Fark Party
Host: Paranoia-'
Description: Fark Philly Up - Spend the day in Philly taunting animals and ringing bells, or meet us at night for a couple drinks. Saturday, July 20th at Oscar's. - The Final Countdown
Date/Time: July 20, 2013 - 09:00 PM (local time)
Party Info: Let's Fark Philly Up. On Saturday, July 20th, a group of Farkers will be invading Philadelphia. E-mail, call, Facebook PM, thread-talk, text, or sext your favorite Farkers to find out what they'll be doing and make plans together. I plan on spending the day at the zoo trying to get the monkeys drunk, then meeting up with some Farkers for dinner before the party. You're not invited, but I'm sure someone will hang out with you.

READ THIS PART PLEASE THANKS
Please visit PhillyFarkParty.tk so we can have an idea of what's going on and what needs to go on!
Facebook Event for the party: https://www.facebook.com/events/581864765181068/

DAY EVENTS

I think a day at the zoo would be awesome, followed by a nice hometown bar. We can also pepper in the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, dinner somewhere, and other things. Throw out suggestions, someone will hang out with you.

The zoo is open from 9:30 am until 5 pm. Admission is $20. $15 if we get 15 people or more. Add $5 per person if we want to get a personal guided tour.

From 6:30 pm to 10 pm the Philadelphia Zoo is holding a Summer Ale Festival. During this festival, "you will sample regional craft beers and savor delicious local cuisine while surrounded by brilliantly colored birds, majestic great apes and exceptional big cats that call the Zoo's lush gardens home."

General admission is $65.
VIP admission is $95. The website doesn't specify the difference between VIP and General. I'll find out eventually and update this post.
Designated Driver gets in for $35.
Six GA tickets for $330. 15% discount.

Tickets will NOT be available for purchase at the door. This event is limited to those 21 years of age or older and children will not be permitted. Valid I.D. required.

All tickets include a souvenir tasting cup, on-site parking and shuttle service to and from 30th Street Station, the most eco-chic way to travel to the Summer Ale Festival.

Night Events/Fark Party

Oscar's Tavern
is in a great location with a parking structure across the street. It's 3 miles from the zoo, 1 mile from Old City, with restaurants all around it. Those participating in the day Farking can meet up for a dinner at the Oyster House or other nearby place and then take a short walk to the bar.

This is a CASH ONLY bar! I apologize if that makes things difficult for anyone. There is an ATM on-scene. I would prefer some place that takes cards but cash-only seems to be really popular with Philly dive bars. I don't get it.

Some info on parking:

On street metering runs until 10 PM. From 4 PM to 10 PM on certain streets, you can park for 3 hours (notable exceptions are Walnut and Chestnut.) Sansom street itself has limited parking on the street due to it being narrow and having a lot of construction going on right now. There are parking garages throughout the area. There's a link in the comments to a parking lot search engine that also lists prices.

It does get busy on Saturday nights in the area. It might be even more crowded since "Wicked" is at the Academy of Music that night.

We have 1 month to go, so we should probably start really stapling down the specifics! Use one of the resources listed above if you'd like to participate in any pre-party activities and we will do our best to facilitate things for you.

Location: Oscar's Tavern

As a note: regardless of what the final plan is, I will be going dry for this event. I will be coming up from Maryland and can DD some people if needed.

Ooooh, sounds like fun. I missed the last Philly thing. This is a little far out to definitely commit, but I would really like to go.

If I'm still around.
I do have a tendency to wander.
months or even weeks could find me in a different state.

and frankly, I wouldn't mind not being around here in July.
the Philly area and I have not really got along so well.

I'd fly for this one.

Count me in.

2013-03-11 12:26:00 AM
So here's what we need to know:

Who's interested in the Pre-Party party? The zoo, the museums, etc?
What bars are good in the area? Think cheap prices, lots of space, easy to get to.

2013-03-11 12:51:06 AM
I'll go with "maybe." as it's march and philly is far.

Any baltimore farkers wanna carpool?

I think I had this discussion with you re: Newark Fark Party. I'm up in Cecil County, but I can take you from here to Philly and back. :P

2013-03-11 01:15:32 AM
Would it cost extra for Fife and Murder sharing a room?

