Fark Party
Host: stainedglassdoll
Description: Saint Louis Fark Party, June 1 - Get drunk and climb on stuff, TODAY, storm or shine
Date/Time: June 1, 2013 - 07:30 PM (local time)
Party Info: Meet me in Saint Louis!  The Midwest gets no love, as Farkers tend to flock to either coast. :(

Saint Louis Fark Party, June 1 - Get drunk and climb on stuff

The party itself I'd like to have at the City Museum in Saint Louis, dubbed a "playground for adults", where you can get drunk and climb on and in all kinds of shiat (for a better glimpse, check out  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Whf1SR7ZAxc). It's the kind of place that would be perfect for a bunch of Farkers. General admission on the weekends is $10 after 5 pm.

For those of you that want to hang out for the weekend, Saint Louis has a ton of great stuff to do in the summer. Aside from the Arch (you can ride up to the top!), there is a great park called Forest Park, that is home to many museums and an awesome freakin' zoo, all free to the public. There is a beautiful Botanical Gardens as well, that is lovely to walk around in. We could even have a picnic in the park, if anyone was interested.  There are lots of bars and a great foodie scene, as well. If any events during that weekend come up, I'll post them here as well. :)

If anyone wants to organize specific outings as a group, just post and we can use this thread for planning.

UPDATE: For hotel reservation information, Bukharin has set something up for farkers at the Rennaissance Grand. To reserve a room, you can contact him at Bukharin[nospam-﹫-backwards]krafartlu*com

I've always wanted to go to this museum. Too bad St. Louis is, like, halfway across the country.

Hmm. I work in St. Louis and live in the Metro East. I'll certainly mark myself as a "maybe."

St Louis? Make it Kansas City, much more of a fun place to party.

2013-03-18 12:57:40 PM
City Museum is awesome!  When we took the kids there though, I couldn't get big red letters of "DEATH TRAP!" from flashing in my mind's eye, but it was a lot of fun.

2013-03-18 12:58:49 PM
or, maybe, plan one in kc

2013-03-18 12:58:52 PM
It looks like there is fun to be had there.
I hope you guys find it.

Columbia Mo farker here who will try to be there if wife and I can coordinate time off..

2013-03-18 01:02:04 PM
I used to work in that building when it was part of the Direct Mail Corporation of America. Fun fact: The giant Praying Mantis used to worked in HR. If you got a letter saying you've been approved for a 10% pay raise and all you had to do was swing by HR to sign do some papers, don't do it. It was a trap.

2013-03-18 01:20:43 PM

I might be able to make that one.

2013-03-18 01:25:59 PM
I think I might have to organize a road trip from Chicago, mostly because I'm dying to meet Korben.

Man, even more incentive to move back to STL.

But the City Museum?  I've only been there a handful of times, but every time I did it was  children climbing on everything.  Seems like it'd be weird for a bunch of drunk farkers to show up for the museum playground.

I feel like some of my STL friends told me they have adults-only hours?

Anyway, Kansas Citian here who might consider Megabusing over.

/All you other cranky KC folks who wish there was a party organized here, well...we're the ones who'll have to organize it. There's what, like 10 KC farkers?

That's easily road-trippable.

As long as my schedule holds, count me and the wife in!

I do live in the immediate area too, so if I can be of any assistance with the organizing/logistics, please let me know. (EIP)

I LOVE the City Museum! I'm based in San Francisco, but we have always gone to STL annually to visit my mom's family, and each time we hit up the City Museum. You leave in great pain and covered in bruises, but it's so worth it. I even tinkered with holding a destination wedding there.

CSB: I was very drunk there a few years ago, when climbing through some mesh tube about 50 feet up, my wallet fell from my back pocket and into the massive ball pit below. It had lots of cash and my ID, which I needed to catch my flight the next day. So I staggered down and drunkenly yelled into the ball pit to all the kids, "whoever finds my wallet gets $20." About a dozen kids started diving through the pit, until one found it. Some of my cards had fallen out during the experience, and he dove back in and retrieved every one of them. Earned his $20.

After 5 pm on weekends, minors require adult supervision.

The last one I was at was at a place that served Black Thorn Pizza; I don't know if it was the restaurant itself or just a place that served it. Was anyone else there? There were only about a dozen people there and it was, gosh, maybe 6? years ago, maybe more. We also had a guest from KC who took pictures and posted them somewhere.

