Don't brawl with monks if you can't make your save versus quivering palm...

It's only ironic if you've never watched Kung Fu.

Gasan instructed his adherents one day: "Those who speak against killing and who desire to spare the lives of all conscious beings are right. It is good to protect even animals and insects. But what about those persons who kill time, what about those who are destroying wealth, and those who destroy political economy? We should not overlook them. Furthermore, what of the one who preaches without enlightenment? He is killing Buddhism."

Submitter should RTFA: the monks were hurt by politicians attacking them in parliament. It doesn't say the monks were fighting.

2004-06-08 05:34:39 PM
The monks didn't actually fight, they were just beat up. In Buddhism, a truely enlightened one should take the blows, and not fight back.
/not ironic

2004-06-08 05:34:50 PM
were they on fire? because I wouldn't mess with a monk that set himself on fire first.

I'm just sayin'.

Apparently there is a new movement in Buddhism... they are now adding sports for a means of meditation. The art of Cage Fighting has become a big hit among the monks!

That is just wrong.
When politics lead to folks beating down monks, the world is in serious trouble.

WTF is the monk doing in politics in the first place, tho?
That's what I wanna know.

2004-06-08 05:57:11 PM
the Drunken Master surrenders? NO!! the Drunken Master *never* surrenders... RTFA and you'll see that the fracas was justified. it takes a lot ot piss off a buddhist monk.

You can't follow the middle way unless you get into a fight some of the time.

Beats the hell out of me. As far as I know, the Vinaya (monastic disciplinary code) forbids holding that kind of position. Maybe not. Anyway, the Buddha had numerous opportunities to exercise political power, and he chose not to, so I would expect monks to follow his example.

Then again, this story doesn't seem to be talking about your standard monks. :P

read
the
article.

this would only qualify as "ironic" if the monks had started or participated in the fight. this just sounds like they we attacked.

2004-06-08 06:23:05 PM
yeah but the buddha chose not too because of the state of Indian society at the time. buddhism does not strictly prohibit politics as it can serve to benefit mankind

DrFuzzy Buhddist monks are very different from Christian monks. Some sects of Buhddism encourage their monks not to isolate themselves from the world, but to instead interact with it and challenge it. It is not enough to simply sit in the temple and gaze at one's navel hoping for enlightenment, enlightenment must be sought after and all of life must be made a meditation.

Reminds me of when I went to buy a newspaper yesterday. I could hear yelling as I came out of the store and since it's not the best area so I thought there might be some kind of fight....turned out to be a buhddist monk on the payphone having a huge argument.

You're confusing the precepts of Buddhism for regular everyday Buddhists (there are five of them) and the precepts for monks. For example, monks are celibate; Buddha wasn't stupid enough to say that EVERYONE should be celibate.

I'm not sure if monks are allowed to hold elected office; I'd be surprised if they did, but it would depend on the monastic order they belonged to. And Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhism is way out of my area of familiarity.

Based on the little bits I know of buddhism, it sounds like this particular sect of buddhism is rather extreme and un-buddhist-like,because from what the article suggests, it seems their sole agenda in parliament is to prevent their religion from being busted b/c of the Tamil Tigers, who are Hindu.

I think a real buddhist wouldn't care how many people were of one religion or another, because they're free to make their own decision, follow their own karma.

2004-06-09 12:56:32 AM
You know, this is just a slap in the face to all the Buddhists who get into any religious flamewar on Fark and say that Buddhists are the only non-violent religious people in the world. Hah!

/Of a faith with quite possibly one of the most violent histories on Earth, and probably the oldest leader.

2004-06-09 01:10:25 AM
LincolnLogolas: Except for the fact that the Buddhists in this case didn't actually hurt or attack anyone. Nice work.
