If you keep patching a tire in the same places over time, you'll get a lumpy tire. Same with the os.

The coding in software not really streamlined.

Cleaning, tuning, and preventative maintenance help.  But I'm reaching the limit of what I can do with my tablet.  Things a farking dog lately.

I'm sure it's not the non-deletable bloatware.

Ever growing hardware has led to every growing bloat. That's the price you pay with modern machines. If you want efficient code, get one of these.

In my experience, both Windows and Android run better after they're updated.

With Windows, enormously so.

Okay, this is weird.  Just last night I was reading the new edition rules for Paranoia (RPG) and they compared Friend Computer to ... your smartphone: when you first got it, it was lightning-fast and super-powered, but after a year (or several) it's sluggish and temperamental and buggy and filled with crap.

Now multiply that by centuries ...

I can personally vouch for the storage creep. My Apple lappy was grousing about being full, so I went looking to clear some stuff out. It's got a fraction of my iTunes library on it amd the only other large directory should be my Creative Cloud where I keep the last year or so of work.

Try as I might I couldn't account for several gigs of storage.

Turns out for some reason the morons who wrote Apple's Mail app decided to keep an invisible directory containing a copy of every attachment you preview in Mail. To be clear, if you've got it set to always download the attachment, mail already has a directory for those files. This is a different directory hidden in the invisible files that creates another copy of any attachment you decide to preview.

Even better, unlike the visible directory, the program NEVER deletes those files if you delete the e-mails associated with them.

Showed invisibles deleted that shiat and got a massive chunck of hard drive back.

I have a 2012 Asus Google tablet (7-inch) that is only good for Netflix and reading books on Aldiko. It can't If I try to open Facebook on it, it has a brain fart.

I'm fine with Netflix and books for now. That's all that tablet needs to do. I have a newer MacBook for anything else.

Much like the grammatical brain fart I just had in the post above.

16 different trackers on a page paired with autoplay videos definitely don't have anything to do with it, right Gizmodo?

I hope this turns into another thread where old, cranky farkers complain that phones are too expensive and lack a feature for their totally niche use case they somehow think is universal.

"I have a lot of CRT TVs and no spare outlets, so I need an IR blaster and a swappable battery. These new phones are sacrificing all their best features for design. No one needs that. Give me a phone that I can hook on my walker and not worry about it banging around. That's what the people want!"

A couple years ago, my mom called me to complain that her computer was running too slow.

When I opened her browser, this is what I saw.

Speaking of which, how do I delete old updates and backup points from win7? My SSD is creeping up in size and I only have OS on there, and updates.

They don't. When thungs suddenly start chugging along slowly it's usually because of a very specific thing. An updated driver with a problem, lack of storage space, more wifi interference in your apartment building, etc. I really don't believe that a well maintained computer just gets slower and slower as time goes on.

Learn to hate most people instead of all people. It's much more fun to hate while you're getting serviced.