If so, no - those are two people that I don't want to be "sharing".

With each other, that is.

Eastern State tour?...plenty of decent watering holes close by as well...

I'm 4 hours away, but I love Philly, so maybe me too. July is years away though.

IamPatSajak: It's kind of a lame zoo IMO. I am a firm maybe.

Yeah I'd be a fan of perusing the museums more than the zoo, and then barcrawling afterward instead of drinking at the zoo.

If you haven't been to the PMA, it's definitely worth it. Just down the Parkway from the PMA is the Rodin Museum, which is small but neat. Another option is the  Mütter Museum if you want to get your freak on. There's also the Franklin Institute, which has fun exhibits, and their planetarium and IMAX screen always have interesting shows. The Penn Museum is often overlooked but is well done.

And there are definitely many good watering hole options no more than a 15 minute walk from all those places.

2013-03-11 09:22:35 AM
The first party we threw there was at Sugar Mom's with about 10 farkers, I liked that place. We got there early evening and had most of the place to ourselves til it got busy later. Decent bar food. That weekend we also hit the Reading Market Beergarden, Eulogy Belgian beer bar (great food and a million beers), and the Mutter Museum to stare at oddities. I think Fife is still recovering from that. It's not for everyone but it's pretty neat.

The last party was in Downingtown about 45mins from the city at Victory Brewery, over twice as many people showed for that. The beer was a bit meh but the food was good and we had a great time.

We'll probably be living on the best coast by then but we'd be a maybe for the weekend if we're still here.

2013-03-11 09:37:17 AM
I'm going to have to pass on the zoo portion and probably the beer fesitval. $65 is a bit much. I'll be at Dirty Frank's with the hipsters.

2013-03-11 09:50:56 AM
Interesting. Had to skip our Philly trip this weekend. That said July is pretty far off. Definite most likely probably maybe.

2013-03-11 09:57:17 AM
Wow, you're gonna hit the Zoo on a Saturday?  That'll get the rage going.

2013-03-11 09:58:14 AM
You also might want to take into account that the zoo and some museums are close but Old City (where the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, and anything...old will be) is the opposite side of the city. Philly is very walkable but that's kind of a hike.

2013-03-11 10:22:01 AM
I am interested but have a tough time plotting that far out on the calendar so count me as tentative and I hope work does not mess me up and send me somewhere.

I agree with the beer festival. I plan on going to the zoo, but skipping the beer festival. Even $35 is a bit much to just be the DD, after already spending the whole day walking around the zoo. And it's funny you said that about Dirty Frank's; I almost put that in my little (notes) but didn't want to pass judgement without having been there. It was top of my list originally until I realized it was cash only. That's when McGillin's topped it. Still, if Farkers don't mind Cash Only or there's an ATM on-site or nearby, I'd still like to go there.

As for distance, I plan on driving around the city. I'll have 4 open seats for any Farkers that'd like to tag along.

Sasquach: Eastern State tour?...plenty of decent watering holes close by as well...

I'll look into that and come back with a proposition if it seems feasible.

E-Brake: Sugar Mom's

How long ago were you guys there? I just looked it up and liked some of the reviews: "a steady stream of 90's music, pool tables, jukebox, and a very chill atmosphere," until coming across the locals talking about how they cut their menu in half, jacked up the prices, and the place got LOUD. $6 for a draft seems a little steep. Still, the descriptions of the venue itself sound pretty cool. It's on the 'possibility' list.

2013-03-11 11:52:48 AM
A Philly Phark that's *actually* in Philly?? I'm all in.  I'll even ride my bike, wrong way, on the sidewalk, just to get there....

Paranoia-': Any opinions on Oscar's Tavern?

Alright; I've looked into this place a bit more. I called them, they said they have plenty of room for a get-together of 20 or more people. It was listed in at least two different "Best Bars of Philly" lists, (one had this to say: "Let's see, the ceiling is caked with the brown ick of a few decades' worth of tobacco smoke; the clientele are salt-of-the-earth blue-collar types who could drink Bukowski under the table; and it's the home of the $3 honker, a 23-ounce pour of refreshingly cold lager or Pabst. If the top three most critically important aspects of any good bar are 1) ambience, 2) a polite and efficient waitstaff and 3) the ability to buy a round of drinks for friends with a $10 bill, Oscar's has all its bases covered. This place is a bar. It's a beautiful thing."), it's only 3 miles from the Zoo and 1.3 miles from Old City. There doesn't appear to be any dedicated parking, but Google Maps shows a structure across the street that looks like a multi-floor parking structure. There is also a lot of meter parking in the area.

