Fark Party
Host: Alpha Sierra Foxtrot
Description: The 50th Annual Dragon*Con Fark Party - Saturday, August 31, 1pm at Big Kahuna, Atlanta, GA
Date/Time: August 31, 2013 - 01:00 PM (local time)
Party Info: Come one, come all, to the annual Dragon*Con Fark Party, this year conveniently located NOT in a host hotel so that Non-Con-Goers can have a chance to attend.

Finding the Farkers: Look for the blonde nerd with the very embarrassed looking fiancée. Or, I'll have my above-average-intelligence phone complete with e-mail with me, so I'm sure you can figure something out.

Parking: Might be tight, but the garage in the Suntrust Plaza building validates parking, so I'd suggest parking there. If you can't find parking there, NYAH NYAH NYAH I CAN'T HEAR YOU.

The Parade: I know it's right after the parade, but seriously, man up, nancy. I'm marching in the parade and making this happen; the least you can do is show up.

Other Info: I apologize in advance for not having a Leeloo-in-bandages costume, but I might be wearing Dr Horrible? That's sexy, right? RIGHT?!

Let me know if you have any questions! I have e-mail and if you know who I am on Facebook, you can message me there, too.

Location: Big Kahuna
303 Peachtree Center Avenue Suite PCA-01
Atlanta, GA 30303

I've been wondering, what is the difference between the cons? Like comic, dragon and wonder. What sets them apart?

Usually just the city where they're located.

Though I believe Wizard World is a company that goes around having conventions in different cities.

Really that's it???? I thought they had different themes or topics they discussed. I keep hearing that people are mad at the comic one for not being about comics anymore and dragon was better but then there is no way they're only talking about dragons. I don't know, I'm confused.

50th?
Nerds have been gathering for 50 years?
I thought their life span in the wild was between 30-40 years?

Pretty much...I mean, some of them have different focuses...like Otakon in Baltimore & Momocon in Atlanta are mostly anime stuff, but they have other stuff. Celebration is only Star Wars, though.

DragonCon runs the whole gambit of topics...it's almost like a bunch of conventions in one. I guess you could say it's a pop culture convention. There's a Brit Track for people who like Doctor Who and Sherlock. There's a Writers Track. There's a Skeptics Track. Pretty much anything you can think of.

There's no hard definition. But the big three are the San Diego Comic-Con, New York Comic-Con and Dragon*Con.

The biggest difference is: Comic-Cons are trade shows, run by the industry. They're huge, well-funded, organized and draw a lot of celebrity presence. Dragon*Con is a nerd party where the inmates run the asylum. It's less of a "come here and buy stuff" convention and more of a "wear a costume and get drunk" convention. Total attendence can't really be compared as the cons count people differently, but they're all drawing 50,000+ over the weekend.

Haven't been to DC in a couple years. Labor Day weekend is a PITA travel time...but maybe.

Parking Tip: Park at a MARTA station and take MARTA in to Peachtree Center Station. Parking and traffic are insane that weekend.

We opted for a location off the Dragon*Con grounds this year, as several Farkers were blocked from entry last year due to not having a Dragon*Con badge. If you do want to go to Dragon*Con itself, the con is a block away.

Oh well I didn't even know there were that many

Ahhhh so that explains the hate some people have for the traditional Comic Con. Ok now I get it. I was watching a video on the cosplay stuff (cause like ya know boobs and stuff) and I realized I didn't even know what 90% of the costumes were but it seemed like anything goes and you could do whatever you wanted. I really do not have the imagination to do that, even for Halloween :/

2013-07-15 10:52:43 AM
For me Dragoncon is a 4 day costume party with some celebrity panels and concerts thrown in. I think comic con has 3x the people there. Comic con seems to have a bigger emphasis on sneak peaks for new movies whereas dragoncon focuses on stuff that already came out. I havent done comic con yet though. I am not sure about the point of having a fark party at dragoncon- the whole con is geeks and there is too much going on to schedule anything!

Tat'dGreaser: Oh well I didn't even know there were that many

Honestly by any definition of a con there's hundreds across the continent each year. Most of them are dinky one-day affairs that go on for a few hours and end on schedule. It's just the big ones that people tend to hear about.

