Hey there, we have a change coming and we wanted you to have a heads up about it, even though most of you will never notice it.

For the last few years, advertisers have been been begging us to use interstitials on Fark. We've always told them no, because 1) it's annoying as hell, and 2) it's annoying as hell. They've kept asking and we've turned them down every time, but they still come back the next month and ask again. It's not that we don't need the money, which helps keep the site running and helps us with various staffing needs, but that we couldn't think of a way to make it work that wouldn't suck for you. We've never wanted it to mess up your user experience, but we also don't like seeing that money flowing to other sites when we're doing our best to stay afloat.

Even though it's been shot down every other time it's been discussed, there may be a middle ground where we can do something that doesn't affect 99% of you. Here's what we're implementing: we've made an arrangement to allow interstitials for non-logged-in users at a rate of one per day. If you're logged in, you won't see it. A person that's not logged in would see it once in a 24-hour period. The advertisers would like to see more than that, but this is all we're willing to allow. While most of you will never notice this change, we figured a heads-up was still in order.

If you're logged in and you're seeing an interstitial ad, it's likely not related to this (in the past it's been remnant ads that we never approved), so please let us know immediately so we can go smack the advertiser. We're hoping that this can work where it's under your radar but still helps us out.

Smokey the Bare: Fark should just get a small wacky-wavy-inflatable-arms-flailing-tube-man to sit in the bottom right corner of the screen (you know, the big grey area) while reading through the threads.

I thought we agreed to call that the politics tab.

2010-04-19 04:56:29 PM
Heck, why don't you guys create a CAPTCHA so that the person has to read the interstitial and respond, just to be uber annoying. Keeps the bots out for sure!

2010-04-19 04:57:10 PM
Annoying as hell. = bad
We dont' see it = good
Drew makes some $ to keep runnng = good.
Goods > Bads.

I'll probably develop some sort of syndrome from having to click through an advertisement.

jackiepaper: Sparingly and prudently used

Those are two words that have no place in advertising.

Yeah, once per day. Just like how TotalFark members don't see any ads. Things change, and it's why I do NOT turn off Adblock like was requested...

The advertisers would like to see more than that, but this is all we're willing to allow.

StrangeQ: Okay, so if those are interstitials, what's the word for those ads that popup when you hover over certain keywords on some pages? Those annoy the fark out of me, doubly so because it's usually some Bing advertisement.

Bing ads can choke on a bag of Google dicks.

wmoonfox: For the record, yeah, those of us who are intelligent paranoid enough to set our cache to empty after the browser closes would see it more than once per day. See above for how much I care, though.

This ranks at about the same level as the commercials on tv that are twice as loud as the program itself.

No, I won't buy XXX because you scream it at me. In fact, I will go out of my way NOT to purchase it.

Doesn't bother me, and good on Drew and the rest of the Fark crew for being up-front. I remember when those freak pop-up ads came to town and the admins quickly got rid of them.

I have adblock disabled for Fark and Totalfark out of respect, and because I'd like to see this place keep going for another 10 years.

Thanks for the heads-up but I don't think I'll even notice. And no, I don't know what that word means either.

Change is bad. We fear change.

So, basically. Those who caught this post will remember to log in. But new users might not read down the blog history in order to see it.

eh, it's annoying to log in even if I never post on a specific read time... but I can handle it.

Wow, I got one headline in the THOTW list. Thanks, I was really trying to catch up this week after being on travel for so long in New England, working my ass off.

Stanfan114: frickinyeahyeahyeah: Just got here - has anyone explained what an interstitial ad is yet?

Banner ads between posts.

That's what I thought at first too, but after a little googling, this is actually that "and now a word from our sponsor" advertising where you have to click THROUGH a full page ad before you get to your content. As someone posted above Wikia and IGN do this. It is the only form of advertising more annoying than talking banner adds that cover content.

I actually somewhat doubt 99% of Fark's visitors have logins though. What's really amusing is in order to complain about it on Fark, you have to create a login, which in turn means you no longer have a reason to biatch.

You know what I'd love? Pop under ads that run Java and play audio! Can we have those too?

Is there a Firefox add-in that zaps interstitial ads?

2010-04-19 05:33:57 PM
Why the huge push to include interstitials? Do people actually click on those? I can't imagine thinking "Hey, I was trying to navigate to a webpage, but this ad appeared instead. I should give these people my money!"

2010-04-19 05:34:49 PM
tillerman35: Is there a Firefox add-in that zaps interstitial ads?

I assume the scripting would be different for every site. I see there are a lot of different Greasemonkey scripts to skip these ads. I'm sure it won't be long before there is a Fark script. I am not worried about it, just stay logged in

FNG: I have adblock disabled for Fark and Totalfark out of respect, and because I'd like to see this place keep going for another 10 years.

Ditto, and I have similar at Slashdot; it gives me the option to disable the ads.

I don't have issues with this 'cause I don't mind some sucker paying Drew for ads I'll never click, and Drew's being upfront about it.

Shooting straight with your users keeps 'em comin' back.

2010-04-19 05:40:16 PM
How about if we make every comment a 'slide' So you have to click 'next' to read each comment. Every page has lots of ads, then every 3rd click presents and interstitial! Wahoo!

2010-04-19 05:43:01 PM
It sucks, and it'll damage Fark, but Drew has the right to damage Fark a little, especially if the money is used to make Fark better.

Still sucks, though. I do appreciate that logged in users will not see the interstitial. It saves me the trouble of scripting my way around it. No more browsing Fark on my phone or any public PCs, though.

BigNumber12: Why the huge push to include interstitials? Do people actually click on those? I can't imagine thinking "Hey, I was trying to navigate to a webpage, but this ad appeared instead. I should give these people my money!"

Advertisers think its a sure fire way to make sure their ads are out there and presented to users. It's also easy to account for, unlike standard page views ("Hey, they're seeing our shiat!" instead of "Hey, maybe they're seeing our shiat!").

Unfortunately, this analysis was done by some fresh MBA with a dimwitted focus group, who probably did not know what a pop-up blocker was, and therefore said MBA did not think his/her cunning plan all the way through.

Will the ad thing be on the mobile version, too?

2010-04-19 05:56:49 PM
I only log in to post comments or browse TFD, so it looks like I'll be paying $5/month to get annoying advertisements instead of the page I clicked.

Well, I would have been paying $5/month. Now I'll just find a news aggregator that doesn't kick it's users in their collective balls.

I couldn't help myself. But as someone who occasionally logs in and rarely posts, I may end up finding this annoying OR it may influence me to log in more often..which could have been the point all along...but will it make me stop visiting altogether?

That's what I was wondering too. Do people actually buy products advertised in this annoying way?

Well, can you fix it so that I really stay all the way logged in?

Fark's login has always been kinda half-ass there. Even though I might login at the top, it asks me for my login and password everywhere I turn. Like this comment (and yeah, the browser's filling it in, but not at the login at the top). I never understand why it's that way.

2010-04-19 06:07:15 PM
Well, FARK has been my homepage for several years now (almost a decade I think). The first interstitial I see I am resetting my home page. I clear my cookies and don't store passwords. I am not opening my browser every morning to see an ad. So sorry it had to come to this, but now I am off to think about what will be my homepage for the next decade.

I don't have this problem. Honestly. It stays logged in for me everywhere for months at a time (until I delete my cookies). It's gotta be something you're doing.
