I agree, a foul ball is open game at the ballpark. However, Diving on top of a little kid to get it and then sit there like this guy did with out so much as a pat on the kids head to say sorry was about as low as one person can sink. with exception of his coont of a wife who sat there and rubbed his knee like he was some sort of hero instead of biatchslappin his sorry mug and walking out. One can only hope that some day they are at the game with their own kid/s and have some brute fall all over them for a foul ball. I wouldnt recommend they go to any games in the near future though, My guess is that the tickets he has offered to purchase for the kid and his family are actually tickets he had already purchased and is now deathly afraid to use them.

"But if it were my kid, and some asshat ran into him then took the same attitude, he would of received a serious beating"

Sorry, but I'm calling bullshiat on all of you people who claim you'd give the guy a "beating". I assume most of you know that
it wouldn't be a reasonable reaction to the situation.

-------

I'll also add more fuel to the fire. All of you who think the guy's getting what he deserved need to take a couple steps back. Ok, the guy shoulda done something differently, but he doesn't deserve all of the abuse and negative shiat
that is either happening or going to happen to him. It's just a foul ball for fark's sake.

Having been a jerk for my entire life and having had some amazingly patient girlfriends (who all eventually, and I can't say I blame them, gave up on dealing with it), she was probably patting him on the knee nicely and asking him to either apologize or give the kid the ball. It was probably HER who insisted on being taken home because she was so embarrassed and then HER who has given him so much shiat the past few days that he'll do anything to get her off his case about it.

What this man, Matt Starr, did is indefensible. Whatever the child's mother did after the fact does not mitigate his stupid behavior.

I wonder what's going on in the minds of those defending him?

farkdog

He's an asshat because after doing something moronic in the heat of the moment that *could* have hurt a little kid, he showed absolutely no sign of remorse, embarassment or relief that the kid was okay. And even if he didn't feel any of those things, any non-asshat would at least be wise enough to make a token gesture to the upset mother by giving the ball to the kid.

I wonder if he would have given up the ball if it had bounced off the kid's head first.

Methinks his landscape business is going down the tubes.

2004-06-17 12:46:49 PM
D_Moran I wonder what's going on in the minds of those defending him?

They're probably just realizing that he's a pretty average baseball fan trying to get a ball.. fell over the chair, and was excited about it. Noticed the kid wasn't hurt, so didn't care.

But that's just a hunch.

2004-06-17 12:53:26 PM
Lets go after the guy in the red shirt for not helping the kid get out of the way next! Get the news crew!

2004-06-17 12:55:13 PM
jjp221 Yes, at any sporting event balls, bats, etc. are all up for grabs. But knocking over a kid to get to them is like the Seinfield episode when George runs over 3 little kids and an old lady to escape the "fire". Funny but very, very sad.

Not really a fair analogy. More like hearing your fire alarm in your apartment go off, running outside.. and then realizing there were kids still trapped in the some unit in the building.

Intentionally trying to leave people behind to burn to death and bumping into a kid are not really the same, but I guess that it's really not as obvious to some people as it should be.

Tools of the media I guess.

Numsay Lets go after the guy in the red shirt for not helping the kid get out of the way next! Get the news crew!

And the mom for putting her kid in harms way to begin with. Someone should call child protection services.

2004-06-17 01:03:38 PM
OK, so the kid got a lot of free stuff for getting "jostled" a little. Sure he doesn't deserve anything that he got but can we please stop calling this kid things like "punk" "little bastard" "and little shiat?" I mean he was there because his parents thought he might enjoy seeing a game. Personally I would have been pretty pissed if someone did that to my kid but I'm a little over-protective. If you'll notice on the video, he was rubbing his arm a little after he got pushed against the seats again, I would have called the cops and made a report against the guy for assault. And yes, it is assault, I'm a cop. But please stop railing on this kid because it's not like he's asking for all this stuff.

2004-06-17 01:09:34 PM
And "poopmasterflex" gimme a break. Taking your kid to a ballgame doesn't quite qualify as putting him in harm's way. It's also Child Protective Services.

"I said, 'You trampled a 4-year-old boy to get this ball,' and he said, 'Oh, well,'" she told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, adding that the man seemed proud he got the ball.

Let me add another resounding "Who cares" to the chorus of people who don't care about this little incident. I'm so glad I don't watch shows like Good Morning America. Whine, whine, whine, boo-hoo, fake sympathy, cut to commercial.

Wow. Farkdog, you have no idea. If someone pushed my kid over trying to grab a stupid ball, I'd likely be all over him before I remembered I should have a "reasonable reaction".

Call it Genetic or Biological, but from the minute your kids are born, your brain becomes hardwired to "Protect at all costs".

2004-06-17 01:22:52 PM
I know that when I used to go to baseball games, I wanted to catch a foul ball. It was pretty exciting when one came in the direction I was sitting. If it came near, I wasn't thinking about anything else but that ball.

I am not alone in that behavior. A lot of people behave the same, from what I've seen. I see this guy getting a raw deal because you can go your whole life without getting that moment. It was probably one of the greatest moments of his life. When most people get that moment, the audience cheers them. This guy finally got his moment and he looks like a jerk. No wonder the guy was so pissed! No wonder the guy acted like an ass!

