Fark Services
What is FarkIt?
The FarkIt button is an easy way to get news articles on your site linked to Fark. By including either our easy-to-install script (which includes a button image), or manually using your own image, you can link directly into Fark's submission service. More Info on FarkIt
What is the Fark Newsflash service?
Want to get newsflashes the moment we post them? Subscribe to Fark's Newsflash service and you will receive an email containing a link to the Newsflash article. Fark monitors all of the news websites simultaneously so you don't have to. Be the first in your office to tell everyone else what the hell is going on when a story breaks.
If your phone or pager allows SMS messages to be sent via email, we can send the notices to your phone or pager, too, if you enter your SMS email address.
To activate this, go to your MyFark profile, and go into the edit mode by entering your password at the very top of your profile. At the bottom, you'll see a Subscription section, where you can enable the News Flash emails.
When you enable a subscription, it only stays active for one year -- you have to go back and re-enable it each year. The dates are displayed on the profile edit screen. (This is so that in the rare case where your email address changes and the old one gets assigned to someone else, we won't get as many complaints wrongly accusing us of spamming.) We will probably add a way to select subscription duration, and a notification of a pending expiration, in the near future.
Be sure that your spam filters allow email notifications from Fark.
What is Fark on PDA?
Fark has a slimmed down version of Fark designed for mobile devices -- Palm, Pocket PC, cell phones with HTML (not WAP) browsers, etc. You can find it right here.
You can also use AvantGo if you have it on your Palm or Pocket PC, but this is not required. If you do want to use AvantGo, here's how to use it to download Fark in 3 easy steps...
Step 1 Install AvantGo on your Palm. If you already have AvantGo installed, go to step 2.
- Avantgo is a service that downloads web content to you Palm during a Hotsync operation to your PC or Mac. The service is free. Software is installed that works in conjuction with your Palm Desktop software. Go to AvantGo to sign up.
- Select "Sign Up" for individuals and follow the installation instructions. One you have signed up, gotten your username and password and installed the software, go to step 2.
Step 2 Click here to import the FARK.com info that AvantGo needs for your account. Note: this URL changed in May 2007.
- Avantgo may ask for your username and password. Once supplied, AvantGo will show you a "Channel Properties Review" (see image below) of Fark.com.
- If memory on your Palm is at a premium, there are two settings you can change to help reduce memory usage. First is the "Maximum Channel Size" setting. It is currently set to 1000K. That number represents the maximum amount of data AvantGo will download into your palm from Fark.com. The second thing you can do to save memory is to turn off the "include images" setting.
- "Link Depth" must be set to at least 1 and "Follow Off-site Links" must be turned on.
- Once you have the settings to your liking, click on the "Save Channel" button at the bottom of the "Channel Properties Review" form. Go to Step 3.