And yeah, +1 for costume boobs. The costuming community has gotten huge and has become an art form in and of itself. The creativity and ingenuity that goes into some of these things can be mind-boggling.

2013-07-15 10:56:29 AM
I went last year after missing out for the past 10 years+ and found that this is a Movie+Anime+TV Series festival. Do not go there and expect gaming to be front and center like it once used to be. This is a straight up ComicCon of the South and although geek stuff is present it is by no means out in the open like it once was. I remember when Video Games, Role Playing games, gaming auctions were all over the place. I went scouring for RPG gear and found a handful of booths (1 run by Steve Jackson Games) buried in a hall room off to the side. Beyond that it was all Big Bang Theory, Hercules, BSG, and other tropes of the industry.

The Indie movie reviews were fun, the amateur wrestling a blast, and the robotics stuff (homemade R2 units) were enjoyable to see but DC is not for me anymore. Too many people, too damn hot, and nothing I want to see or do there. If it wasn't for my local friends who were LEO and knew the backroads in and out of places (it's amazing how flashing a badge even in an outfit opens doors for you)I would have had an even worse time.

Most of the costumes are direct recreations of actual characters. The creativity comes into play in actually replicating the outfit. And most of the good ideas there come from industry people that've had generations of experience working with them. Step 1 is usually finding a costume you've got an interest in and attempting to build it.

It did change. The highschool jock/nerd war continued on, as word has it some roving crowds of football fans snuck into the con in 2010 and sexually assaulted some of the convention girls. Since then they locked it down: you show a hotel card or a convention badge to get in. No exceptions.

Oh I mean creative as in number 1, picking a good idea. I can't even do that! I've had some great ideas for kick ass Halloween costumes but then never follow through

it's also unconfirmed. No arrests were made and the girls claiming to be victims refused to out themselves. But the convention certainly took it seriously enough to overhaul security. So take that for what it's worth.

The drunk football fans are mostly there because the Chick-fil-a kickoff classic games are there that weekend. You have fans from four different big football schools (many who could never actually get into these schools) mixed in with the DragonCon people. It makes a bit of a mess. By checking badges, only football fans staying at the convention hotels can get in and most don't because the rooms are already booked by con attendees.

My question is has DragonCon fixed the badge pick up problem? I went a few years ago and waited two hours to pick up a badge I paid for months in advance. I was told this was a one time problem, so I bought a badge again the next year and ended up standing in line for four hours to pick it up. That was it for me. If they can't mail the thing to me, I'm going to walk over to the parade (I live a few blocks away) but not bother with going to the con itself.

/Not falling for "but really, it's fixed this year" line again

I used to pay at the door since it was way faster. 2 years ago they implemented a new system which worked great until the machines went down. Last year I gave prereg a shot and there was no line- it took 10 mins tops on thurs afternoon.

She meant the other Bender. Alpha Sierra Foxtrot and I are 501st members. We were Kevin J Anderson's 'security' at a book signing a few months back when some dude in a Bender costume crashed the party wanting photos with Stormtroopers that he could put on Reddit.

He spent 40 minutes telling us about all the costume contest money he's won with his Bender. It got to the point where the people we were there for - the book crowd - was suffering from us tolerating him so we did a 180 and left his ass outside to struggle with climbing out of Bender by himself. He was an ass. Kevin J Anderson is rad.

"Parking: Might be tight, but the garage in the Suntrust Plaza building validates parking, so I'd suggest parking there. If you can't find parking there, NYAH NYAH NYAH I CAN'T HEAR YOU. "

One thing I wanted to point out about parking:

Last year I drove down Peachtree Center Ave, and it was fairly clear of traffic around 7:00 PM. The trick is to stay off Courtland Ave, which leads into the Hilton. However, things can change from year to year. So, if you know your way around downtown, stick to Peachtree Center Ave, as best you can. Once you get to the Suntrust Garden Plaza (the last modern building on the right) you can make an immediate right into the parking garage with no problem. I don't think the garage will be anywhere near full. They have 8 or 9 levels below ground, you just have to be willing to drive down. Some people be lazy. As mentioned, parking is validated so don't be afraid to park. However, if you are getting sloshed...take the MARTA. If you are taking the MARTA, bring a friend for that comfort feeling. MARTA is safe, but never hurts to have a buddy in those dark underground places.

ooyah... NTTAWWT. From yesterday's staff mtg sounds like there's some fan-farking-tastic stuff in this year's lineup!

y0sh1: Lurk sober post drunk: i'll be there. tried to go the last minute fark party last year but it seemed to fall apart.