He took a shot, went for glory and got the ball. He looked bad doing it, and was probably embarrassed right away. But to have all those people start treating you like shiat when it should have been a great and fondly remembered moment for the guy, I bet you would have gotten pissed off too. I bet you might have been a little asenine about it. And the guy was right to do what he did right up until he decided to give the kid the ball.

All those of you who think this guy was the ass for keeping the ball and trying to stay normal rather than making a spectacle whore out of himself on national TV like the other family really need to take a step back and look at what you're teaching the next generation.

2004-06-17 01:24:53 PM
I agree that what this guy did in trying to catch the ball happens all the time . . . it's what he did afterward that pissed people off. He could have patted the kid on the head, handed him the ball, kissed the mom on the lips and taken a bow for the crowd.

I've got a link at my site to the video as well, just in case. BadJocks.com

2004-06-17 01:28:22 PM
And the real problem here is all the reports I keep hearing about how the kid was "assaulted" or "bowled over". The kid was BUMPED! This wasn't "horrific". The kid wasn't "almost beheaded". This was an unfortunate mishap!

Must not be a lot going on.

But yeah, this guy is an asshole. I've seen him at games before too, he sits near the section I usually sit in for free.

I think the kid, mother should tell him to go fark himself,he got a signed nolan ball for crying out loud.let the jerk keep the ball to remind him of his total, unbridled rude behavior.

Despite what the crowd was chanting, the outrage was not really over the fact that he kept the ball. The outrage wasn't even that in his eagerness to catch it, he knocked a four-year-old out of his seat. It was that he was totally and completely unapologetic about it. I'd argue that he wouldn't have even had to have given him the ball. Just at least be sorry for jumping over people and scaring a kid. Starr's "fark you" attitude only fueled the fire. He was being every much the "spectacle whore" you claim he would have been if he had done the decent thing and shown just an ounce of contrition. He seemed to revel in his infamy until his wife left the stadium in shame.

If you think being compassionate towards others and apologetic when you make a mistake is being a whore, that tells me far more about you than I care to know.

\knows that people on Fark like to play Devil's Advocate, but finds all the Matt Starr apologists a very depressing statement of the human race.

If this was the greatest moment of this guy's life, I feel very bad for him. However, it still doesn't give him the right to knock over a child and pretend that that is acceptable behavior.

I would teach the next generation this

1) regardless of how exciting the game is, DON'T KNOCK OVER 4 YEAR OLDS.

2) If you accidentally break rule #1, APOLOGIZE PROFUSELY, and (optional) get over yourself, and maybe offer the kid the ball.

3) If your 4 year old is knocked over, deal with the situation directly, and if you don't like the resolution, don't go to the press. If the press comes to you, decline to discuss the matter. Being on TV shouldn't be more important than your dignity or ethics.

2004-06-17 01:55:10 PM
What a pussy, he should never have caved in. If he apologized right away, it's one thing.

/You know the family will sell it on ebay anyways.

The guy is a pure allout jerk. I hate his stinking guts, and hate any of y'all who don't agree!

MinnesotaJack

The guy did reach between the womans legs to get the ball in front of her son. That's pretty offensive. If the man was mentally retarded or something, I think people would understand. But he was just rude. Larger+Rude = Bully.

Sad aspect of this is, the guy has even apologized yet there are some people still making excuses for his behavior.

Their pathetic defense has been along the lines of "he shouldn't have to give the ball away. He got it fair and square. Kid wasn't hurt. Kid wasn't even going for the ball in the first place. blah blah blah. I'm an asshat and proud of it."

They miss the point. It was not really about the ball. It was about an unapologetic asshat. Unapologetic asshats piss people off. Well, the decent people anyway. Those who think that all this was about was a tug-of-war between a ball are being disturbingly myopic.

I live in Dallas, and this story needs to get off the front page of my goddamn newspaper. I am going to beat down every reporter who won't shut the fark up about this. We need another missing basketball player to give them something to do.

2004-06-17 02:00:39 PM
Thanks for the video badjocks. I agree that the guy behaved rudely afterward, but I have to wonder how much of that was due to the fact that the boy's mother was beating this fellow with her game program/scorecard. Notice as he is trying to retract from her biatch slaps, he bumps the kid again, accidentally. Hey lady accidents happen. I think this fellow may have reason to file assault charges against the mother.

Also, what kind of farking mother sits with a small child in the foul ball zone with no protective netting. I have seen many a ball zip into the stands and take out a spectator or two. If she is all about injury to the child, then she should not have been sitting there in the first place.

2004-06-17 02:06:33 PM
All I see in the video is a guy doing what dozens of people do every day in major league parks all around the country.

You do? You see people diving over rows of seats and rummaging around between strangers' legs? Where the hell do you live? Remind me not to go to any ball games there.

