Wow.  A report on an exploding E-cig that isn't a hit piece on vaping.  I'm shocked.

Guaranteed that this wasn't some gas station cigalike though.  This was almost guaranteed to be a mech mod with 1 or more shiatty batteries being forced to pull more sustained amperage on a super sub-ohm (<0.2ohm) atty than they were designed to handle.  Either that or a battery that wasn't shiatty but had damage to the wrap that caused it to make contact with the inside of the mod causing it to short.  I've seen too many people keep using batteries with damaged wraps.  That's just dumb.

Lotsa breaking business news coming out of St. Pete.

Yep, If you're going to hold a battery up to your face, don't fark with it unless you really know what you're doing. Film at 11.

hmm with those kind of injuries, I'm guessing something triggered a thermal runaway, battery contents expanded covering ventilation hole, then the enlarging battery and trapped gases turned the ecig into a pseudo pipebomb.

e-xcellent.

This would make a great stop-smoking product.... there is a random 1% chance that the product will explode. Wouldn't make people stop smoking - but might slow them down and make them think.

It sounds like cause of death was from a piece of shrapnel, so I'm guessing most of those burns were post-mortem. Still doesn't sound like a fun way to go.

I no longer use it at all, but e-cigs allowed me to finally quit smoking after 20 years. I don't understand the hate they get. My girlfriend quit this year using the same setup I had (Smok).

I had tried every other way to quit smoking, but with the e-cig I quit within 2 weeks of buying it and haven't smoked since.

Reminds me, I was looking up dry vape reviews because I was considering it, and found some vape forum thread of a guy discussing his experience so far with it.  And this one other forum goer was just going off on him about being a shill for big tobacco and shiat.  At one point the guy who started the thread just gave up and was like, "Okay, I've explained the differences, and admitted it's not perfect, but for some people it's a valid harm reduction tool on the way to quitting smoking or compared to smoking in general.  Let's just walk away."  And the other guy, I shiat you not, responds with, "Oh, I have walked away.  Walked away from Big Tobacco."  I honestly did not think it was possible to be that much of an annoying douche without being a South Park character.

I had 3 cigarettes in a pack when I bought my first kit in 2013. I still have those 3 smokes in a drawer somewhere for some reason.

I smoked for 25 years, and vaping allowed me to quit instantly.  Is it "good" for me? No, but it's way less bad for me.  There are no known carcinogens in my juice, (reputable retail only, no home brews or online stuff) no evidence of 2nd-hand risks, and my lung function is miles better than it was. My nicotine addiction is still an issue, but on balance Is say it's a major improvement.

Hate all you want, but it worked for ME and that is literally all I care about, period.

Dry herb vaporizer, uses convection heat (preferably, some still use conduction, which can cause searing/burning of the material) to pull vapor out of dry ground plant material.  The material isn't actually burned so you avoid the majority of additional chemicals in tobacco (about 1/1000th of the amount as from smoking) and all of the chemicals that are produced by burning (the formaldehyde analog, which is a by-product of the combustion).

Not necessarily so. Lithium batteries store an enormous amount of energy. For kicks, I once charged a laptop battery containing 9-18650 batteries and shot it with a .22. The battery pack was on a berm. The result was a grenade-like detonation that left a hole larger than a 5 gallon bucket.

In 20 years or whenever we come up with a replacement for lithium ion, people will be saying "You made batteries out of WHAT?"  It's going to be like people regard arsenic-based cosmetics now.

Undoubtedly.  Until then, I'll take my chances. Nearly everyone on the continent has a lithium ion battery of some sort, and more people win millions in the lottery than get killed by their batteries.

In the category of "shiat I worry about" it's not even in the top 1000.