I tried to get in as well, but got Con*Blocked. (no badge)

i had a badge, but from following the thread it was basically
"i'm here, over by the window. anyone else here?"
"oh, um, i might swing by, maybe."
"k, i'm here, where's everyone else?" etc etc.
and the supermassive data shield dome thing they apparently put over all the host hotels made it incredibly frustrating to use a smartphone.

Alpha Sierra Foxtrot: Churchill92: I went last year after missing out for the past 10 years+ and found that this is a Movie+Anime+TV Series festival.

It must be really taxing to remain so depressed all the time, Marvin.

He's kinda right though.
First year I went, mid-90's, best friend an I played so much Warhammer and just slept under the tablecloths (to young to get a hotel room), video gaming was just breaking in the following year. Now TT gaming is sequestered away to a basement, video gaming is expensive, and ffs do we really need 248,972,349,872,894,729,834,702 tshirt vendors in the dealer rooms? The leadership hasn't really gotten any better either, which is why I quit volunteering as staff.
Still go every year though, it's like a relaxing vacation for me, and getting to see friends from all over the country is worth nearly anything.. Might have to miss it this time around, which makes me sad. Despite my complaints I still love it.

Yeah, I didn't object so much to his complaints so much as his tone.

Well, except the thing about Hercules and BSG...maybe I'm not paying attention, but I didn't really see those two taking over.

Kyro: atlfarkette: I think it changed. I went three/four years ago and we could wander the hotels freely without a badge. That's not the case anymore right?

It did change. The highschool jock/nerd war continued on, as word has it some roving crowds of football fans snuck into the con in 2010 and sexually assaulted some of the convention girls. Since then they locked it down: you show a hotel card or a convention badge to get in. No exceptions.

That was the same year as the fire, the hotel staff person getting hospitalized from overexhaustion, and a massive surge in thefts (my wife was targeted three times, twice successfully, and found out from security that it was much worse than previous years).

I am way over age, but I have never been to DragonCon. My bros insist that I can't be alone during the con, because it's dangerous or some shiat. I have been to Cons before, but yeah not like DragonCon. It probably has something to do with so many people you will get lost or something. They also demanded for me to bring a chick friend, so I can buddy up with her to go to the bathroom. I said why can't I just bring a guy friend or what not, they said we can't in the bathroom with you. I wish I wasn't make this shiat up, and my friends are odd.

Your bros are helicoptering something fierce. Have they even been to Dragon*Con before? I've been going to it for years. It's enormously safe. Over the top safe. There's security everywhere, nobody enters the grounds without a badge and the people going there are generally white collar 30-somethings. Were I you I would be deeply insulted at the complete lack of confidence they have in you being left alone. Are they going to be childproofing your hotel room too?

Seriously the only danger you're in is seeing a few underdressed fat guys or spending too much money in the vendor rooms.

This is beyond paranoid for the average congoer during the daytime. Yes, you might get separated in a crowd. You agree on where you're going, and if you get separated on the way, you meet back up when you get there.

For a woman congoer late at night, it's only slightly paranoid. Fairly reasonable, actually; I have women friends who've been going to D*C for 20 years and won't go anywhere there along after dark. But the bathroom thing? That's definitely odd.

This, boys and girls, is what hard core looks like. (Mine was early 90s, and my parents knew I was there so we could get a hotel room all legal like.)

I think this needs some additional qualification. Because I feel you're implying that DragonCon is a dangerous place for women. And to date I can find no records of any police reports filed for attacks or assault. Now granted I'm sure every year sees its share of crowd-born inappropriate actions that are in no way okay, but you'd run that same risk at a concert, bar or dance club. And having your girlfriend with you isn't going to stop some drunken asshole from trying to cop a feel.

Not walking around downtown Atlanta's strees alone at 3am? That's smart.

Being alone among 2,000 other people inside the con at midnight? Don't be silly.

