We actually spent three consecutive evenings last week watching the first three original "Death Wish" films.

They really suck, but in a frequently hilarious way.

Not his best work, to be sure.  But they are iconic of the 1970's, in the same way the DIrty Harry films and Taxi are.

I freaking love all the Death Wish movies.  Death Wish III is the funniest.  The multi-cultural, break-dancing, Rastafarian, drug-taking, punk rock, quasi-cult gang is the perfect 80s villain.  It's like they took several things that scared middle-America and crammed them together into a Voltron that terrorizes your grandma.

Also, is that a plunger?  Is one of the guys from "The Warriors" back there?

And the best part:  he kills the head boss with a rocket launcher from 5 feet away.

The completely burned-out early-80s South Bronx is the real star of the movie.  Death Wish III is farking perfect.

My rewatch after decades was made terrifying by the realization that it was none other than Jeff Goldblum who uttered the famous line " Mother is getting the sh*t kicked out of her."

I remember seeing Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects(or something like that) late night on cable.  It was just weird and gross.

Bronson plays a vice cop investigating a kiddie porn ring, and his primary method of justice is sodomizing criminals.

I suspect both Goldblum and Laurence Fishburne began leaving this work off their resumes at some point.

I liked him in Telefon, and in Mr. Majestyk, and of course in The Dirty Dozen.  I haven't seen the first two films in decades, though, so that could just be nostalgia speaking.  I have the DVD of The Dirty Dozen, watch it about once a year or so.  Great ensemble cast.

If you get one wish and you wish to look like a movie star, I guess you should be a bit more specific.

Why was I not informed of this until now?

The Googles Do Nothing: How bout some cookies?

No dice!

While it is a construct/product of its era, the first Death Wish is actually a very solid film with a fantastic Herbie Hancock dissonant jazz score. All the supporting characters are great and it portrays Paul Kersey (Bronson) less as a blood thirsty revenger and more as someone whose grief and powerlessness leads him to a dark place. Hell, the first time he goes after a mugger, he uses a roll of quarters rolled up in a sock, for god's sake. It's gritty and unpleasant at times (the rape and murder of his daughter and wife is particularly disturbing when compared to what passes as shocking now), but that was, as I wrote, what urban films were like back then.

DEATH WISH 3 (1985): Death of the Giggler

The scene where everyone cheers seeing The Giggler get killed is hilarious. To quote Best of the Worst's riffing of the movie, "Yay, murder! We love it!"
