Pista: In fairness he quit after keeping Palace up rather then getting canned

I could not tell if he quit this time or if he was sacked because the article was rather dubious.  I found out about this development because of Arlo White's Twitter feed.

/was not sure if "Big Sam pulls out" would have been a more accurate headline

Yeah he jacked it in which was a surprise to a lot of Palace fans after he saved their season.
He then said he had no ambitions to return to the game for a while & a few months later he was installed at Everton.
Along with his named-meat pie freezer

As I recall, there was a carrot and a stick with that Everton offer.  The carrot was he would get to shape the team as he saw fit for a long term deal, but the stick was he had to finish in the top half of the league, or at least avoid relegation.  Apparently, neither was good enough for the Toffee fan base.

Everton supporter since 1980 here, I'm just kind of numb to this kind of stuff by now. When Romelu Lukaku left to *cough* win titles *cough* at Manchester United (translation: have huge piles of money deposited in to his bank account), I thought "Here we go again".

The constant upheaval at Goodison is depressing and boring, but hey, they haven't been in the second division since 1954, there's always that factoid to trot out. Jeebus.

Are we going to have a thread for Atletico beating Marseilles?

On paper, Everton does have decent talent. But then you look again and realize it's chock full of either slow, "creative" midfielders who are borderline useless outside of taking free kicks (Gylfi, Klaasen, etc), and attacking players with frightening injury histories (Bolasie, Walcott).

Big Sam may have done the job in his atypical boring, negative fashion, but that was a weird, flawed roster to work with.

I have no love or hate for Everton, but when Lukaku left, I knew they were going to struggle greatly, especially without Coleman.  Rooney was not enough to make up for it.  The team showed one flash between Koeman getting sacked and Big Sam taking charge, and out of the gate, they rattled off some decent football to get out of the relegation battle, and then it just looked lackluster.  I'm not blaming Big Sam for that necessarily, but the team felt empty without a consistent striker.  Calvert-Lewing was making a go of it, but he still missed the mark sometimes.  I'm sure Sam wanted the Summer transfer window to go looking for strikers, but Everton has that whole "what have you done for me lately" vibe that some sports teams get when expectations aren't met.
