When I was in 3rd grade our school Arbor Day celebration included a balloon launch. Even as a child I thought it was funny.

I *think* this is English.

"A balloon had gotten somehow entwined in his mane, and he had spooked and freaked out with it in his mane of course because I'm sure it was flapping around and gone through a fence," Brogden said.

So it's like when a cat gets its head stuck through the handle of a plastic grocery bag?

Just make sure you return them from whence they came.

As silly as releasing buring garbage into the air is, Loi Kratong in Chaing Mai is a celebration worth taking in.

I thought Loi Kratong was that martial art too violent for the MMA.

They get depressed, too.  When I was about 11, my parents bought a pony and left it tied up in a field that was right next to a stream with a steep embankment.  Sure enough, the horse, seeing the opportunity and evaluating its situation in life, hung itself.

I'd believe Mylar can cross the Atlantic.  Back in the 1970s we released balloons due north of Baltimore and at least one made it to Europe (or possibly the card was mailed to friends/family in England or Ireland).  This was the old fashioned "rubber" type that lasted for days, the mylar balloons lasted for weeks.
/I think they stopped releasing them while I was still in school
//first year we did it (well, for me) "up, up and away in my beautiful balloon" was popular and played when we released them
///yes, I am that old.  Now get off my lawn.

I've found at least two in the middle of Shenandoah National Park. Just out in the middle of nowhere. Both were red, but neither were attached to a clown.

I camp and drive through the desert east of San Diego frequently and I've never failed to return home without at least one farming balloon.

I thought they were re-used as condoms by frugal wood elves.

The latex balloons do biodegrade, usually between 6 to 36 mos.  The mylar ones don't.

Either way,  some animals try to eat them and can die from it. So, best to avoid releasing them.

Aluminized Mylar will show up on various radars, it is what radar jamming chaff is made from.

I used to live near now defunct Pease AFB in NH. When the wind was right and my kids had birthdays, I'd launch a few in hopes they'd go over the base and radar troll them.

I've got this really funny story about those things.  But I can't share it for fear of prosecution.  Let's just say don't mess with them during the dry months.

Assuming we mean the rubber ones, I always figured they ascended until they burst from the lower outside pressure and then fell down like...well...an uninflated balloon.

My scientific basis for this? Buy a bag of Fritos in Vancouver (sea level) and see what it looks like when you get to Calgary (4,000 feet).