Unless any Farkers have serious objections, I think this would be ideal. Just my two cents. =)

This is risky. PPA is notoriously evil.

I guess I should have mentioned that I have a deep, abiding love of dive bars. Unfortunately those tend to be the places where hipsters go as well. There is an ATM on-site in the bar.

I know a lot of cities stop charging at meters after a certain hour, often around 7pm. Does Philly do this, or are Meters checked 24/7?

$6 for a Yuengling. I could understand a nice snobby IPA or or something, but Yuengling? Eh.

Dive bars are fun. A much more comfortable attitude and atmosphere. Laid back, relaxing. I definitely feel ya on the love for them.

I don't park much in Philly because I take public transportation and because of the pain in the ass that is PPA so someone else would have better info about this.

I don't think too many people are going to want to walk the parts of Philly near the Zoo, unless you do a quick cross over the bridge toward the Fairmount/Art Museum area. I guess it depends on where you want to end up, and either way, definitely a hike.

That being said, I'll be keeping tabs on this. Its been a long time since I've gone to a Fark Party.

My favorite (read: smokin' hot) bartender just quit there after being an icon for years to move out-of-state... not a lot of space, but the best 'dive-bar' you're likely to find plus perpetual $3.25 22-oz Yeungling Happy Hour : )

I'll see if I can't tempt my friend to make a trip back just to witness the inevitable chaos a Fark crew will bring to the evening table haha

It was a couple years ago so it might've changed. We got there early in the evening when it was mostly deserted, had some apps and played some games, then split when it got crowded. The only other bar we hit was Eulogy but that's probably not good for a party, seems crowded and not real big. But I recommend hitting it for lunch if you have time.

Let it be known; if any hipster stink-eyes or judges any Farkers, male or female, I will white knight the shiat out of them. If I don't lose too much weight by then I may still be an imposing figure. Also, I should have a solid beard. That helps.

It's a bit far. I guess the primary concern is whether I can find a place to stay if I do go.

Johnny Brenda's, Standard Tap, Memphis Tap Room are hipster joints in Northern Liberties with great beers and food that are worthy of consideration, although not as central as Oscar's (the old Sam Adams Brewhouse/Oyster Bar?)  or Fergie's or McGillan's. But McGlinchey's or Dirty Frank's are another level of dive bar. Great places to meet up, reasonable prices, decent selection. Honorable mention: Khyber Pass.

And this will serve as a bookmark. If I'm not sleeping in a tent at a music festival, I'll be there. I live in Wissinoming, for you locals.

I rang the Liberty Bell back in 1970.  Our school trip did the obligatory Liberty Bell visit, and since it hadn't been rung since FOREVER, my cohort and I crawled under the rope and hurled the clapper into the uncracked portion.  GONG.

And then, suddenly, nothing happened.  I think our biatch teacher was envious, personally.  The tour guide looked a little stunned, but he was stoked.  Which is why you shouldn't smoke pot.

Anyway, I probably won't be there.  Again.

Oscar's is great. Try the Long Island Ice Tea and then try another. Then see if you can go "around the world" with every drink on their cocktail place mat. I think they still have the $3.25 pint of Yuengling. Be careful, though, it fills up fast.

Gotta love another person who appreciates Dirty Frank's.

Dirty Franks and Oscars are good bars, but way too small given the crowds they get on a weekend night.  I'd recommend Drinker's West in University City.  It's closer to the 30th St station, takes credit, has a taco eating contest, and has plenty of room.

And Schultz didn't die via some random shooting in Seattle.

Is Bill Burr coming?

2013-03-28 12:04:34 AM
Just a 3 month reminder/bump (coming at you a week late).

The Fark Party will be at Oscar's Tavern. It is a cash only hipster/dive type bar. You don't have to like hipsters, it's just the perfect type of place to have a Fark Party at.

