Interesting historical tidbit: Hypatia was a female philosopher who was murdered by a mob of fundamentalist Christians who killed her by stripping her naked and flaying her to death with either roof tiles or oyster shells.

Funny who it's supposed to be the sort of thing that conservatives think about, but liberals actually do.

See: Antifa, post-election rioting, inaugural disruptions, Scalise assassination attempt, attack on Rand Paul, and the return of "assassination chic" among the far left.

None of that sort of thing happened when Obama was elected.  The worse thing that happened was TEA Party demonstrations, notorious for leaving the areas where they demonstrated cleaner than they found them

Instead, the GOP performs mass murder of innocents by restricting the access to healthcare, and violates everyone's civil liberties in promoting inequality before the law.

The scale of "problem" is different not in degree but in orders of magnitude.  Comparing what Obama was doing to the "TEA party" astroturf movement and what Trump is doing to the rule of law only shows how demented you are.

Not to mention the attack on Rand Paul was a personal beef between neighbors, not an act of political violence.

I hate to tell you, but every element that composes the sun, the moon and the Earth is older than any of those objects.

ah, not quite. Helium in the sun is always being newly created

Any elements from atomic number 26 (iron) on upwards in number of protons is older than the sun, since you can only get those elements from novae and supernovae.

Also, unrelated to phalamir's post... does anyone remember the pre-Trump days when a certain farker had something to contribute on guns and SIGINT and could occasionally manage to provide actual, factual information without being a partisan liar a'la Trump? Yet another reason to miss the Obama era.

You might want to go read Dmitri's handy chart to see how many protons helium has.  Hint: look for He.

Could it be possible that this meteorite was an interestellar object that just happened to hit Earth. Seems like a simpler explanation as to why it doesn't fit our pre-solar system models, especially since I assume that most other meteorites that strike the earth do fit the model. I just feel we should be finding more examples of stones like this one if it is actually a remanant of the dust cloud that formed the beginning of the solar system.

The Earth went through a few complete melting periods after it was formed and into the era when we were getting pounded heavily by asteroids.  Virtually anything before 3.5BYA was melted into random rock and is simply part of the Earth's constituent mass.  Since then, the stabilizing of the Solar System, and the Moon acting as an ablative shield, has greatly reduced the number of strikes on the Earth.  Most bits in the Solar System have achieved relatively stable orbits.  And the stuff that hasn't has decreased immensely from the initial Death Pinball Stage.  Also, the Earth is, cosmologically speaking, really farking small.  Rando rock hurtling through space slamming into us without being picked off by the Moon or vaporizing in the atmosphere is an astronomically rare event.  One that was from the early formation of the Solar System and hadn't done so already - and thus was melted long ago - is even rarer.  If you were living in rural Manitoba, you would have a better chance of coming across an identifiable drop of Thai hooker sweat on your roof than one of these rocks hitting the Earth - by several orders of magnitude.

When she doesn't have the blurring, she is quite attractive. Still attractive with the blurring too.

I remember Hypatia. She was a brilliant mathematician, scientist, and scholar, who was torn apart by Christians for her "futuristic" ideas as the article says. Like the idea that a woman should be able to read and write, do complicated mathematics, have opinions on things beyond what's for supper.

Sad story, but it was made into a movie, so she has that. Let's hope that her "futuristic" ideas catch on in more places.

Yes. Like Socrates and Boethius, she is a martyr of philosophy.
