Magic Johnson in previously unseen PSA's from 1989's "Michigan Premium Program"
These public service announcements have never been seen publicly before, as the funding for this program was eliminated from the Michigan Department of Agriculture's budget prior to its the launch of the campaign. In this clip is a 60 second version of the public service announcement (or PSA), and two different 30 second versions. The clips were discovered recently by Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development staff as they reviewed old VHS videos to send to the state archives. Johnson grew up in Lansing, Michigan and played college basketball for Michigan State University before joining the Los Angeles Lakers for his professional career. Here's more from a February 1989 news article in the Argus Press about the Michigan Premium Program: "The state's new Michigan Premium Program is designed to identify superior Michigan food and agriculture products meeting newly developed high quality standards. 'Not all Michigan food and agricultural products will carry the Michigan Premium Seal,' added Dr. Paul E. Kindinger, Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture. 'When a consumer sees the seal, they're assured that product is the very best Michigan has to offer.' The Michigan Premium Seal will be introduced through a public service campaign featuring former Michigan State University star Earvin "Magic" Johnson. In the announcement, Johnson describes premium-quality attributes from his perspective as an outstanding athlete. According to Kindinger, the announcement's goal is to reinforce the quality message of the Michigan Premium Program."