This place is @(#* amazing. I'm not sure if their rules changed but me and some college friends went around 6 years ago. 1) Showed up drunk. 2) Had Rum & Coke in my Nalgene. Paid the entrance fee and off I went. They have (had) a huge dodgeball pit. You could just set up and wail on people. Then climbed around all bits of the structures.

It was awesome.

Probably not needed, unless people want to stay in the same hotels or something.  If a lot of people want to go to dinner, maybe we can make reservations.  But if people want to set up a communal document, by all means, go ahead.  This is my first rodeo so I'm not really sure what's usually done.

2013-03-18 05:48:43 PM

stainedglassdoll: Probably not needed, unless people want to stay in the same hotels or something.

If people come in from out of town, corralling us all in one hotel is probably a good idea- it keeps people from getting lost and reduces the impact of any farkery or shenanigans that people may engage in.

I used to live on Country Knoll, then over by Lindenwood (the place I rented is now gone thanks to them), now in St. Peters by Laurel Park.

Definitely would consider going.  Planning to be out of town, though, for my daughter's dance competition.

I wondered how many Farkers were in the STL area.  I'm not very comforted with that thought, though.

I for one love the scenic beauty that is St. Louis north of Delmar Blvd.

You just can't beet a Fark party that you can walk to if you wanted.  I live about 20 blocks north of there.

Mrtraveler01:  I for one love the scenic beauty that is St. Louis north of Delmar Blvd.

There is a reason St Louis north of Delmar looks the way it does.  It rhymes with racism.  Oh wait, silly me.  It is racism.  Well, that and government corruption.

Ha! Another K&N Mo-Fallon farker here.  I'm supposed to be in Colorado that week for work, but it it falls through, I'm all for City Museum.  Maybe rent a party bus or shuttle to get the St. Charles Co peoples down to the city and back safely.

I'm excited!  Get excited!  Is there anything else people want to do while in town?  I can arrange a few activities.  The zoo and museums are nice, the botanical gardens are gorgeous.  Lots of good places to eat, too.  I'll check the calendar and see if anything is going on that weekend.

2013-05-01 08:12:38 PM
I'm really going to try to be there. Two factors that may make it more difficult: my toddler needs a sitter and my pregnant wife may get jealous if I go without her (and thus I need to persuade her to come along as well!)

I've never been to a Fark Party, but I've realized recently that my wife and I need to get out more. Having kids has a way of destroying your social opportunities because you're just so busy and tired all the time...

mikebellman: What is a Party? I have never been to one.

It's where you meet and hang out with other people in meat-space. Alcohol is usually involved, as it helps most of us come out of our shells and look at the other person's shoes when we're talking to them, as opposed to looking at our own shoes.

Hey, you should totally still come out and have a good time.  I'm pretty introverted too, but I'm excited to finally meet some Farkers.  Also, I'll probably stay sober that night as well (lightweight, have to drive, etc).  Don't worry too much what people will think, just be yourself and I'm sure we'll all get along just fine. :)

I lol'ed.

Saturday morning or afternoon I was thinking about spending the day in Forest Park.  There are free museums and a free zoo, so if anyone wants to hang out, shoot me an email.  Also, if anyone is interested in getting an early dinner and drinks at Schlafly Bottleworks (I'm thinking 5 pm to allow us time to digest and get to the City Museum by 7 or so), let me know.  Please EMAIL MEat stainedglassdoll at ultrafark dot com.  Once I have a better idea of how many people want to come to dinner, I may call ahead to reserve some tables.

I'm going to say the tentative meet-up point at City Museum is Cabin Inn(on the first floor, #7 on this map:  http://citymuseum.org/pdfs/map.pdf ).  I will have blank name tags for people, and will try to keep our fark headquarters there.  Hopefully it won't get too crowded!  I look forward to meeting everyone :)

I didn't read the whole thread; apologies in advance.

I have visited the St. Louis area. Also, my wife once made me watch an episode of some TV show that featured zombies and the St. Louis Arch.

This confluence of facts leads to this pointless public safety announcement: The arch in that stupid TV show is maybe a 1/10 scale model of the Arch in St. Louis. It is really farking tall. You cannot in fact climb on it unless you bring spiderman-style toys. If you would like to perceive this for yourself, you should go to the top and have a peek. It's not like being on top of a tall building; it's like being on an airplane.   Should you still be inclined to try, bring your own helicopter. Have fun with that, and please invite me. Thank you.

I agree with the rest of the people who say that St Louis has lots of great stuff to do and fun places to visit.

