Contrary to what Jimmy the Greek thinks, this isn't because they were bred to be good slave workers

Odd. Whoopi Goldberg said the same thing.

As my name implies, I play water polo. The only dark-skinned opponents I ever face are dark Latin Americans and eastern Mediterraneans. Conversely, though I love to play basketball and in my younger years was pretty good, I do suffer severely from white man's disease.

She's wrong too, then. Just because she's black doesn't make her an expert on the subject. Take Bonzo_1116's advice and read the book referenced above.

Back when I was in junior high and high schools, a friend of mine and I made the observation (which never failed at the time) that blacks kicked ass at the 40-meter and similar events, but it was always a white that took the Boston Marathon or the like.

Wished we could bet on horses that way.

"When I played, you had me and Kevin [McHale] and some others throughout the league," Bird said during a televised, cross-generational chat that included Magic Johnson, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. "I think it's good for a fan base because, as we all know, the majority of the fans are white America. And if you just had a couple of white guys in there, you might get them a little excited.

The problem is that Larry Bird is right. If there was an American-born white superstar in the NBA, white people would be all over him. Its about time white America got past pathetic attitude. If you cant get excited about amazing players like Tracy MacGrady, Kevin Garnett, Shaq, or Tim Duncan, then you have a problem. The same goes for black America and great players like Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki.

There's an unofficial divide between the races and its about time it ends. Whites who listen to hip-hop are called "wiggers" (which I'll never understand why it's not considered a racially inappropriate term) and blacks who watch hockey are called "sellouts." The idea that there's a certain way to act if you were born into a particular race is ridiculous.

Who cares? Basketball sucks. The NFL draft got higher ratings than the NBA finals for a reason.

BTW, my hoops hero's were the Blazers during the Clyde the Glide year. Buck, Jerome, Duckworth, Terry Porter and Clyde. Honorable, outstanding gentlemen who did the city proud. I wanted to play hoops to be just like Buck.

Then came the weed and attitude and the tats and everything else that my suburban butt never saw before, and I quit following the NBA. I can't relate to multimillion freeloaders on weed who only play hard when it suits them.
If your market is one group, making a product that offends them that means your sales go down. Larry is talking about basic marketing.
Here is what killed the NBA for me:
CTC.

CTC = one less NBA fan. Congratulations David Stern, you've got a league full of wonderous atheletes that no one with disposable income can stand or relate to. Good luck with that.

Why are black people better athletes?

And why will some dumbass call me a racist for saying this?

Not a racist statement, although perhaps a bit broad. For certain sports, folks of African descent seem to do better. I don't say this as a PC term, I'm thinking of the fact that Africans (especially Kenyans) have been kicking ass in marathons and such for quite a long time.

There ARE differences in the "races". Europeans tend towards tall and a medium build, asians are smaller and a bit stocky, africans tend toward being tall and skinny. These differences are mostly a reaction to environment; When the continent you live on averages 90 degrees, being tall and skinny is a good thing for heat dissipation. When living in northern europe, not so much...

As for why most NBA players are black, I'd suggest that rather than a physiological reason, it has to do with environment. Basketball is well suited to lower income areas (once you have a court, it's a cheap game to play), and in many urban areas, these areas are populated largely by minorities. So, a game common in areas with a large black population produce lots of black athetes that are good at it. No big surprise there.

If tennis was big in Inglewood (it's not, I drive thru there every day), we'd likely have lots of black tennis champs.

First off if you are white and dont watch basketball because there are not enough white star players, you are a racist. Sports are one of the last true activities in life where your skin color dose not matter, skill and talent do. People need to stop being farking stupid.

In my opinion, it should mean Cut The Cord. Of course, that's coming from a slow white guy who has to think for a living, rather than play a game. The life of an NBA star has got to be rough. Really, it must.

The Kenyans better watch their backs--I heard that the Taramahuara[sp?] indios from northern Mexico are starting to enter in long distance races. They should give the Kenyans a run for their money, literally.

I can't wait until we see Kenyans in the Tour De France. That would be cool.

Actually, I have never run into any Kenyans.