I've been to in excess of 300 Minnesota Twins games in my life, and have not once seen any thing like this. In actuallity, people generally apologize for spilling someone else's drink, dropping some popcorn on their heads while cheering, etc. This guy damn near sexually molested that woman while kicking her kid in the back, and instead of apologizing, celebrated it! Whether he meant to stick his head in her crotch or not, the fact that he wouldn't even say "Sorry 'bout that" makes this guy a first-class asshole.

Period.

2004-06-17 02:07:08 PM
Screw the brat! foul balls are fair game...first to get to the ball gets the ball plain and simple!

/proud NON-breeder(as so many others should be..there are too many farking kids in this world already!)

2004-06-17 02:07:15 PM
So the guy does the right thing, after the fact. Can't say I blame him for hiding and waiting though, considering that the goddamn media has had nothing better to do than hound him and harass him over this non-event.

I wonder if the asshat Mom has her book deal inked yet.

2004-06-17 02:08:59 PM
"Wow. Farkdog, you have no idea. If someone pushed my kid over trying to grab a stupid ball, I'd likely be all over him before I remembered I should have a "reasonable reaction"."

And if you "beat the guy up", you'd be an asshat (and you'd deserve the jail time you'd get). If it were me, there would be words exchanged, but I'd know that it would be far worse for my kid to see me get into a fight than getting knocked over by someone.

And while we're on the subject of "getting knocked over", I really wish people who stop positioning this as the guy
knocked the kid over. That didn't happen. For fark's sake, stick with the facts.

2004-06-17 02:10:42 PM
Bah, how stupid. Thanks for the vid link as I hadn't seen this before until this morning on cable news.

1. Guy barely touched the kid and the kid was farkin clueless about the whole thing. 1b. Dad, why were you not in this punks face about it?

2. Guy is an asshat for not giving the kid the ball afterwards. I know its a cool thing to get a foul ball but sheesh, grow up buddy. You dove over seats of a 4 yr old kid for pete's sake. Must've been a bad hair day or his wife had denied him "carnal pleasure" the night before.

3. Fark you attention whore mommy. Good Farking Morning America? Jeebus H. Christmas. Though, I'm guessing the fact that the cameras caught the whole thing is what spurred it on. 15 minutes of fame etc..
4. Would the media please just STFU about it. Stop ruining this guy's life with national friggin coverage. Its like the whole bartman thing. Lazy arse loser cubs.. waa..waa.. we played like shiat so lets blame it on an very unlikely catcheable ball.

as a youth minister...he should have had "goodness in his heart" to begin with....just goes to church for show and tell to his family/friends.....still an ass hat to late loser....."here is your 15 minutes of fame"
glad its not mine BTW now you wife and the rest of the world know what a farking asshat you are

2004-06-17 02:16:00 PM
This guy damn near sexually molested that woman

I'd say that's a BIT of a stretch, pal

while kicking her kid in the back, and instead of apologizing, celebrated it! Whether he meant to stick his head in her crotch or not, the fact that he wouldn't even say "Sorry 'bout that" makes this guy a first-class asshole.

This is where I point out how you either (1) know little to nothing about the actual facts of this event, or (2) choose to ignore the facts because it makes for a more dramatic argument.

The guy DID apologize immediately afterwards. Unfortunately, his apology went ignored by this asshat soccer mom, who was too busy cussing him out and beating him with her game program. Now, granted this guy is probably a stubborn S.O.B., even I would have told that Stepford Wife to fark off if she reacted like a lunatic when I first tried to apologize.

Besides, even if the guy was just a plain ol' jerk who hated little kids, this is still a NON-EVENT that doesn't deserve a week of coverage by the national news media. For fark's sake, there are more important things going on in the world, and kids in the cancer ward or burn unit are a hell of a lot more deserving of free baseball memorabilia than some 4-year kid with a biatch for a mother.

2004-06-17 02:17:56 PM
Wow, just paused the video.

The mother must have one saggy crotch. Looks like the guy's face is at her knees. Besides, who would feel that old bag up for a baseball, even a Barry Bonds HR.

2004-06-17 02:27:55 PM
And just where was Mr. Dick Cheney during all this? Probably in some Undisclosed Location having a highball, and a $22 haircut. Just when the Foul Ball Terrasts attack. I smell a conspiracy, good people, a fine con-Spriacy.

Watch the video. There was no attempt on said a-hole's part to apologize or even acknowledge the lady's existence. He was on his feet and back over the row of chairs as fast he could move. He tried to apologize? How, by hiding behind his wife? This video has been unavoidable on TV for the last couple of days...how did you manage to not see it?

2004-06-17 02:34:40 PM
"He did this on his own..."

No he didn't. It took two days of harrassing by millions of people. Not exactly doing it on your own.

MisterSquishy

Wondered how long it would take for someone to blame the team itself...

...and it must suck to be those thousands of "rude" Texas fans chanting for the guy to give the kid the ball. The only one who should still be getting attention is Rangers announcer Tom Grieve, for having the balls to say what he said (and very nearly said) about the guy on the air. Most commentators would have probably laughed at the poor kid and moved on.

Kid deserved the stuff he got, I wouldn't accept the baseball from the guy, end of story. Next article. Now go cover Kobe getting over his disappointment by having lots of sex. Maybe even telling his wife about it someday.