Yeah they have been going for like the past 5 years I think. It is annoying as hell when they keep telling me buddy system. The bathroom thing is odd, because I was like can't you wait outside after I go? They were like no to many people by the bathrooms. Their logic makes no sense, and they get shiat faced drunk there too. Which is what you are suppose to do, but they have gotten kicked out of Rush concert for being to drunk. Also one of them ended up in detox after getting kicked out. So I probably could handle myself better than they could.

Yeah I can see that, but all the late night stuff we kind of planned on doing together, so I don't think it be an issue. They kind of forget that I am the friend that has gotten them out of being arrested for being drunk dumbasses.

The sad thing is, that I am bringing a friend who parties out way to early. I took her to Chicago Comic Con, and she was already in bed by 10. She spent most of her time outside the con walking to gas stations to get cigs, and hang all over her boyfriend. I have a feeling she will be by herself a lot in the hotel room, while the guys and I are having fun.

I told them that a lot, believe me. My friends are idiots, loveable idiots. We have the same shiat in common too, so we probably are going to end doing the same shiat anyways. We already plan on going to see Cruxshadows, and Voltaire. They also keep telling me DragonCon is brutal.

I'm assuming you're in the Hyatt or Marriott at midnight? Except for the bar off the main lobby, the Hilton (where my group's activities are based) is pretty quiet by then, and the non-congoers are on their way back in after the football game or the Nascar race.

One of the many great things about D*C is that the crowd usually won't let the drunken assholes take things far enough to require police involvement. And that's gotten easier with the recent crackdown on badge policy. But there are plenty of places "inside the con" that don't have a crowd at that hour.

demonfaerie's additional information makes it clear that her friends are pretty thoroughly in the wrong, though, unless they're secretly clever enough to be insisting on the buddy system so that she keeps them out of trouble (which doesn't look likely).

As always, my attendance is secondary to Tech's football schedule.

For those on the fence : It's worth a badge just for the night time parties. If you can't have fun in one of the ballrooms at Dragon*con you are not a enjoyable person to be around so stay home.

I think I am going to be the only person at Dragon*Con who is taking Saturday afternoon off to go to a college football game. Sure, it's Georgia Tech, so basically the same crowd, but still.

::Looks at post above:: OK, I am going to be one of only TWO people...

I have a couple of questions for the Fark DragonCon veterans. I will be attending for the first time in about 15 years with my teenage kids and want to let them see what a con is like. We can go only for Saturday (son has a ball game Friday night he has to march in). I'm preordering badges online to pick up there.

First, when picking up the badges it says to have photo ID, so I'm guessing that's just needed for me only since I bought them. The online ordering has a comments box where I think you can put in the name you want on your badges. Is there a format that should be followed to ensure the names get on there right (I'd hate to walk around with "Badge #1" on all day because they didn't realize it was just to indicate that's what I wanted on the first one. I'd put "Bizarro #1" on it if I that was the case)?

Any hints about getting thru the badge pickup line faster? I know it'll be crazy, and if they start processing badges at 8 AM I don't know what time to try and get there.

Is there reasonable parking around the con in the lots nearby or should we find a MARTA station as has been suggested?

Thanks!

Badge pickup is infinitely better than it used to be. You'll get a barcoded postcard in the mail a few days after you sign up. DO NOT LOSE THAT POSTCARD.

I haven't ever done Saturday pickup, but if the line works the way it has on Fridays since they implemented the barcode system, there will be a lot of people queued up before the line opens. They'll take about an hour to drain, and then it's about ten minutes to get through at any other time. If I only had one day, I'd probably brave the early morning line, but that's just me.

If you're planning to leave while MARTA is running (and you presumably are), you absolutely want to go with a MARTA station rather than deal with trying to find walkable parking.

I've heard this protip before. Is it still valid in the barcode era? And for Saturday-only folks like mbillips?

I think I've heard rumors of Saturday badges selling out a couple of times, so I don't know that I'd risk it, even so. But clearly I'm the risk-adverse side of all the current conversations here.

Y'know how I know you haven't pre-purchased in at least three years?

Seriously, that problem was long since fixed. I've pre-purchased every year for a long time. They transitioned to a much more efficient barcode system in 2011.

Protip on badging: Don't pre-purchase. Do the day-of walkup, and bring cash. No line at all. Both pre-purchase and ...

I haven't tried Saturday-only. If you're doing the full weekend, Thursday morning walkup is the way to go, but Saturday might sell out if you don't get there early.

