It's possible the cabbie is telling the truth, but the optics on this are not good given local history.

Once Terpsma got him home, she cuddled with him to get his body temperature up, she said.

Yeah, at the VERY least, the cab driver lets the guy out and IMMEDIATELY radios dispatch to tell them what's up. It gives him some kind of credibility, especially as it would show that he was concerned with the weather. Instead, just dumping him out and driving off doesn't make him look at all worried about the kid's chances of surviving.

Personally, I think the driver is full of shiat. Why would anyone insist on just getting out of the cab in the middle of nowhere?

Well, that time was 100% the shrooms for me, but I was fine because the Walrus directed me to the nearest offramp, leading me directly to the next roflcopter home.

At least I HOPE that was a taxi.

I travelled to Winnipeg in February a few years ago. It was there that I learned the -40 is where the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales meet.

I could have gone a lifetime not knowing that.

bigfatbuddhist: I gotta go with the son on this one.  He told the driver how much he had and the driver agreed to drive him...

What doesn't make sense to me is why he still had the meter running. If you hop into a cab, tell the driver how much you have, he says that it's enough to get you home then you've agreed on a $40 flat rate. He should turn off the meter and drive you to your intended destination.

Unless the kid saw the meter running and it hit $40 so he decided on his own to get out because he thought he might be causing trouble and he'd walk the rest home. Apparently he said, "mom I don't want to bug you" when he eventually called her for a ride, so that might just be how he is.

Yeah, layers are the key. You still don't kick someone out of a cab in the middle of the night when it's that cold, especially if they're just in a hoodie and a hat.

I don't wear much here in Salt Lake(Doesn't get to be -37 very often), even when the temp is down around 0, because you're only cold from the door to the car and vice-versa, so I wouldn't be bundled up, either. I'd have something more substantial than a hoodie, but I wouldn't be dressed like I was going to hang out in Antarctica or anything.

Sounds like cab driver saw an easy way to make a few bucks, never thought he would get caught.  Probably figured he was dealing with a drunk frat bro.  Cab company better do something, just to save face, unless they've got a recording of the kid demanding to be let out of the cab.

2018-01-03 12:45:31 PM
A few years back now, I called myself a cab to get home from a drunken escapade. When it arrived, and the driver and I were discussing the fare, I realized I had spent my last $20 and had no cash on me. I apologized, and got out. The cabbie advised that he was calling the police because I was trying to skip the fare. We hadn't even driven away. So just before he took off, I stuck my foot in front of his tire, and when he ran it over I screamed like a banshee and told him I was going to sue him and his cab company for every penny they had. He did not call the police.

Dont bring me into this.

Maybe the son is just dumb. I knew a girl that once she realized she had left her pass at home wanted to leave the train in the middle of nowhere and just remain there, late at night just so she wouldnt have to talk to the ticket audit guy and explain the situation or ask one of the persons with her to pay for her ticket. Some people push shyness into dumb situations.

At which point the cabbie should have said, "Fark you kid, someone at your house can pay me or I'll eat the loss before I read about your frozen corpse being found in a snowbank in the spring."

If the kid insists on getting out and walking in that weather you radio in to have them send the cops or you call the cops yourself and let them handle the idiot.  You don't leave someone dressed that way in that weather to, quite likely, expire.

Why would anyone who has done anything blatantly stupid and unwise have done it? No idea.... but it happens. If you've ever had a job where you interact with the general population at large on a regular basis you'd have dealt with people many, many times who make choices so obviously stupid that you wonder how the fark they managed to get out of their own house alive again today.

Years ago I took the VIA rail from Vancouver to Toronto during the winter.  We stopped outside of some small town for a passenger to exit. It was -30 and no one was there to pick the person up, so the engineer backed the train up until we we're near houses and a road crossing.  The engineer then informed the rest of the passengers we were waiting until the person entered one of the houses to wait for their ride.

I never expected that level of customer  service from a train company.

In Alberta it's mostly illegal to run without the meter except for regulated flat-rate routes.  It's to protect tourists from being gouged and to prevent drivers from working under the table.  Meters are even sealed to prevent tampering.  He was supposed to shut off the meter at the agreed price.

Either 1) His parents are the type who would whoop his ass if he showed up at the door with an angry cab driver demanding money, or 2) He has an ego the size of Texas and cannot fathom having to ask his parents for money to bail him out of a situation he put himself in.

Although I side with the kid, if this is the way he dressed in that weather, Darwin will eventually claim him.

Saw a news story last night - he gave his coat to his girlfriend earlier in the evening.  Still no defending stupidity - on both sides

mongbiohazard: Mikey1969: Yeah, at the VERY least, the cab driver lets the guy out and IMMEDIATELY radios dispatch to tell them what's up.

Why would anyone who has done anything blatantly stupid and unwise have done it? No idea.... but it happens. If you've ever had a job where you interact with the general population at large on a regular basis you'd have dealt with people many, many times who make choices so obviously stupid that you wonder how the fark they managed to get out of their own house alive again today.

So sure, the cabby's assertion is quite possibly BS...... but it's also possible he's telling the truth. This young man doesn't seem to be the brightest bulb in the chandelier. I could go either way.

And what the cabbie SHOULD do in a situation like this is call dispatch at the very least and report this immediately. And that's the least... In reality, he should call the police and mention it, so they at least know where to look for the frozen body.

boyvoyeur: Mikey1969: Why would anyone insist on just getting out of the cab in the middle of nowhere?

Terpsma said her son had been drinking that night but was not drunk or belligerent.