The Day Time activities are still in the air. I'm thinking, at this point, we should just make a list of fun things to do in Philly and Farkers can arrange their own hangouts through this thread. For instance, if anyone is interested in meeting up for dinner prior to the Fark Party, let me know!

Mr. Murder: Penis

That is not an appropriate day time activity, and I strongly suggest that no liters (or TFarkers, for that matter) take Mr. Murder up on his offer.

Considering it. Live in the Harrisburg area, would be interested in joining a carpool if anyone is coming through here.

For those who dont know, Frankford hall is a great time. Though the decor isn't quite authentic, they have an amazing selection of German beers and pretty good food.  The place is set in an old warehouse with glass rollup doors that lead to the outside. In nicer weather they open them up to the outside so the place kind of turns into a giant biergarten. The handfull of times that I've been, there's been German Society families show up in full liederhosen/dirndl garb which is kind of a cool addition to the overall experience.  I wouldn't consider it expensive. I think a liter of beer (about 2.5x normal beers) is $14.  There's also free sets of jenga and a ping pong table

http://frankfordhall.me/menu/#draft

I like the Eastern State idea.  Out of town farkers can park in a $5 for 24hr garage on Spring and 16th and its probably a 20 minute walk down museum mile to Eastern State, heading past things like the free library, art museum and Rodin Museum.  I think tours for ESP are about $20-25 and there's plenty of cool dive bars in the area.  Its not hard from there to get to FH/Norther Libs area and it is an easy jaunt on the Market/Frankford L train ($1.50) to get back to the main stations or the garage.

To get your money's worth out of a $65 zoo trip and beer tasting doesn't seem worth the time if you wanted to see other things.  Add to the fact that parking in center city is damn near impossible (Especially on Sansom on a saturday)

2013-03-28 08:08:01 AM
Put me down for a "maybe" this early in the game.

I'm in the Harrisburg area too, and hate driving in/around Philly.  Depending on the cost, I was thinking of just taking the train.

I hear Club Onyx is nice.

2013-03-28 09:16:17 PM
Watch out for Sansom Street. Three of the four fire hydrants there are suspected of harboring hipster sympathies and the hipster Dunkin Donuts claims to have the best dark wave jungledubstep but it's really just a broken coffee maker.

Here's a link to a parking lot search engine that also lists prices.

It does get busy on Saturday nights in the area. It might be even more crowded since "Wicked" is at the Academy of Music that night.

Since I'm in "stumble home drunk" range of Oscar's, I guess I should show up.

I don't know. We've been doing it for years on Fark. It's just habit, I guess.

If we're still on this side of the country by July 20th, we'll be there!

Maybe! I'd like to get in on Saturday morning and will be looking for touristy stuff to do during the day.

Farkers going to look at animals at the zoo seems kind of ironic.

I'll be there.

Are dinner plans still the Summer Ale Festival at the zoo? Or are more flexible/affordable options on the table?

I planned on going to the Oyster House or some other nearby restaurant. The Summer Ale Festival is still an option for anyone that was interested in going, of course!

Maybe to bar.  No to zoo.  Giraffe restraining order.

2013-04-20 12:24:17 PM
Definitely looking forward to this. My last fling in Philly, since later this year I'm moving to New Hampshire to help my fellow Free Staters build our Libertarian Paradise. I just bought an 80 foot single wide to move to my 20 acres.

Ya know, while the Fark 99% go to the zoo, the Fark 1% *could* get together to hit the Art Museum, the Franklin Institute, Barners, etc. on the Parkway....

Eastern State? Dang, should have done this last year - my cousin had an installation there. It's gone now. http://www.easternstate.org/visit/regular-season/history-artist-insta l lations/judith-schaechter-battle-carnival-and-lent

I likely would not be doing anything pre-party.

ami5000: Philly is very walkable but that's kind of a hike.

agreed - but for those who don't want to do public transportation, driving in the city isn't bad. parking can be a pain in the ass, but walking a few blocks from your parking spot isn't too bad

also, i KNOW someone's going to be wanting cheesesteaks, no? we rather like tony lukes and jims but that's just a matter of preference. i'm not that picky. if we go to jim's, though, someone will need to order for me because i swear to christ if they yell at me (and they will, if i delay more than 5 seconds) i will reach across the counter and choke a biatch out

Either of you ever been to the Boston Children's Museum? The entire core of the building--I think it's three floors high--is a jungle gym. Parents drop their kids off at the first floor and meet them on the third as the kids climb up through the maze.* THAT is the ultimate Short People Competition as an adult.