Kyro: mbillips: Protip on badging: Don't pre-purchase. Do the day-of walkup, and bring cash. No line at all. Both pre-purchase and credit-card lines are really long.

Y'know how I know you haven't pre-purchased in at least three years?

Seriously, that problem was long since fixed. I've pre-purchased every year for a long time. They transitioned to a much more efficient barcode system in 2011.

2009: Three hour wait.
2010: Four hour wait.
2011: Five minute wait.
2012: No wait.

Yay! I didn't know that. The wife went last year when I was out of town, and that's when she figured out how much faster the cash line was.

For the badge name, it will have your real name on it AND whatever additional name you request. That's where we put our 501st ID numbers, forum usernames, club officer titles, or witty nicknames. You could put your Fark username there, for example. They compare ID to the name attached to your order to make sure you are picking up what you ordered. You should be fine picking up your badge and your child's at the same time.

So what is the booze policy around there? I heard you have to sneek in the booze, because of some law about charging to open booze or something. My friends are bringing cases of canned beer, but some of the beer I want to bring is only in glass bottles. New Glarus doesn't do canned beer.

So far as I can tell, the policy is:
Bring your booze in during the day, ideally with luggage, and at least make enough of an effort to conceal it so that the doormen and bellhops can have plausible deniability.

/not a drinker, but I usually arrive with a decent stockpile even so

Jules: Hamburgers! The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast. What kind of hamburgers?
Brett: Ch-cheeseburgers.
Jules: No, no no, where'd you get 'em? McDonalds? Wendy's? Jack in the Box? Where?
Brett: Big Kahuna Burger.
Jules: Big Kahuna Burger. That's that Hawaiian burger joint. I hear they got some tasty burgers. I ain't never had one myself. How are they?
Brett: They're good.
Jules: Mind if I try one of yours? This is yours here, right?
[Picks up burger and takes a bite]
Jules: Mmm-mmmm. That is a tasty burger. Vincent, ever have a Big Kahuna Burger?
[Vincent shakes his head]
Jules: Wanna bite? They're real tasty.
Vincent: Ain't hungry.
Jules: Well, if you like burgers give 'em a try sometime. I can't usually get 'em myself because my girlfriend's a vegitarian which pretty much makes me a vegitarian. But I do love the taste of a good burger. Mm-mm-mm. You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with cheese in France?
Brett: No.
Jules: Tell 'em, Vincent.
Vincent: A Royale with cheese.
Jules: A Royale with cheese! You know why they call it that?
Brett: Because of the metric system?
Jules: Check out the big brain on Brett! You're a smart motherfarker. That's right. The metric system. What's in this?
Brett: Sprite.
Jules: Sprite, good. You mind if I have some of your tasty beverage to wash this down?
Brett: Go right ahead.
Jules: Ah, hit the spot.

I'm going this year. Last time I went was 2010, when we almost got hit by a falling window (somebody knocked out their 4th story hotel window onto the street, a couple people and a taxi got farked up). Oh, and somebody threw a beer bottle into the lobby from waaaay up high in one of the hotels. Other than that though, it seemed fairly safe, and was a lot of fun. The costuming is always a lot of fun to watch, but most of the panels we went to ended up sucking pretty bad (Doctor Who, hacking panels, a Tim Burton thing) but we didn't line up in time for the popular ones.

2010 was "special". It's been a lot calmer since. The militant (but fairly unobtrusive, considering) badge checks seem to have been a reaction to that year's events, and seem to have helped rein in the bad crazy.

Last year, my wife and I were people watching when we notice a guy drop his badge. It was Richard Garriott (Lord British/Game Designer/Billionaire/Astronaut). Returned it to him and he snuck us into DragonCon. Talked for a few minutes about my secret nerd crush and former UO addiction before parting ways as he had an event to attend.

As civilians, we went to the bar to watch people and SEC football. Sat down at a table and saw a group of other civilians looking for a place to sit. They joined us and we cheered/drank at the games. After a while we talked about work. I'm a bank guy, they were the draw/write/color guys for Spiderman and Hulk who were killing time waiting for Stan Lee to take them out to dinner.

