Jon Stewart to Reddit: you don't matter

Backstory: Reddit has been pushing support for the Stewart/Colbert rally since its inception, possibly since before its inception.

At the Rally For Sanity press conference on Saturday, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, asked Stewart and Colbert a question: what role did the Internet play in convincing you to hold this rally? The response: "it didn't hurt."

Question at around 1:40
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/jon-stewart-and-stephen-colbert-hold-post-rally-to- re store-sanity-press-conference/

Did you hear that Reddit? All that work you put into getting the word out, organizing meetups, and convincing people to go "didn't hurt". All that initial support in getting the ball rolling on this rally a few months back was great, but it wasn't a factor. Thanks for your meaningless and futile support that Comedy Central really didn't need at the end of the day to get a surprise crowd of 250,000 people to the rally. Did you hear that Internet? You had no role in this either, it was all Comedy Central all the way.

Colbert doesn't get a pass on this either, his "thanks Reddit for raising half a million dollars for our charity but it didn't affect attendence one way or the other" comment is a backhanded compliment at best.

And to say this all live, in a press conference, to the co-founder of a community of millions that did everything in its power to get the word out past its own readers to the greater internet, that is flat out disrespectful and wrong. Alexis is a friend of mine, and he's a super nice guy. He would never dream of saying this to Jon Stewart but I will: you owe Alexis an apology and you owe Reddit an apology. I'll stop short at saying you owe The Internet an apology because honestly I think The Internet owes us all an apology for a number of things, Justin Bieber notwithstanding.

In the clip you'll notice Stewart uses part of his answer to Alexis' question to make the point that Comedy Central had the idea for this rally "months" before Reddit did. Which is really odd considering Alexis didn't ask or imply that Reddit gave Comedy Central the idea for the rally in the first place. Sounds like someone feels a litle guilty about something. Who thought of it first doesn't matter, it is impossible to deny that Reddit's actions encouraged Comedy Central to actually pull the trigger. Except Stewart did, right to Alexis Ohanian's face, in a live press conference.

Why am I so bent about this? First and foremost, because a friend of mine got smacked down on live TV by a guy he helped, and I can't stand by and do nothing about it without at least saying something. But also because Daily Show writers have been doing essentially the same thing to me, every single day for the past 10 years. They use Fark every day to source material, and haven't mentioned Fark on air even one single time. It's the same attitude toward Reddit: "sure doesn't hurt, but not a significant contribution." Thanks to Fark, your writers don't have to go far to fill your shows up with material for you to use. Every writer I've met thanks me vociferously for Fark and tells me how much easier it makes their jobs. Sure that's not worth a daily mention, but I would think at least one in the last 10 years. It has yet to happen. I've learned to live with it, but Alexis is my friend and he does not deserve this kind of treatment. Especially considering the effort Reddit put into promoting the rally.

I'm not implying they owe Reddit or Fark any credit for the success of the Rally, that's definitely not the case. Comedy Central did the bulk of the work, that can't be disputed. This is about common courtesy. If someone does you a favor, a thank you is a kind and appropriate response. In Reddit's case, "it doesn't hurt" is a slap in the face. It discounts all the effort they went through - and they went through a lot. And they weren't the only ones, several other large web communities pitched in as well.

Here's my proposal: Jon Stewart should apologize for discounting the impact that Reddit and other Internet communities had on this rally, or next time The Internet should remember Comedy Central thinks they don't count and should show them what happens when "The Internet" actively works to convince people to not attend. Because if Reddit had put similar effort into convincing people not to attend, the crowd size would have been far smaller than anticipated. And if you don't believe me, let's see how it goes next time if Stewart makes the wrong decision.

PS: pretty sure this post will guarantee that I and/or Fark never get a mention on The Daily Show but that wasn't happening anyhow.

STEWART DOESN'T CARE ABOUT NASKAR!