I'll be there, it sounds fun. I've been on Fark for 10+ years and haven't made it to a Fark Party cause I never was close to one until now.  My divorce will be almost final by the end of July, so you all can help me celebrate.

Only 8 blocks from my apartment BUT, I'll be at a conference in Atlanta, GA that weekend!  Why me!!!!!!

We're one month out. Time to knuckle down and buck up, or something.

Bukharin has generously reserved several one- and two-bedroom rooms at the nearby Inn at the Penn, about 2 miles from Oscars, for $149 a night. It seems to be the cheapest nice place available, however you're more than free to find your own hotel. If you would like one of the rooms Bukky has reserved feel free to contact him directly: bukharin[nospam-﹫-backwards]krafartlu*com

If you need help getting to Oscar's, either from a hotel, train/bus/plane station, zoo, museum, jail, etc., please fill out the little survey I put together at PhillyFarkParty.tk. I'm not hot-linking it because for some stupid reason different browsers react differently to .tk links. Some won't direct to them if you don't have www. Some won't direct to them if you do have www. So I'll let you put it in yourself. You'll figure it out; just don't leave me a message saying the link is broken. The survey is up and I just tested it myself a moment ago.

If you fill out that survey we can match up Farkers that are offering rides with those that need rides. We can also make group e-mails for people that want to go to the zoo, certain museums, or wherever. Trying to make things as easy as possible for you. Don't let us over-complicate it, though. You're still free to simply show up and get drunk!

Finally, we do have a Facebook Event created for this as well, to also help facilitate transportation and pre-party plans. https://www.facebook.com/events/581864765181068/

I hope to see you there!

2013-06-20 09:27:46 AM

I dunno, it depends on when the last rainstorm was--I dove in with some other people once after a long run and it didn't smell at all. But it was at the end of a long week of calm, sunny days, so all the crap had time to wash away and settle out.

/Also, you want to avoid thinking about it too much.

Vanity6: So zoo or no zoo....

It all depends on whether or not you want to! If so, I strongly suggest joining the Facebook event or filling out the Fark Party Survey, both which I linked in my last post, to aid you in meeting up with other Farkers keen to hit up the zoo.

2013-06-21 12:09:12 AM
We gotta hit up a bar in Kensington. It is were the real night excitement can be found.  You can actually see herpes run across the streets.

The zoo? Really?

Screw that, we need to go to the Mutter museum!

2013-06-21 03:51:10 PM
I'll be crashing at my girlfriend's place in West Philly.

She informed me that on Friday the 19th, the English Beat will be doing a concert at Eakins Oval by the museum, if anyone is interested.

2013-07-01 12:11:04 PM
Just a reminder: we DO have hotel rooms reserved and have found other decent hotel rates. Feel free to contact myself, E-Brake, or Bukharin if you are in need of a hotel room. If you're interested in SHARING a room with another Farker please email me. There are other Farkers interested in splitting.

Another reminder: parking can be dicey! I would suggest arriving early to get nearby street or garage parking.

If you are coming via train, plane, or bus and need help getting to the party, fill out the Philly Fark Party Survey. Link can be found somewhere in these comments, or in the big description. I have a couple extra seats in my car still, and other Farkers have also said they're available to chauffeur, DD, transport as needed.

Finally, if you're interested in the pre-Party events, of any sort, and would like to join other Farkers in said events, PLEASE fill out the Survey. A lot of people are not from the area and would like to team up and see the sights. There are museums, restaurants, zoos, memorials, bells, and boats galore.

As always, we also encourage you to join the Facebook Event page as well, where you can discuss your plans and arrange to meet up with other Farkers. We've done our best to make everything as easy as possible for you, so there are no excuses! (I'm looking at you, RexTalionis)

Shalom

2013-07-14 05:25:58 PM
The Zoo's a bit of a jaunt, not to be confused with "jawn," from center city.  It's also inconvenient timing for an evening get together.  I'm up for the taxi ride but would prefer other, more local, activities.