I live in N. City up by Crown Candy Kitchen (featured on "Man vs. Food" twice) and we have a great neighborhood (Old North St Louis).  Crown probably hasn't changed anything in the dining room in at least 60 years.  It's a nostalgia trip and the ice cream is great.  I personally recommend the Black Walnut and Oreo ice creams.

Be prepared for a line though.  On Saturdays they open at 10:30.  People start showing up around 10:00 and it's a small dining room.  If you get there at 10:35 you'll probably have a 30 minute wait for a table.  Anyone coming with more than four people should expect to have to wait extra long or get there extra early.  They have 2-person and 4-person booths only.

And if you want a souvenir of the neighborhood there is a small coffee shop a few doors north of Crown on 14th st.  They have ceramic coffee mugs for sale with the slogan, "I was mugged in Old North St Louis".  The neighborhood looks rough, because of so many falling down buildings, but isn't at all.

As of right now, both I and my wife (jetskimoo) should be able to make this.  Is there an official RSVP list, or similar?  If not, I can try and setup a Google Doc.  :)

As for food, there are some good options in downtown,, especially the Washington Ave. strip.  but, the neighborhood gets pretty shady (IMO) at night.  There's tons of good food outside of downtown, and I'd be happy to throw suggestions out there.  This is especially true if we're spreading this over more than one evening.

St. Louis local insider super secret: If you're wiling to stand outside the stadium at around 7:30am the day of any game, you can acquire what are called "first pitch" tickets. $11 gets you a voucher good for  pair located somewhere in the stadium. Arrive at the stadium about 30 min prior to game time to claim your tix, and you'll be let inside 15 minutes prior to the first pitch. If there are a bunch of farkers in town anyway, might be worth waiting with a group outside in the morning.

/I highly recommend bringing booze

Hey all,

Looks like the weather will be mid 80s, with scattered thunderstorms (so slight possibility the outdoor metal structures might be closed off).  I'll keep an eye on the forecast.

I think some of us were going to go to Schlafly Bottleworks (http://schlafly.com/bottleworks/menu/) for an early dinner (5:30-6ish, so we aren't too full running around the museum).  There are also concessions at City Museum if you prefer to eat there.

Some of us will also be going to dinner Friday evening, and will probably spend the day on Saturday at Forest Park going to the zoo or museums (depending on the weather).  The hotel is near the Metro stop, so please explore Saint Louis.  I happen to be fond of the botanical gardens.

Please  emailme at  stainedglassdoll at ultrafark dot com by friday if you are interested in going to dinner on EITHER Friday or Saturday, or hanging out at the park on Saturdayso I have an idea of how many people to expect.  Or just show up.  I'll try to keep things posted in this thread as they pop up.

Again, tentative  meetup at the City Museum will be at the CABIN INNon the first floor.  I'll have a name tag and big glasses so just look for me.

Probably not needed, unless people want to stay in the same hotels or something.  If a lot of people want to go to dinner, maybe we can make reservations.  But if people want to set up a communal document, by all means, go ahead.  This is my first rodeo so I'm not really sure what's usually done.

Our first fark party, <b>toilet engineer</b> just bought sticker name tags and a box of sharpees and I made sure the owners of the bar weren't gonna freak when 40 internet nerds showed up.

If nobody hears from MBK again I just want to say that he was breathing when I left.

I won't say the same for those vicious little dodge ball pit bastards. They had it coming.

We all had breakfast together, so I think you're in the clear.

Assuming the drives to Carbondale and Omaha, train to Chicago, and flight to SoCal all went off without a hitch.  Nice meeting you guys. Locals too.

Yep--we made it.

Sorry to have not said goodbye--went looking for everyone at about midnight and couldn't find y'all.  Had a great time; nice to meet so many fellow Farkers!  Let's do it again next year!

Wasn't able to make it. I was helping a co-worker clean up some storm damage. It sounds like it was a great time.

We had a great time as well, and it was awesome to meet you all!  We feel terrible that we had to leave a bit early, but after my wife slipped on the stairs, I did not want to mess around with guessing games on potential foot injuries.  :(

Thankfully, she'll be ok...just a couple of sprained toes and some bruising.  Some ice and few days rest, and she'll be good to go.  We do apologize though.

Again, it was a great event!  Thanks to stainedglassdoll for setting this up!

If you can make the 400 mile drive you're welcome to attend the Omaha party this Saturday. What you climb on is up to you.