2010-11-01 04:32:37 PM
skiptomyloop: Oh, and Jon Stewart, let me give you a little advice. Most of you comedians on tv (especially the ones saying "I'd be a top, no questions!") would try bottoming once "just to see if you like it". You'd fall in love with it and that's all she wrote.

But, and this is the point I'm getting to, you're lazy-asses (literally and figuratively). You wouldn't keep your holes tight. I'm not saying you'd get "the goat" or anything, but under the constant pounding you'd be begging for, it would get a little worn out.

Well, guess what guys. You know how women gossip about their guys? That's how we tops are about you bottoms. Everyone would know about your loose asses. You won't be able to give that sh*t away.

You think bottoming is easy and you don't have to do any work? You're wrong. And when your dance card is empty, night after night, you'll think back to the little piece of advice Drew gave you and a light bulb will go off.

You're welcome.

OK here goes: It'll stretch but it goes back to normal within 24 hours. People who have the "goat" going on are fetishists who actively stretch and must do it constantly.

It doesn't have to be brown, grainy and smelly. There are products that can be found at any drug store to eliminate any trace of fecal matter, and most gay men are extremely fastidious when it comes to matters of personal hygeine.

It's not painful if proper care is taken beforehand (foreplay) and both partners are willing to take time to prepare. It can be a very intimate, caring and loving experience.

The large majority of gay sex in a relationship isn't about anal sex. There are so many other ways to be intimate.

This thread is the biggest "wheels falling off the wagon" Fark moment since the site re-design and the resulting "You'll get over it" post.

Actually, I've seen and agreed with this argument a few times, and it makes me wonder... who gets paid when Fark sells a Headline T-Shirt? I looked at the shirt FAQ and it doesn't say that proceeds go to the subby (Unless I'm a moron who can't reed gud.) Does that mean that Drew just pockets it? That he just takes the money that the uncredited work of others gets him? Wouldn't that make this blog post even more flaming idiocy?

Do you feel better about yourself, Drew? Are you part of the "cool" group around here now? You're one of the edgy Farkers, right? The one who lambastes others' preferences, sneakily posts flamewar threads, drops pithy one-liners at the most opportune moments?

Man, I want to be just like you, submitter. I want to be the guy who thinks that Fark is a "community", and who thinks that he has "friends" around here. What's the newest cliche, submitter? Can you teach me? I'd probably just do it wrong anyway, right?

You know, submitter, it's easier to masturbate to 30-second porn clips if you wash the Cheeto powder off your fingers first. F*ck you, you worthless cocksneeze. You're the dumbf*ck who complains about Fark being "ruined", because you treat the place like your own little private playground, and when the bully pushes you off the slide, you cry about it.

Drew, this is just another goofy little niche of the internet. People here pretend to like each other so that they feel like their lonely, pathetic lives have meaning and substance. You want me to pour you another drink? Should I take my pants off? Should I narrate my actions in the third person, surrounding the text with asterisks so that you know I'm actually sitting here doing it?

No?

Maybe you should reconsider the series of choices you've made in your life so far to post a headline like this. Look around you. What have you got? What have you got to look forward to? A few more years of dicking around with people on the internet? Then what? You probably don't even have any real friends, do you? Does your family even try to keep in touch with you? I doubt it.

That's why you're here, posting headlines like these. It's OK, we all need our attention. For you, imagining that you're clever must give you a real rush. But it also just might be the Mountain Dew. Or the deep-vein thrombosis. You should really get up and go outside.

The world's a scary place, submitter, but a tough guy like you can handle it, right?

Heysomefarkingpenguinatemysammich!: I thought you were taking your ball and going home? I,the pus faced cockmonkey, want to know why you're still here.

Once upon a time .

In a deep, dark forest, there lived an old hermit in a
log hut. He was forced to live in that hut, because
he was afraid . Afraid of having to face himself.

You see, long ago, when the hermit had been young, he
had been a prince. He was not really a great prince,
but he valued all that he possessed, and to him, it
was great.

