Jesus, I'm sorry.

While it's probably best to cooperate with asshat cops, i wouldn't have given up my ID. States differ, but a cop can only demand mine if they have reason to believe I have, or are am about to commit a crime. Show me your papers pisses me off. Oh, and so does blatant racism.

Maybe the police aren't used to seeing black people doing menial work, since that's historically been done by white people.

Kinda surprised they weren't charged for stealing the roadside trash, since it's technically state property.

No, see, some of that debris they're picking up is undoubtedly beverage containers that have a deposit redeemable. Therefore offjcer Goober could charge them with petty theft or some such if he really wanted to go full retard.

In fairness, the policeman was doing his job exactly as he's supposed to do it and from the information in TFA was completely professional.  Honestly TFA describes a lot of my interactions with the cops, and I'm white as a klansman's sheets.

The asshat violating basic ethics and society norms (and technically the law, even, since filing a false report with the cops is a minor crime) is the idiot who called the cops.  Once the call has been made, 'not responding' isn't really an option for the police even if it's farking obvious the moment they lay eyes on the situation that it's not worth their time.

Right. And how much sense does calling the police on, and running the IDs of, college students who are doing voluntary community service make, exactly?

The article doesn't say what the caller reported, but it sounds like a fight was reported. So it makes sense that a cop would be sent to check it out. But as soon as he pulled up, he should have realized what they were doing and that they weren't a threat.

Is there some message board where a bunch a racists congregate and they all decided it would be fun to call the police every time they see a black person out in public?

"Responding" does not require demanding anyone produce ID documents.  It doesn't even technically require a conversation.  Just a roll past and a look to see if any crimes are being committed, or any help is needed.

I feel the same way.  The entire interaction should have been.

Cop:  What are you doing here.

Students:  We are picking up trash.

Cop:  *Looks at trash bags*  Yep.  Have a nice day.  *returns to car and moves on to other things*

If I were the cop, I would have added a thank you for cleaning up after the slobs who throw stuff out of their cars.

2018-05-16 12:24:36 AM
Gonna go out on a limb here and assume that the problem isn't so much racism (while it very well might have been the cop's motivation, who the hell knows) but rather a system that incentivizes cops with promotions for making arrests.

If randomly finding and nabbing a wanted criminal is worth kudos to a cop, or coming up with some infraction that generates revenue, then they're gonna run every farking ID they can do anything possible to make every police interaction "profitable". From EVERY interaction I've ever had with police, it's pretty farking clear there's a scorecard, and they're ALL going for the high score.

Start incentivizing cops by rewarding things like deescalation, or positive comments from citizens on their professionalism, or ANY other metric besides number and severity of arrests, and this shiat starts to change.

Demanding and recording the ID documents of innocent people in a public space who have a perfectly reasonable explanation for being there is not "following procedure".  This is not East Berlin and it's not 1984.

This is how the conversation should have gone, had the cop done his job properly:

"Afternoon ladies.  I got a call about a disturbance.  Is everything alright here?"
"Yes, Everything's fine.  We're picking up highway garbage for a school sorority community project."
"Outstanding.  Please allow me to help you until my next call comes in."

Even if whatever you happen to be doing when they talk to you is perfectly innocent, you may have warrants out. That's why they never pass on a chance to check ID.

As far as calling the cops, racist assholes are gonna asshole.

Don't the accused have a right to face their accuser?

Sir: I will provide my ID when you present before me the person accusing us of "fighting". In the meantime, we will be right here continuing to better our community.

It's a pipe dream, but people willing to call out others need to be held accountable as well. At least inconvenience them. Don't let them be racist douchecanoes with no repercussion.

Boudyro: Even if whatever you happen to be doing when they talk to you is perfectly innocent, you may have warrants out. That's why they never pass on a chance to check ID.

That's nonsense.  I've had numerous interactions with police and have never once had a cop ask for my ID unless he was asking for my license during a traffic stop.  If they went around randomly IDing people in rich white neighborhoods or shopping districts, there would be an uproar of epic proportions.

The fact is, cops ID people who they deem "suspicious".  And in central PA, that includes anyone and everyone who is black.

The whitest cop interaction I've ever had was one afternoon after trap shooting on a friend's ranch we ambled down a berm with a large cache of rifles and pistols and started setting up targets.  I had a Mini-14 slung over my shoulder and a beer in one hand, others in the group were carrying different guns and there were a half dozen more laid out on a blanket on the ground when a uniformed cop came walking up out of nowhere.  He told us a new neighbor had called in reporting rapid gunfire.  He said it looked like everything was ok, just checking to make sure we didn't have alcohol (beers were behind backs at that point) and carry on.  I asked him if he wanted to stay and squeeze off a few rounds with us but he said he couldn't while on duty and just left.  Never asked anyone for ID or called for backup or displayed the slightest concern.  Seemed like he was just happy to be out getting some fresh air.