Kids who drink don't make the best decisions. I'm not sure mom is getting the whole truth.

He's 19 and mom is still helicoptering like this?

Yeah, I'm not inclined to believe her version of anything.

Prince George: 19? He's a grown man. He should be smart enough to not go out in that kind of weather in just a hoodie and shouldn't need his mommy to fight his battles for him.  Or cuddle him to warm him up ewwwww.

Grown people make bad decisions from time to time.  I would hope that if I made such a foolish decision someone would care enough to step in and say "Hey I can't just stand by and watch something terrible happen to you."

NotThatGuyAgain: Two stories, one from the cabbie and one from someone who had been drinking.  Meh, flip a coin.

If the kid had been drinking it actually makes it worse for the driver.

Cab drivers accept a "Duty of Care" when they take a fare into their vehicle.  That includes certain legal  obligations. It's more than possible this driver was in breach of that duty.

37C is normal body temperature. It would have to plummet to 36 before I'd complain.

That's just with your weird moon-man method of temperature.

uttertosh: Toxophil: //Dry cold is manageable with proper cloths. Just don't stop moving.

Oh, I've had far worse days in +4C here in Malmö at 85% humidity and blowing, than I had in Norrland with -19C and dryasabone. Same clothes, too.

I was in Malmo ( sorry no umlauts) 3 years ago for the World Junior hockey tournament. My wife had me buy her a Canada Goose coat because if I was going to take her to Sweden in the winter, she needed that coat. There from Dec. 26 to Jan 5, never saw the temps go below 4 C, she never wore the coat while we were there.
Nice city, people treated us drunken hockey fans well, New Year's eve was fantastic, surprised you don't burn your city down with all the fireworks.
Your "gold something" beer sucks but it was all I had at the arena for 11 days.

Back in my day, they'd only close down the schools for -50F and below, and yes, I'd walk a mile in the snow to and from the buss stop every day.
/Uphill, both ways.
//Dry cold is manageable with proper cloths. Just don't stop moving.
///Cabbie is still an idiot.

That's fine if you're prepared for it, but you never just drop somebody off without making sure that they're safe, in all ways. In that kind of weather, nobody is really safe out at night in the boonies. That's how horror movies get started.
Fark, if I passed someone walking down the road in that weather, I'd just about insist that they get in the car, unless they looked like an ax murderer or Jeremiah Johnson.

I saw a couple of probably methed-out people going out for a hike in Arizona when it was about 110--no hats, no special shoes, no water.....I just left them, but you know--people are dumb.

What surprises me a little about the Fark reaction to this story is the number of stupid Farkers who actually believe the cabby.  I have to assume they've never taken a cab in their entire bucolic lives.

Stupid Farkers?  I take it you don't have much experience with kids who do something stupid, then cover for themselves by telling mom a different story.  Because if you had, you would understand why they're not jumping on the cabbie with full force rage.  I'm not going to jump on the cabby either, the kid may have decided to get out, thinking the meter was going to continue to run, and he'll get in trouble for the amount.  I'm calling him a kid, because he seems to lack life experiences to survive on his own.  I have a bro in his 30s who would screw this up.  Are there bad cabbies out there, sure, but don't always assume anything.

Canadians have always been known to be weak, especially when it comes to freezing temperatures. Real Americans grab their soccer uniforms and pick up a ball at -40.

Sign of the ages and helicopter mom has her son wrapped in bubble wrap.  No need for you to take responsibility son, we will just hold everyone else accountable.  As the mother of a 19 year old son who you are still breast feeding by going to the news,  should you not have made sure he had enough money?  To have the cabbie lose his job over your little special flower not being prepared by your lack of parenting is disgraceful. I only hope she reads Fark (but we all know she probably doesn't)

I take it you didn't read the article.  The cabbie violated the policy of his own company, as well as basic human decency, so it doesn't matter at all if the kid lied about what happened.  The maturity or judgment of the kid has nothing to do with the fact that the cabby farked up by the standards of his own employer.

/to be fair, my kids are a lot smarter than the Farkers who didn't bother to read the whole article before jumping on the get off my lawn bus.

Glad you had it nice with us - do drop a line if you're back over, and I'll lead you to better beer. Promise! :)

I did read it, and I also know no matter what policy is, a grown 19 yro brat has the right to get out of a cab.  What is the cabby going to say?  A legally grown man has the right to get out of a car if they want to.  Company policy doesn't outweigh the rights of the passenger.  You're just showing more and more how you don't know much.  It's a he said-he said, and there's no reason to lay into one without really knowing the truth, which will never be known.

/I seriously doubt the existence of your kids.

Which does nothing to excuse the cabbie.  It doesn't matter one whit what the kid did or didn't do, or how much extrapolating you do.  Cabbies cannot abandon their fares in dangerous circumstances. That's not a difficult concept.

Hey, genius.  The cab company has a policy of not dropping folks into dangerous situations.  Even if the cabby couldn't stop the kid from getting out, he had a legal responsibility to let someone know about what happened.  Did he?

I wouldn't let you die mind you but I'd let you suffer a bit in the interest of learning a life lesson and I'd certainly call you a dumbass.  At nineteen it's time to own your dumbassery not have mommy give you a cuddle you and threaten to beat up the mean old cabbie even if he is an asshole.  Cabbie probably should be fired but kid needs to grow a pair or ask Mommy if she can borrow his daddy's from her purse.

The absolute least he could have done is contact dispatch if only to CYA. "Hey Lou, I have this dumb kid who insists on getting out in the middle of nowhere. Just letting you know".