After the game ended, we walked around some more to people watch. Costumes ranged from 'cool' to 'wow thats slutty' to 'Oh-my-god-how-did-they-do-that' I'd never admit it to my wife but recognized a porn star who was walking around as a succubus. She had one nothing but paint, boots, thong and little wings. Another woman was walking around with an animatronic raptor head, back and tail. She was some sort of Raptor girl in a black cocktail dress with a man on a leash. Truly amazing.

It was such a good time that even though we aren't really into all the things that Dragoncon is about, we will be going back yearly.

Rand's lacy underwear: ChaosStar: First year I went, mid-90's, best friend an I played so much Warhammer and just slept under the tablecloths (to young to get a hotel room)

This, boys and girls, is what hard core looks like. (Mine was early 90s, and my parents knew I was there so we could get a hotel room all legal like.)

Oh man, looking back on it we could have gotten in so much trouble.
We did the whole "I'm staying at his house/You're staying at my house" thing with our parents and caught the shuttle to the Atlanta airport from about two hours down the interstate. Made little forts under the game table tablecloths with our tupperware army boxes to sleep in, sometimes scare the bajeezus out of people when we'd wake up by grabbing their ankles.
Eventually we got pretty rank and would have to beg other players to use their room showers.
Good times man, but couldn't get away with any of that now.

Kyro: Parking Tip: Park at a MARTA station and take MARTA in to Peachtree Center Station. Parking and traffic are insane that weekend.

No. The only time I EVER parked out at a MARTA station and rode into town was the one time I had my car completely stolen. Late at night, 'opportuniust' patrol those parking lots for folks trying to save a few dollars on downtown parking. That may work fine for a daytime excursion or after a day-trip to Six Flags. Having lived many years in downtown New Orleans, I had my vehicle broken into a few times... just to 'have a look'. But when they stole the entire car in Atlanta, that is how it happened. The Atlanta police told me break-ins occur regularly at the closest two or three stations to Downtown, but car thefts not so much. I'm glad it has worked for you, but my experience was different.

So nevermind the people that do this regularly(myself included). Nevermind that the police themselves told you that thefts are rare. Nevermind that you yourself said a daytime excursion(what time is the Fark party again?) would probably be fine. Your anecdote about a car theft at a MARTA parking lot means parking there is sure to make anyone lose their car. Got it.

Don't blame Marta. Your car can be stolen from any parking spot in the city at any time.

There will be no parking available near downtown all weekend. Unless you get there early and never move your ride, make other arrangements.

Churchill92: I went last year after missing out for the past 10 years+ and found that this is a Movie+Anime+TV Series festival.

Did you miss the entire basement hall of wall to wall gaming tables? Granted I did for almost two whole DragonCons in a row, and was too sick last year to lug my minis all the way to the Hilton basement to try to get a game in. Maybe this year... Bioware and Gearbox at least were there last year too, as well as a couple MMO developers.

SOE was there last year too, albeit with the B squad (led by the extremely nice RadarX, of Planetside 2 community fame) while the A team was at PAX I believe.
The gaming basement can be difficult to find if you don't know where to look, not sure if they've moved it this year or not, but I can sympathize with you about lugging minis around even if the Warhammer/40K gaming has slowed to a trickle since the 90's.

Is the party going to have a problem since Dragon blocked Kahuna from having their street festival?

I'd go if I could arrive in town in time but I highly doubt I'm going to be able to make it in time. I wasn't even planning on doing con this year but a favorite band got the nod to play so I am going for the latter part of Saturday and going to the concert Sunday night.

Text me when you're going to go play. I want to see what this is all about. I'll be one of your groupies.

I might just bring my X-wing minis this year. Way more portable than my entire 40k army, and a much faster game to play. We'll see though, I've got lots of room in my car. Will do though if I find someone to play a game with.

ChaosStar: HalEmmerich: Churchill92: I went last year after missing out for the past 10 years+ and found that this is a Movie+Anime+TV Series festival.

Yeah, I didn't see any 40k going on anyway. A lot of Warmachine/Hordes, and even a couple Battletech games, but no 40k. Most of the room was various boardgames and some pen and paper RPGs. If there had been a prospect of finding a game last year I probably would have lugged them over anyway, but I think I was patient 0 for con crud last year so I was pretty under the weather the whole weekend.

I always see a few 40K games, mostly what looks like >1000 point games. To small for my tastes, if I'm gonna lug 5K points worth of IG around I wanna use all my tanks!
I think that's why Warmachine is so popular, can carry an entire warband in a single case.