Now, about the time of his coming of age, the prince
fell in love, but to his parents dismay, and to the
dismay of his people, he had fallen in love with an
elven maid. And, as all people know, the elves are an
inconsistent people loving only what they choose when
they choose; discarding things when they tire of them.

What most people did not know, however, was that the
elven people thought the same of them.

So, how was it that the prince fell in love with this
maiden?

Well,

One fine night as the young prince was out riding, he
heard a strange music coming from the woods nearby.
Now, being partial to music and being rather lonely,
he decided, against his better judgement, to go and
look.

So riding though the woods, he at last came up on a
beautiful maid with hair spun of the moons light and
skin as fair as blushing roses. She was playing upon
a strange sort of harp, and its melody was of the
nature of sorrow and lost love. So, he stayed and
watched her for a while, growing to know her through
the song. And in his heart, he found peace and an
answering song to his own heart.

But, when she ended her song, he realized that she was
an elf, and he realized as well, that, too late, he
wasin love, truly in love, with her.

She did not seem to have noticed him at all, but now
she turned towards him, as if she had sensed him.

Fearfully, she asked, Who are you, and why have you
come?

Carefully he stepped out and knelt before her on one
knee, saying, Lady, forgive me for intruding, but I
heard your music and knew a longing to know what it
was. And so, I came upon you, though when I reached
this spot I was entranced, as if hearing my soul speak
to me through you. Truly, I have found love this
night.

And the maid, smiling, was fascinated by this curious
and handsome stranger. But, you see, because she was
an elf, she knew something more of him than even he
himself knew. She knew that he held within himself a
great power he could bond with another, soul to
soul.

Now, as time progressed, these two continued to meet
each other and grow closer. At times, the prince
would see, for a brief instant, the strength and power
he possessed, but he shrugged it off as being too
fantastic too unreal.

This truly frustrated the elven maid at times, but she
loved him, so she tried to be understanding and help
him see. But one night, while the prince was far
away, visiting another kingdom, the elven maid grew
weak and was seduced by darkness into lying with
another man. In horror and shock, the elven maid was
led to rash thought and the next night found herself
in bed with an old lover.

Realizing what she had done the next day, she tried
not to tell the prince, but, as he was her only
friend, she eventually broke down and told him.

The prince was truly at a loss in both mind and soul,
but he truly loved the maid; so, he decided that he
would remain her friend and try to set things right.

All of this took time and patience, but in the end,
the prince persevered. He brought peace to his love.
But, in his own heart, he could not find peace.

He began to see things in his love he had never
noticed before. He began to doubt her, to doubt
himself. And so darkness settled on his heart. But
as he was prince, the darkness settled on his parents
as well and on his people.

Time passed, and the elf maid began to see this
darkness. When she tried to address it, however, it
would lash back out at her. And so finally, in
despair, she forgot how to try. And so darkness fell
upon her heart as well.

But God, seeing this strange darkness, sent a light to
the elven maid in the form of another elf. Talking to
him, the maiden realized that she was destroying all
that she strove for. But he also told her that to
change it she would either have to change herself or
else release her hold upon the prince.

So, in agony, the maid tortured herself, not knowing
what to do. She asked the prince for a reprieve from
their visits for a while, and threw herself into her
music.

After having been away from his love for such a great
time, however, the prince longed to see the elf maid
and to be with her. So, he went to find her.

To her surprise, she was both happy and sad to see her
love, for, she knew that this would either be the end
or the true beginning of their relationship.

They spent a great deal of time talking as night
slowly fell. He could tell something was troubling
her, but she would not tell him. He grew suspicious
of her and let his fear and anger rule him. He begged
her to let him stay the night with her, but when she
refused, he knew she was holding something back.

He threatened her, saying that if he left it would be
forever, and she, knowing this and feeling heartbroken
told him to go.
