Eh, a bunch of extra people get on the field for title games.

Not an NCAA championship game. Subbyand article fail.

As a photographer who would kill for an opportunity like that, this enrages me just about as much as the people who got paid tens of millions of dollars to wreck the economy.

The QB was sacked for a loss on the prior play so I imagine they were thinking about a longer focal length at that point and not everyone was anticipating a bomb on the next snap.  It's not easy to safely set down a 400/2.8 on a monopod and grab a different lens/body combo in the time that a ball is thrown that far and that quickly - that guy at the right edge of the photo was ready.

The fact that it's three women probably didn't help with the internet backlash.

Get your shiat together and get your shot. It's really a bullshiat excuse about the lens/body combo, the payoff for the shot is worth more than the camera,  and it is turf, your shiat will be fine.  Any photog worth anything would be prepared.  These clowns are not apparently,  worth anything.

also,  if this congress of idiots was worried about focal length  (which is incredibly easy to use if you know what the fark you are doing)  they would have had cameras in  their hands. It's so easy to fix this shiat in post, you can even edit focal points with certain cameras now.

Uh, how are you gonna make a wide angle look like a telephoto, or even more ludicrous, a tele into a wide?

I'm not going to pile on these photographers, as they look like students.

But the answer is you have at least two cameras at the ready.  It explained it in the article.  You'd have a telephoto focused on the play downfield, and one hanging off your neck in case of a quick play right in front of you (in this case, the end zone).

I never did sports or news photography when I was in school for it, but I've seen it in action at sporting events.  And even events like parades down here for Mardi Gras.  Photographers have sometimes around three cameras hanging from them.  And they flip quickly between them.  One is already set to focus somewhere in the range of a close-up.

Anyway, these people look like students and they may not have such resources.  So who knows, I'm not going to pile on them not knowing.  But that is how it is done.

They won the college football playoffs. The NCAA doesn't name a champion for the division they are in wich is the FBS. Football Bowl Subdivision. All the rest of the NCAA divisions have a proper championship, FCS, Division II, Division III.

Remember, we all didn't start out as "seasoned" photographers. We were all "rookies" at one point in our careers.

Sure, so it's an editor's fault for putting an inexperienced photographer by the endzone in the biggest college football game of the year. It's also still the photographer's fault for being bad at their job. It's incredibly unlikely they'll get another shot at a shot like that now. Sucks, bro.

I guess I haven't shot a game as big as that, but at games I've been to, you basically get to pick where you are as a photographer.

That said, a shot of the catch is almost never as good/likely to get used as a good shot of the celebration.

A 400/2.8 runs about $11,000; a high frame rate flagship body is about $6000.  Even for a double truck, ain't nobody getting $17K for that shot.

That happens to me all the time when I'm shooting my daughter's travel softball games. I'll get caught up in watching the play rather than focusing on the shot. After it's over I say to myself, that would have been a great pic!
But then again, I ain't getting paid and I get caught up with the emotion of the game as a dad. I'm getting better, though.

And I'm sure a team from the other divisions would be competitive against them?

It was an NCAA championship game. One of several, but was still an NCAA championship game.

Did you see any NCAA logos? A NCAA trophy? No it was not. It was a championship game for the 5 power conferences.held by the 5 power conferences. That's why it's called the College Football Playoffs. Words have meanings, ffs.

Jesus, dude. Run around playing all the word games you want. That game was for the college football national championship, accepted unanimously by all football fans, except for a couple of silly pedants such as yourself.
Words have multiple meanings, which often confuse those with low intelligence.

Could just call it the Power 5 Championship.  Under the current structure those are the only conferences that will get in.

it's not a "word game" there has literally never been an NCAA D-1 FBS whatever champion. there were two national champions of college football as recently as 2003

You know, technically it's not football at all. You mostly use your hands. And football was already in use by the sport we call soccer. So really is there is no football.

Despite all of the ignorant and assholish comments in this thread, I just want to let the amateur womenfolk out there know that I appreciate the content they supply the internet with every single day. I might have a gripe every now and then but really, it is free so keep on keeping on with all of the amateur photographs and videos. Thanks!

P.S. Lower the volume of the music please so I can hear you. Also, please turn the farking TV off. Radios are one thing but your TV kills the mood for me.

Many people on the sidelines for big games ARE amateurs.

/did the FCS Championship game several years ago with my DSLR
//honestly, iPhone video is probably better than you're gonna get from most cameras, too
///would've had my camera ready, though - gotta make up for crappy equipment by always being in the right spot

I used to be a PJ. I shot many, many games from the sidelines. It was a cool thing to do. Then I switched careers, I had completely forgotten how relaxing it was to watch a game from the seats. The sidelines was a long grind that lasted well after the game ended.

About the photo - I pulled off a stunt in front of a class of photojournalism students. They were expecting to photograph one thing but all of sudden they were presented with a few seconds of chaos that obviously had more news value than the original plan. It was amazing how well that assignment correlated with future careers. The three or four photographers who brought back good pictures from that stunt went on to successful newspaper careers, the others didn't. That doesn't bode well for the young ladies in the picture. (As far as getting employed as a photojournalist, which is sort of a curse.)
