I bet I could drink St. Bernardus for a week and be fine.  But I would still need a novelty beer at least once a day - one with caffeine.

I could do this easily, just beer for a week, no food........
But then I'd have to take out a home-equity loan for a bathroom reconstruction.

Supposedly Guinness is nutritionally complete except for vitamin C and calcium.

Place I read it did the math and to get full daily requirements would take 48 pints... per day.

Err - yeah, and?  Assuming you have adequate water, you can survive just fine on nothing but that for a week.  You won't be very happy, and you won't be good for much - you might well end up in the hospital for a day or two to recover afterward, but you won't be dead.  Or even seriously messed up once they got you back to adequate nutrition for a week or two.  Now 2 weeks... that's gonna be a problem.

/after about 3 days you start getting a little wobbly and hazy though
//after 4 the mental effects are pretty serious
///chronic pain problems sometimes = not eating for quite a bit - which is how I found those 2 facts out.  I hit the floor after 4 and ended up in the hospital.  Damn hard to eat when you hurt bad though.

How long did various monks "fast" on beer (presumably the stout stuff)?  Was it all of Lent, or just bits?

They drank 'Bock' beers. This one is local, and extremely yummy(It's actually YAF, my new term for if I ever start a restaurant review business. My highest honor will be 'YAF', or "Yummy as Fark".).

Here's the Wiki on Bocks:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bock

And my company is a bunch of mamby-pambys, so I will get flagged if I go to a beer site, but here's a link about the "fasting" thing that was the footnote for that page of the Wiki, so it should have some good stuff.
http://www.germanbeerinstitute.com/Doppelbock.html

Strike that, Fark doesn't like that link. If you go to the Wiki, click on the footnote for the thing about monks fasting.,, maybe going there directly will work.

Fasting for a few days to a week has health benefits. Requires your body to revert back to what your ancestors had to endure when food wasn't abundant and had to be found. I doubt many ancestors died from heart disease or colon cancer.

This is the 10th time I've read some variation of the "I stayed alive on beer for a week" themed-article.

More disconcertingly, it is the 787th week that I've lived it.

I survived on beer for five years, as did most of my friends and roommates at CU Boulder.

Some did for all 40-some days - but they were drinking Bocks that were full of a crapload of calories.  At that point you're pretty much just on a liquid carb diet.  Not ideal, but doable assuming you aren't having to do major heavy labor.  And for Lent, they cut down on that bigtime in monasteries for fairly obvious reasons.  Even for monks though, doing all however many days of Lent on beer alone was a bit of a "holier than most" stunt.  Most monasteries just went with small amounts of bread or grain porridge or some sort along with water and called it good.

There's a lot of documentaries on it, do your own research. First time I've heard someone refer to fasting as "new age".

It is, though. There's this quack idea that you have to "purify" yourself by fasting every now and then, and there is absolutely no medical science that backs that up. Strikes me more as guilt from having shiatty dietary habits more than anything.

One of the festivals we attend gets really hot, there have been many occasions when we have to count the days on vodka & juice and force ourselves to eat something.

There may be drugs involved too.

I thought the writer was a typical beer clown, but then he redeemed himself a little :

"The best solution, it turned out, was dessert stouts: chocolate stouts and peanut butter stouts and stouts made with unfermented milk sugar. Nutella stouts, even (see page 28). They are the opposite of anything I have ever wanted from beer, novelty brews for drinkers with the palates of children."
