The news here---for me anyway---is that Zuck's already buying the rights to name stuff after himself.

If I were king it would be an offence to name a public place after a human being who was still among the living.

Protesting nurses say some patients are reportedly fearful that their own privacy may be in jeopardy since the 147-year-old hospital is named after Mark Zuckerberg

It doesn't exactly flow off the tongue. That should be the first criteria to accepting a bid - er, donation - for naming rights.

Does it have a shorthand name yet, like Zuck-Gen?

A stipulation of accepting Zuckerberg's hefty donation was that the hospital be renamed

Is he trying to be the next trump by plastering his name all over everything? Demanding something in return for your donation isn't very philanthropic.

Yes. We changed our government regulated secure patient database to a proprietary Facebook OS. In order to get care here, you'll now need to share your wedding photos with at least 10 new friends.

That's what we did, you F'ing moron.

At least it wasn't named the Zucker hospital, so this patient won't have to get treated at a place with such a name.

Zucker hospital?  What is it?

It's a big building with lots of patients, but that's not important right now.

She donated millions to same Hospital for the ICU ward that repaired her after a skiing accident.
It has been renamed Picabo ICU . . .

Just because they changed the name doesn't mean people will use the new name.

Anyway, if it really bugs everyone that much, just give him the $75 million back and go back to the old name.

The idiot patients seem to think he bought their HIPPA rights, not the naming rights.

As much as I find Zuckerberger to be one of the lowest life forms on the planet, he did donate $75M which while not a lot for him, is still a lot of money.

Ideally, they would have named a wing of the hospital after him voluntarily for the donation. Forcing them to rename the entire hospital? The man is even more evil than I thought, and I didn't think that was possible.

Good lord, give me a break.  Dude donated 75 million, he gets to put his damn name on it.  Same thing that's happened at hospitals and university buildings all over the place forever.  Only difference is that he's a famous guy that not everyone loves.  Doesn't change what goes on in the hospital, morans.  Don't like it?  Give them 76 mill and I'll bet they'd be open to changing it.

How the nurses feel about it about it matters almost as little as what you doofuses think.

I really dislike Zuckerberg, and I'm willing to bet money, his wife is also just as much of a douchbag as well. And this just confirms what utter shiatheads they are.  Also they went to Stanford, and I never met anyone pleasant from that school.

However, I'm wondering if it is just my bias that really finds this naming of a hospital so unbelievably annoying.  Do other rich folks have hospitals named after them?  Other than a ward or section of a hospital...

Hospitals really seem like crossing the line, whereas, I could generally care less about a sports stadium being named after some rich bastards as professional sports is all about money anyways.  Can't that POS go buy a sports stadium?

I think there's a sliding scale of "tacky," depending on how much of a connection there is between the person and the institution.

The engineering building where I went to undergrad is named after a living person.  But he was also the founding dean of the school's College of Engineering, and was the university president for 20 years.  The school named the building after him when he retired after 33 years of service to the school.  Not tacky at all, IMO.

Joe Jamail went to the University of Texas for undergrad and law school, and went on to make a metric butt-ton of money.  He gave a bunch of money to the school, and they named a bunch of stuff after him.  Moderately tacky perhaps, but at least he had a strong connection to the university.

But getting your name on a building solely because you're the guy who stroked the huge check?  Tacky as hell.

You may not want to make that law all too ironclad, since that would prevent things like The John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Ward, which is a real thing that exists.

He donates through a Foundation.  Typical rich person thing to do.  And I agree it's something to wash away past "sins".

However, here is the relevant question/issue: has he wrote a check to a hospital with the caveat that the hospital be named, "Bill Gates General"?   I mean that as a serious question.

Yes. When people pay to build libraries or new wings on schools or donate large amounts of money or endow colleges or hospitals, those will typically be something named after them.
If Zuckerberg built a new hospital or added a wing that did something they didn't do before and it bared his name, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Carnegie Mellon was named after the person that founded it. Lots of colleges are named after their founders so, bad example

In this case, by making it a requirement for the money to be donated, he's more buying the naming rights than making a donation. Which is kind of odd anyway. The Zuckerberg name isn't really a brand that I'm aware of.
