell that car again, expect the repo man to show up.  Near as I can tell, the business model is very similar to payday loans.