PS -- "or the like". Those words were in there for a reason. We're talking 20 years ago or so, and a small pool of samples (So, unless they held 14 Boston Marathons during my six years of secondary education....) It coulda been some other lengthy races, or maybe just restricted to Olympic events. Dunno, just sayin' what I recall.

But keep fishing. You'll catch something sooner or later.

Larry's comment about people identifying with atheletes is right on but race isn't the only thing people identify with. I love watching college ball because I'm a student and can identify with other students regardless of their color.

What turns people off of the NBA is the complete lack of teamwork and the rich players with horrible attitudes that get all the press. I mean can you imagine a college player biatching about playing time like AI did earlier in the year? They'd be benched for the rest of the year.

But look at even the old "traditionally" white sports and look what's happening:

Golf (tiger)
Tennis (Williams Sisters)
Soccer (Thierry Henry, among many others)
Hockey (Jerome Iginla)

It's amazing how clearly superior the black athlete is to the white athlete (and you're correct - that's a way-too-broad generalization, but you know what I'm saying).

I think it's fascinating. And I think it's equally fascinating that it's taboo, in polite society (i.e., not Fark), to say something we all know to be true.

I don't watch the NBA as much anymore because the games are not as good as they use to be.
Its not as much a team sport anymore, its more about individual match ups.
One guy holds the ball and all his team mates clear out, a bad missed shot follows and then they go down the other end and do it all over.
Then all the holding and grabing on defense, it makes for ugly basketball.
On top of that David Stern/the NBA spend all there time selling the game to the young hip hop fans. Thats fine, but its a pretty small market to gear your product to.
Its just matter of time before MTV is the home of the NBA finals.

Their muscles fibers are genetically different than that of white people. It causes them to have denser muscle mass that is better suited to quick, explosive movement.

says "A report in the Chicago Tribune, however, said that of the 408 players in the NBA last season, 76.5 were black. "

I wonder who the 0.5 of a black man is.
Is he 3.5 feet tall?

2004-06-10 07:46:43 PM
I can see what Bird was trying to say, having more players like him that white guys can identify with. While I think it's sad that people need someone of their race to identify with, I can see his point. For years I've rooted for the John Stocktons, Ed McCafferys and Anson Carters of the sporting world. What they have in common is being a minority in the position or sport they play(ed). To deny that they stand out partly because of their race would be lying. But at the end of the day, they are judged for their skill and accomplishments, not what color skin they were born with.

Most Brazilians are at least partly west african---They didn't stop the slave trade until some time in the 1800's. This goes for Pele, too.

PS--Soccer is a world sport, all racial groups play it, so it isn't really a "white game" anymore.

2004-06-10 07:50:53 PM
Strongest legs: West Africans

Strongest Upperbody: Nordic peoples

Best Long distance runners: South-Eastern Africans

Best body for greco-roman wrestling: Eastern Europeans

The above statements are supported by studies of international competitions over a hundred years. Different ethnic groups look different, obviously, and have different muscle structures due to environmental differences.

There are some generalizations that can be made of groups of people. There are legitimate reasons that certain ethnic groups do better at certain things.

For example, Inuits are short, stocky people. This is because of the cold environment they live in. Also, the blood flow to their hands and feet is much, much better than that of other ethnic backgrounds. This fends of frostbite. Physically, the different races have differences.

However, because life is just as challenging to the mind no matter what the physical environment, average IQ is pretty much the same across the globe.

Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird sparked controversy Thursday after he commented in an interview that the NBA could use more white superstars.

Oh good lord. Talk about trying to make something out of nothing. I saw the segment when it ran. It was nothing. I'm (part) black, and there was nothing here for blacks or anyone else to get worked-up about. End of story.

I can't decide which is worse: this country's preoccupation with race or its preoccupation with sex. It's a photo finish.

How typical.... a white man makes an innocent comment concerning the dominance of black men in profession basketball and the general lack of white superstars and it is controversial... racist... and ignorance.

The people that get offended by statements like these want to be the 'victim' so they have an excuse for their own prejudices.