Museums (not just date day at Mutter, hit the BF Parkway or galleries to the east), Penn's Landing/Old City, South Street (East and West versions), Reading Terminal Market for mid-activity food fueling, firing range, Italian Market, Eastern State Penitentiary, brewery tour or local food/pub crawl would be fun, too.

You'll be fine. =) Fark parties, in my experience, are very laid back, open, and welcoming. Also, you should recognize us pretty easily. I'll be supplying "Hello, My Name Is..." cards. Get excited!

My girlfriend had suggested Pod in University City (very near the Inn at Penn) on Friday evening for conveyor-belt sushi.  I'll likely be getting in around 7-7:30 depending on the traffic.

Plenty of decent bars in University City as well to gather at and mingle. Shouldn't be too crazy now that school is out.

We're planning on hitting the Mutter on Saturday with whoever wants to go.  Remember that you can't take photographs and it's pretty quiet.

We are also happy to help out with daytime day-drinking excursions on Saturday.

Just a heads up to folks looking for rooms, it's looking pretty tight and expensive this weekend (insert joke about someone's mom) so plan accordingly. Also, the bar's going to be packed Saturday night so keep an eye on this thread for where we'll be sitting, etc.

Anyone up for Mutter on Saturday, EIP. Looks like the zoo's out for most folks since it'll be a zillion degrees this weekend, so we're checking out indoorsy things.

Is anyone bringing Cards Against Humanity? If not will pack that up.

Also, heads up that Oscar's Tavern is cash only and they said they do NOT have an ATM and that the closest ATMs are on either 15th or 16th streets.

Hey Philly partiers!

Doing a little recon for the venue, in addition to what  E-Brake said, I'm also seeing (according to Yelp) that there's an ATM in 1518 Bar & Grill next door, and I called and they said there are ATMs on 15th and 16th streets. Oscar's is pretty low-cost, so a $20 bill will go a long way there.

Note that Yelp says it's a smoking bar but I called and confirmed it's definitely non smoking. *whew* that was almost a deal-breaker for us.

Anyhow, this street has 3 bars on it, so if Oscar's gets a little long in the tooth, we can hop a bit. There's also a few blocks south on 15th which looks decent.

Updates will be posted here.

According to Google there are several bar and bar-type places just on that one street. Looks like a great area to bar hop!

There are a ton of bars in that area that are all well within walking distance.

Yep, the map doesn't show it, but a one more block over is Rittenhouse Square. Lots of nice bars and restaurants right there.

Try the duck fat french fries at Village Whiskey on 20th.

(From my post on FB):
There's TD, Wells Fargo and PNC on Broad, BoA on 16th @ Moravian, Citizens in the Bellevue (I think it's downstairs in the food court area...), Sovereign at 15th and Market, etc.

James72: Try the duck fat french fries at Village Whiskey on 20th.

500 Degrees at 15th and Samson have truffle duck fat fires. They also have good burgers (smaller version of Rouge's burger since both are owned by the same people.)

Also, anyone planning on outdoor activities today, like the zoo, be sure to drink lots of water. We both got dehydrated yesterday after just an hour outside doing the Independence Hall tour.

Great info, thank you!

If Oscar's doesn't have tables or is too packed or noisy, folks may move to a nearby bar. Watch this space, we'll post updates here and in the FB event page too.

Hey, sorry, guys, I can't make it. I've spent too much money in the last month and I can't afford to go.

E-Brake and I will be at Oscar's starting at 7:30 tonight and will see if we can procure a table.

Hey everyone. First of all, huge thanks to E-Brake and make me some tea. They've been amazingly helpful with all of this, especially when my trip to Washington got extended. I just got back to the East Coast this morning. Jumping in the shower now, then heading to Philly!

I promise you all, I did call Oscar's months ago and warn them we were coming! I don't know what happened with the tables, but hopefully everything will still work out! Can't wait to see everyone there!

Blushing Wall Flower: I don't want to be secretly judged by hipsters while I drink. These better be some nice, friendly hipsters.

The only hipster there was griffer.

Good times guys, I think we had about 25 folks turn out. Oscar's took good care of us and we occupied about half the bar at some point. Thanks for Paranoia-' and E-Brake for helping to cobble this together.
