First international win for greece ever I think.

2004-06-12 02:16:27 PM
some shots on net would help

2004-06-12 02:19:24 PM
They thoroughly deserved it. Portugal were weak attacking and the Greeks were mighty in defence. Curse of being host nation strikes again.

Tomorrow, France surrenders.

Hopefully.

2004-06-12 02:20:38 PM
Just like they should not have lost to the USA in the last World Cup. Portugal is the most underachieving team in world soccer.

This shocked me a lot more than the Pistons taking two of the first three from the Lakers, I must say.

2004-06-12 02:23:09 PM
I thought it was a pretty dull game to be honest. Looking forward to England Vs France tomorrow though! :)

DISASTRIO!!!

2004-06-12 02:25:56 PM
It is not that surprising considering Portugal are far too dependant on Figo, and Greece have got George Clooney in goal, which gave them that wee edge.

2004-06-12 02:27:17 PM
My money's on France. They were crap during the last World Cup but they should bounce back and win it.

"First international win for greece ever I think."

First win at an international tournament anyway. Greece deserved the win, Portugal were very poor in the first half. It's probably time to pension off the "golden generation" (including Figo).

2004-06-12 02:28:49 PM
Greece were pretty good weren't they. I love the biug football championships, they're always so entertaining watching it all unfold. Even matches like that, I have no particular support for ewither team, just really enjoying seeing it all happen.

2004-06-12 02:30:01 PM
Stupid Greece, they played a good game. But I hope they don't win any more games. I hate watching defensive teams play, no entertainment value in it.

2004-06-12 02:30:40 PM
is this tournament on tv anywhere in the states?

2004-06-12 02:31:39 PM
England or the Dutch. I hope its the Dutch cause they have cool names like Yap Stamm or Clarence Seedorf and Edgar Davids. Imagine how much ribbing in school you would have gotten if your name was Clarence Yap or Edgar.

2-1 flattered the Portuguese. Greece were all over them. I would love it if the hosts went out at the first stage.

London_Scot - my thoughts exactly!

C'mon England!

2004-06-12 02:35:42 PM
Well, Greece my grits.

Actually, my Grecian girlfriend Thought this was the bees knees.

What I think of when I think of Greece:

Like the animation SpamRaider i especially like the labels on wales and scoland.

Wales really is just sheep and dirt. But they were robbed in not getting to this tournament. Hopefully Spain will thrash Russia now.

Great minds. I just posted on my blog that they 'have a goalkeeper who looks like George Clooney's evil twin playing a psychopath who eats peoples' faces'. I stand by that.

A case of Greece overcoming Grease as far as Figo's concerned, I think.

...Heraclitus a little flick, here he comes on the far post, Socrates is there, Socrates heads it in! Socrates has scored! The Greeks are going mad, the Greeks are going mad. Socrates scores, got a beautiful cross from Archimedes. The Germans are disputing it. Hegel is arguing that the reality is merely an a priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics, Kant via the categorical imperative is holding that ontologically it exists only in the imagination, and Marx is claiming it was offside. But Confucius has answered them with the final whistle! It's all over! Germany, having trounced England's famous midfield trio of Bentham, Locke and Hobbes in the semi-final, have been beaten by the odd goal, and let's see it again...

it's like a perfect clone! oh well, time for the Spain game now! Who you all fancying? I think Russia can pull it off....

Does this mean that the Greece team gets to pile into the minivan of Arturo's Mom and get treated to ice cream?

2004-06-12 02:48:12 PM
Good for them.

I'm still predicting that Portugal gets out of the group and Greece doesn't.

/france v holland in the finals

Spain never perform on the big stage. They'll get to the quarters, but no further.

ugotamesij has spoken.

No way guys, Italy won't lose it again this time.

I am waiting for new young stars to come out of this competition.

Portugal sucks, they let Karagounis score, he plays for Inter!
Anyway Greece has come a long way, look at their roster, many play in the top european leagues.

England-France is bound to entertain, I hope it becomes a real battle real soon otherwise France will win easily.

It's only on InDemand PPV. Each match on my cable system is $19.99, which is way too rich for my blood! Gone are the days when you'd see coverage on ESPN and ESPN2, or Fox Sports Net even!

And you can't even listen to the audio for free anymore! It's $39.99 for the entire tournament!

Money has ruined sports!

2004-06-12 02:59:03 PM
Coverage of every game on TSN (basic cable) in Canada. Mainly because a whole lot of people here are immigrants from one of the countries that cares about soccer

2004-06-12 02:59:53 PM
jasonbondshow I have checked with local sports bars, and they charge $20 a person, so if you have a friend, PPV is 50% off!

this tournament is going to be fun, also I will watch the Olympics, Iraq has it's own men's soccer team.

This shocked me a lot more than the Pistons taking two of the first three from the Lakers, I must say.

Well, unlike Detroit, I don't think Lisbon's gonna be set on fire over it.

Me? I'm behind the Dutch.

2004-06-12 03:03:51 PM
Wow. There's a shock. At least Cristiano scored for Portugal (woot United!!!)

/getting the France - England game tomorrow..go England!

very true...

Do you think I should remove my Scotland flag from my car, I feel a wee bit worried that every car around me has England flags on them..

Here's the real shock. This made the main board. It's a pleasant shock, though.

It's a sporting even bigger and more important than any based in America, I fail to see the problem in it making the main page.

You mean Jaap Stam? Try Boudewijn Zenden and Pierre van Hooijdonk on for size, man. Great names. Same with Rafael van der Vaart.

If you want to listen, I'm pretty sure that BBC Radio 5 Live is webcasting their coverage. Certainly looks that way right now ...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport# and then go for the Radio5 link on the right...

Ah, the excuses....

"We didn't deserve to lose - Greece had two chances and scored both times "

I've always liked watching Columbia play.

Thats a gross ethnic slur; English people do not *always* talk about 1966. They only talk about it when topics such as football, Germany, winning, losing, grass, air, cups or Bobby Moore come up.

On the subject of which....

p.s. - it really irritates me too...

2004-06-12 03:18:35 PM
Usually I hate everything about England, but this is pretty amusing...

I love that quote in the article about Greece having 2 chances to score in the whole game.

That is what makes soccer hard to watch. People always say it's the low scoring, but it's the low number of legit scoring chances.

You can watch for 20 minutes without seeing somebody come close to a goal.

I've always liked watching Columbia play.

I've always liked hearing about the aftermath of Clumbia losing, especially when a defender scores an own goal :-)

Russia are coming more and more into this, but I have to say I still fancy Spain. Its nice to see a team playing two proper wingers who can go past a man.

And keep flying your flag, just don't be an England hater, that's all!

And to the victor goes the obligatory revealing of chest hairs?

/hoping Greece doesn't win again
/how are the Slovenes doing, by the by?

On the subject of Dutch names...
Edwin van der Sar, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Roy Makaay (Scottish?), and from the past Berry Van Aerle, Adrie Van Tiggelen, Johnny Van't Schip, Hank Fraser.

You couldn't make them up really!

France surrenders, man that never gets old does it? Same crap they were spouting before the 6 Nations Tournament and we know how that turned out.
