What's new
Here is just a small sample of what's new at Fark lately. There are a lot of other smaller changes not detailed here...
2009
- URL cleanup, getting rid of the ugly forums.fark.com and cgi.fark.com URLs we used to have.
- Main page of Fark can now have per-user customizations (finally)
- HQ/HD support for Youtube video links
- Headline Of The Week
- Top 25 / Top 100 lists now have month/year breakdowns
- Fark Facebook page
- Relaunch of Fark Travel site
- Preview mode for profile bio edits
- Fix several problems with paginated comments
- Headline Search rewritten and significantly improved
- PDA version of TotalFark
2008
- Paginated comments
- Note: Pagination will be forced on for really large threads, to improve load times
- User Ignore Lists and Favorite Link Lists now available to all users; these were previously TotalFark-only features
- NewsFlash subscriptions are now free; use the MyFark profile Edit button to enable/disable
- NewsFlash emails can now be sent to a separate email address than your normal one -- for example, SMS gateways
- More profile fields -- IM, social network/blog sites, etc
- Voting tab moved to sidebar, replaced with summary page of all tabs
- Images-to-links button for comments
- Politics links now have a political slant meter; details here
- Headline t-shirts
- ultrafark.com email addresses for some Totalfark subscribers (details here)
- Fixed several long-standing hardware issues, improving site reliability/performance
November/December 2007
- Profile changes:
- Link history in user profiles has a new look, closer to the main page of Fark's look.
- Link history and post history now have # of new comments everywhere.
- Threads also have # of new comments at the top; this was previously a TotalFark-only feature.
- The main page still doesn't have # of new comments because it's static content and not customizable per-user (for performance reasons).
- Several sections in user profiles got rearranged vertically. There is a set of "jump to section" links at the top that might help navigate.
- TotalFarkers can now set personal info fields to "show to Totalfarkers only" instead of just "public" vs "hidden".
- TotalFarkers now get additional personal info fields; more coming soon.
- Comment posting / link submission preview checkboxes now disable preview instead of enable it. The default setting is still in the "preferences" section of your user profile and still has the same meaning it always did, so this change should only be noticable if you've been manually toggling the checkbox instead of changing your global preference -- if the box is left alone, the behavior is the same as it always was.
- Notes made in your Favorite Users list now show up at the top of each comment made by those users.
- Fark admin blogs.
- Several new anti-spambot features behind the scenes. One was the preview checkbox inversion, and another of these involving renaming some form variables to new names less commonly tried by spambots. This renaming breaks old versions of Farkit and Farky so check here for version 2.3f of FarkIt and 1.1.8 of Farky. The older FarkIt 2.2 will cause problems with posting comments.
- A problem with accessing Fark from some locations (behind VPN's or dialup connections with small MTU values) during late October / early November was traced to a device driver bug, which was reported to the vendor and patched.
- Fixed problem with some RSS clients not getting the dates of links right.
- Fixed problem with some links not appearing on the Music page that should have.
- Numerous performance-related changes, both in software and hardware, after a few weeks of bad performance in late November/early December.
August/September/October 2007
- Cosmetic cleanup of the PDA version of Fark.
- More consistent colors of status/error messages.
- The "refresh after submitting link" user profile preference now actually works. :)
- FarkIt buttons for use on other sites
- Several major OS upgrades and software updates behind the scenes
June/July 2007
- New HTML assistant buttons -- see Basic Farking HTML for an overview.
- New preference checkbox in profiles for reading comments: when checked, it'll jump automatically to the first new post. A red horizontal line marks the boundary between the old and new posts.
- Business tab.
- Geek and Showbiz tab URL's changed for consistency.
- Various hardware upgrades.
- Improve error handling for the rare cases where we do have hardware problems.
Known issues:
- Business tab missing from Music page. (This is up to Blender to fix.)
April 2007
- New site redesign launched April 25 at 5 pm. In addition to that:
- Headline Search now available to all users
- myFark Favorite Users feature now available to all registered users
Known issues:
- Some people are seeing CPU spikes viewing the page. Others aren't. Some Firefox extensions make the problem worse, so turn those off first to see if that helps.
- If you use the Farkit or Farky extensions you must have the latest versions, so check here to see what the latest ones are.
- Numerous layout issues in very old versions of Safari, Opera, and on Playstation 3's. Mobile phone users should use Fark On PDA.
- Some tabs don't highlight when clicked, like myFark, FAQ, and Contests.
March 2007
- New Headline Search feature available for TotalFarkers
February 2007
January 2007
- myFark Favorite Users feature (TotalFark only) -- highlight posts from selected users
- myFark Favorite Links feature (TotalFark only) -- bookmark specific threads and track how many new posts since your last visit, so you don't have to scroll through them all every time
- Summary pages for all greenlit links for ALL topic tabs at once (i.e. Sports, Showbiz, Politics, Tech, Main all in one page) for both Fark and TotalFark
- Split user profiles up into sections for easier viewing/editing
- Preview headlines on link submission, just like comments
- Fix anonymous Totalfark sponsorships
