Why use Firefox instead of other web browsers? Plenty of reasons... It has lots of great features such as built-in popup blocking, tabbed browsing, enhanced privacy and security, and more -- all wrapped up with a simple-to-use interface. And now with the extensions below, you can make your Fark experience even better!

Firefox is getting great reviews from the mainstream media, and many of your fellow Farkers have already become converts. It's quick and easy to switch (or just test drive). Your existing bookmarks will be imported, and you can still use your old browser. If you decide you don't like Firefox, just uninstall it and go back to what you were using before.

Installing and Updating Extensions

There are two ways to install extensions. The easiest way is to click "Install Now" from an addons.mozilla.org page. Alternatively, you can download the extension to your local hard drive, and install it from there (by dragging it to the Firefox window, or by using the browser's File -> Open File menu). As a proactive security measure, Firefox will not allow installing extensions directly from other websites.

Important note on Fark Extensions

These extensions are written by third parties, not by Fark. Fark does not provide support for these -- contact the authors for updated versions and fixes, instead of using Farkback. Changes and new features we add to Fark are not tested against these plugins -- so they might break unexpectedly at times.

Some of the functionality these extensions provide has recently been integrated into Fark and/or TotalFark -- for example, buttons for adding HTML/formatting to posts, quoting other users' posts, and highlighting posts from your favorite users.

Fark Extensions

Farkit
Description: Allows easy quoting of Fark.com comments
Author: Fnord Install Install from getfarky.com

Note: Version 2.4g is the minimum version that will work with our current site design.
2.4g is required to handle our March 2009 URL changes.

Note: Fark's got some of this functionality built in now.

Use the Farkit extension in any of the Fark comment threads... First, select some text from a comment you want to reply to (ie, quote), and right-click anywhere on the page. [One-button Mac users: hold down Control key and click]. You should see a new "Farkit" item added to the normal context menu that appears. Click this menu item, and the text you selected will be quoted, with attribution and HTML formatting, in the comment box at the bottom of the page. Type your reply and post as you normally would.

Example 2

Example 3

Farkit will remember who you last quoted, until the page is reloaded. If you quote the same person again, the attribution (bold username) will not be added again. Similarly, you can quote multiple people in the same reply and each will be attributed correctly.

Instead of clicking, you can use a keyboard shortcut to quote. Control-V quotes normally, while Control-Shift-V quotes without scrolling the page.

Note that this menu item will not appear on other web pages, nor will it appear when no text is selected. Also, this extension makes certain assumptions about the format of the Fark HTML code. If the page layout changes you will need to update to the newest extension.

Farkode
Description: Right-click menu with HTML codes for users of Fark.com
Author: And-1 Install Install from addons.mozilla.org

(Note: Some, but not all, of this functionality is now built into Fark -- see our FAQ on HTML assistant buttons)

Farkode provides a right-click menu in Firefox to simplify adding HTML (image tags, hyperlinks, font fomatting, etc.) to comments on the Fark.com and TotalFark.com websites. It is based on the excellent BBCode extension, but is trimmed down and tailored for Fark users. It works in Fark comments, Fark threads, Fark profiles, and optionally on any other website. With Farkode you can easily:

  • Change font formats in your comments - like bold, italic, small, colour, big, strikeout, size +1, size +2, superscript, and subscript.
  • Insert images into threads - useful for the urban Photoshopper, and for posting those "Welcome N00B", "Pwn3d!!" Boobie, and Weener images.
  • Insert web links into threads - for the prolific linkers, with the added bonus of automatic popping links.
  • Open any plain text URL - to make up for those who still refuse to linkify their URLs.
  • Open Fark threads from a thread number in someone else's comment (especially for our friendly neighbourhood mods and admins).
  • Open Fark Photoshop Monitor, Honour Roll, or Profile entries from just a user name.
  • Perform a Google or Google Image search for any selected text.
