Well duh only creationist think evolution is straightforward because they are simple minded people and giving the choice between a creation story that is complex and can take years of study to properly understand or a creation story that can fit on a single page with clear simple steps that can't be questioned then they choose the later.

The evidence from DNA shows that there was interbreeding between our species and pre-modern humans, including the Neanderthals and the other enigmatic hominin referred to as the Denisovans.

They forgot sub-saharan ghost hominins

I am pretty sure some critter had a cat-like head with a rabbit-like body, and then evolved into a ramothecus. It was pretty straightforward from there.

Oh, I'd LOVE to be a future archeologist finding the mildly irradiated remains of what, after finding a sole scrap of printed text depicting the imminent demise of a civilization, becomes known as 'Donnies Endgame - Planet of the Schizophrenic Shiat-Gibbons'
