Ugh. Spelling.

2004-06-08 02:39:28 PM
I bet it was taking too damn long, too.

Toooooooooooo damn long, I say.

2004-06-08 02:44:09 PM
If he really knew how to play he obviously wasn't a real punk.

Guess he'll be playing for the Dead Kennedys now.

"During the '80s, he recorded and toured frequently with Lou Reed and played on saxophonist/composer John Zorn's best-known albums."

Cue Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" from Trainspotting.

Before anyone else says so, the headline is gramatically incorrect; it should be, "Punk guitarist dies off heroin overdose at 61... because old age was taking to damn long". Much better.

2004-06-08 02:46:38 PM
you got the spelling correct

My thoughts, exactly.

*Stop playing that, Bob. It sounds too.. worked out!

Speaking of him, has anyone figured out why Lydia Lunch is semi-famous? Over the years, I have seen movies, heard albums and read interviews and she has never said one thing that even remotely made me understand why people know her name.

2004-06-08 02:48:27 PM
I appreciated his work with Lou Reed, Tom Waits and Matthew Sweet. Quine played on some of my favourite albums. Sorry to see him go.

2004-06-08 02:48:54 PM
Wow, I've never heard of this guy, and I've been into punk since the early 80's. He must be olde old skool.

Ooooppps I screwed up the spelling... *hands back English Degree*. Apologies to spelling nazis.

Serves him right. He was a punk anyway.

"rain dogs" has some strange and wild licks on it. check it out.

"Robert Quine was a magnificent guitar player -- an original and innovative tyro of the vintage beast," Reed said in a statement released to Billboard.com. "He was an extraordinary mixture of taste, intelligence and rock'n'roll abilities coupled with major technique and a scholar's memory for every decent guitar lick ever played under the musical son.

Looks like poster is not the only one who can't spell

"Quine was smarter than them all.
So smart that he used and abused Heroin and it killed him. Yep. Pretty farkin smart.

"He was a marvelous guitarist:
...and now he is a marvelous lump of dead flesh that will go on to fertilize some really nifty flowers.

It's amazing how this marketing tool of Malcolm McClaren's is still bouncing around in people's heads. Punk was never about 'not knowing how to play', it was more like, 'however good you are, go out and play.' Don't worry if you can't play 'Stairway to Heaven' note for note, just have fun with it. It never meant you had to purposely play like shiat.

Looks like he finally hit rock bottom.

Speaking of him, has anyone figured out why Lydia Lunch is semi-famous? Over the years, I have seen movies, heard albums and read interviews and she has never said one thing that even remotely made me understand why people know her name.

Never heard of her.

2004-06-08 02:59:28 PM
I think Lydia Lunch is just one of those people who know people. I've only ever heard of her via SY's Bad Moon Rising... but I could be wrong.

As someone who is both a professional writer and a multi-poster, OlafTheBent, I can tell you that when you find a good story, you'll have more success going for submission speed over submission accuracy every time. I have the fractured (but greenlighted) headlines to prove it.

2004-06-08 03:02:14 PM
Lydia Lunch is a poet and performer, a singer and a rockin' chick. Plus she's hot. If you needed anything more than that...

explain Avril Lavigne.

Good move, old man. I have a plan to smoke Cocaine when I get too old.

explain Avril Lavigne

Young, cute, well-branded, slickly packaged, and heavily subsidized by Canadian protectionist cultural policies. And now, she's over 18 to boot!

I remeber her from that album too (great record)...

from what I remember hearing, she was more or less a smoozer in the NYC Avante Garde scene during the early to mid-80's. Or maybe I don't know scheiss...

I see that misspelling has become contagious... FARK!

remeber = remember

I get Lydia Lunch mixed around with Lene Lovich, Nina Hagen and Wendy O. Williams. Never really thought about it before, but W.O.W. fronted the Plasmatics, and I know Nina and Lene from that "Don't Kill the Animals" song. So, yeah, what did Lydia ever do?

Not much, apparently. Looks like she rode some coat-tails, mostly.

2004-06-08 03:11:08 PM
So it wasn't the Golden Girls that did him in, it was his Golden Arm?

Just curious...

2004-06-08 03:12:07 PM
In tribute, we should all listen to "Love Comes In Spurts" by Richard Hell and the Voidoids really farking loudly.

And it should read, "...old age was taking to damn long walks in the park".

2004-06-08 03:12:22 PM
Lydia Lunch sang with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and recorded some stuff with Rowland S. Howard of the Birthday Party, amongst her other various endevours.

You are correct, sir!
I get sick of people who brush of 'punk'(whatever THAT means anymore)as crappy music played badly. If you want to hear exciting, complex, intense music check out nomeansno, refused, or NOFX's "The Decline" if you doubt it.

Sure, everybody gets all misty-eyed over Reagan, but when a pure farking genius guitarist like Bob Quine dies, we get a resounding chorus of "Who?"s.

Well, I for one will be listening to The Blue Mask in his honor tonight. Who's with me?

Lydia Lunch is a poet and performer, a singer and a rockin' chick. Plus she's hot. If you needed anything more than that...

I worked at a club where I saw her do a spoken word gig around 15 years ago, and it sucked ass.
"All men are assholes...blah, blah, blah.....etc, etc....", This lasted at least 90 minutes.

As she continues to do in this thread about Robert Quine...

2004-06-08 03:17:39 PM
The submitting poster is a moron. Quine is one of the great guitarists of punk/alternative/whatever the fark you want to call non-mainstream rock music of the past twenty-five years, and deserves more respect. Anyone who played on BLANK GENERATION, THE BLUE MASK and GIRLFRIEND deserves to be seen as something other than a 'punk'.

I've known about this for a few days through a musician's newsgroup I'm part of. Sad thing is, this was most likely a suicide, as Quine's wife died about 10 months ago and he'd been in a serious depression since.

R.I.P.
