I cannot fathom the motive. Score some sweet old wood? Test your gas-powered chainsaw by alcohol-fueled you?

That kind of wanton destruction is common to one's early teens (boys anyway).

You've never been to Alberta.

Also, it's gotten so bad that even America's historical buildings are fleeing

Reclaimed wood like that can go from 5 to 15 bucks a board foot. And reclaimed historic bricks can run a 1.50 a brick.

It's valuable stuff. When a nice chunk of weathered wood can get you 80 to 100 bucks a board its not crazy. Beats stripping copper wire out of construction sites...

I get the whole historic building thing.  I really do.  But don't you think calling a run-down wooden fish pickling shed a "historic building" is a bit of a stretch?  What's next?  Adding Farmer Joe's old outhouse to the national register of historic places?

I was taught at the age of five: if you value it--take care of it.
You didn't take care of it--it floated away.
It's on you, now.

There's a mill in Augusta, GA that until the economy dumped, along 2010 (or so) that did quite well in salvaging and repurposing old lumber. There for a few years, used to swing by and they'd let me scrounge through their scraps for wood working projects.

That reminds me of the neighbors back on the farm. They had a 'two-holer' and the old man got drunk one day, went to the outhouse and put one foot in each of the holes and shiat his pants.

Lots of Ontarians ITT apparently - because I haven't seen such lazy Anti-Maritimer bigotry since I left the Center Of The Universe (Toronto). Not that there isn't some backwoods and/or redneck parts of this region, but it's more Letterkenny than Trailer Park Boys.

Looking at the condition of the remaining buildings, I doubt that nonprofit can afford to disassemble, load, and transport the shed back home. They definitely can't get it put back on the pilings in any safe or usable manner without a major investment. If they do have the cash, better to use that money to make the rest of the smokehouse less crappy.

Honestly kind of surprised it hasn't burned down already, The whole place looks like it's one July 4th away from a massive fire.

My grandfather used to run a picture framing business at home, after he was retired.  It made a little money and gave something to keep him busy.  He had a workshop in the backyard, and a shed to keep wood in.

He was constantly on the lookout for someone who was tearing down an old barn or similar.  That heavily weathered wood was very popular for frames, and obviously you can't just pick it up at the hardware store.

If they wanted to save this building, they should have been doing some upkeep before it floated away.  At this point, even without people breaking it down to component parts, hauling it back and doing repairs would be far more expensive than building a new one.