Now that San Diego Comic Con has been polluted into a Holly-Hype crapfest, I'd like to go to an event still meant for fans like Dragon*Con (especially now that they've finally been able to stop paying off that pedophile Ed Kramer), but Deep South in late August? Why don't I just put on this heavy costume and roll around in a lobster steamer for a while instead and save on air fare?

Southerners invented air conditioning a long time ago. As long as you never go outside, you'll be fine.

As opposed to San Diego, which is way up north? Oh wait :)

I don't think they will have moved the gaming basement, unless it's moved up to/expanded into the Hilton 2nd Floor ballroom that used to be Walk of Fame. LARPing is still in the spot that it's been in for the past few years (outside that ballroom), and all of gaming tends to travel more-or-less together.

To find the gaming basement:
- Coming from Courtland Street (front of Hilton/back of Marriott)
    enter the Hilton lobby.
Go straight back until you reach the parking garage elevators.
Go down the escalator to the basement.
- Coming from inside the Marriott:
Go down to the level where the elevators stop (don't remember the name, but it's 1 below the lobby, 2 below the skywalks to the Hyatt and the malls)
Take the Skywalk to the Hilton, where you will be on the second floor
Go straight across the atrium (i.e. go around the atrium until you're straight across; this is a balcony)
Continue down the hall until you reach the escalator down to the lobby level. This should dump you by the parking garage elevator.
Go down the escalator to the basement.

Still going to the Fark party, but I thought I would like to shout out that New Glarus is on sale this week. So I am going to be stock piling up extra New Glarus for the trip to Dragon Con. So if anyone wants some New Glarus, let me know. I'll stock up on the kind you want.

I hope all of you have indelible memories of drunken pranking, runaway debauchery, weapons grade hangovers and a trail of hotel rooms that require remodeling.

Hoping to finally get to a con next year... GenCon or DragonCon are my top two (with a possibility of Templecon if I ever get back into warmahordes)

One question... DragonCon "tracks"... I can't seem to find a definition for what they are? Is the idea that you basically pick one and follow it, and events are set up in such a way as to maximize your ability to do a variety of things within that particular topic?

Oh man, I haven't LARPed in forever.
CSB time
They were play testing the LotR LARP, it was sometime in the 90's, and my buddy was an orc, I was a troll and I knew next to nothing about LotR (hey I was a Warhammer person).
We started fighting over some treasure and I remembered I had a magic wand that let me basically send a voicemail to anyone I knew. Being as I only knew Warhammer orcs I asked the guy running our part of the game who "da boss" was.
I, a lowly troll, sent a message to Saruman over a treasure dispute.
The look on the GM's faces is one I will never forget. "He's talking to who??" "How?" "What?"
Basically I got told to stfu and get back to work trying to kill good guys, but damn was it funny.
Even funnier when I finally found out, years later while watching the movies, who I basically used as a complaint department.

It took me awhile to figure this one out to, mostly cause I was never interested in much more than gaming or drinking.
Think of tracks as the wrapper that holds everything together.
The Doctor Who track contains everything Doctor Who related for example. All Doctor Who events fall into this track for purposes of organization and logistics.
So if you want to see an event that is Doctor Who related, you know it's going to be in the area of the Doctor Who track location.
That help?

Never take the streets, always take the skyways, unless you're going to the Hilton, then God be with you.
Water is everywhere, please drink. We hate picking up your passed out 300# self on day three of your questionable hygiene practices.
If your staying in the Hyatt, for the sake of everyone that has to sardine into an elevator with you, swear off onions, garlic, beans, hot sauce, etc for the weekend. Please.

There's more, but I'm tired.

The Hilton has been accessible by skyway from the Marriott for a while now. Not sure the name of level that skyway's on in the Marriott, but it's 2 down from the Hyatt and Mall skyways, 1 down from the main lobby, and conveniently on the level where the elevators stop (also the bottom level of most of the escalators). Enters the Hilton on the 2nd floor, just above the main lobby entrance. Takes a little doing to get between Hilton and Hyatt through the Marriott, but it beats waiting for the Hyatt elevators.

For the Sheraton, there's no indoor approach. I don't think there is for the Westin, either, but I've only been over there once.
