I did a lot of background work on this movie, and I'm curious to see if I can spot myself.

I'm one of the two cops process serving Jeff Gillooly as he's helping people off a bus (I'm the one not serving him with the papers.) I'm also guarding the doors to the courtroom as Tonya is in court, and I'm one of the cops hustling the group of guys past the crowd of reporters.

I'm also in the crowd during the broken laces incident as well as the boxing scenes, but I'm sure I won't be seen in those.

Wait, the people in the movie have legal troubles? Spoiler alert! I thought it was about ice skating.

It's really good and Margot Robbie is fantastic. It handles a crazy story filled with crazy people with a perfect mix of humor and drama.

I'm just curious to see how much people who didn't live through will enjoy it or even want to see it. The movie was relevant to the group I went with since we all lived through it and remembered it pretty vividly. I think the characters and story are all interesting enough to make people interested, but essentially it is just a movie about some weird shiat that happened in the figure skating world 20 years ago.

She was only somewhat interesting back in the knee-whackin' era, and that's only because she was hot. At this point, I couldn't give a rat's butthole.

Not being American or interested in ice skating, I didn't really follow the story when it happened. I liked the movie. Robbie was great, the fat bodyguard was hillarious, and Allison Janney is a freaking goddess of the screen.

Nancy has always been a stuck-up rich biatch who thought good skating was just a bunch of pretty poses on the ice. Tonya had that extra pizzazz so it was disappointing that she got involved in this crazy scheme. Many were happy that the Russians fixed the Olympics so Baiul would get the gold.

Funny enough, both come from working class backgrounds (Kerrigan's father was a welder, Harding's was a mechanic I think) with both parents doing everything they could for them (Kerrigan's father traded Zamboni work for lessons).

Harding was more....'redneck' however (she enjoyed hunting and drag racing) and her mom abused her.  She also dropped out of school (getting her GED later).

Yeah, I really enjoyed the movie and enthusiastically recommended it to my eighteen-year-old daughter, which necessitated a lengthy effort on my part to contextualize the story. I just about had her sold until she realized it's about ice skating and not skateboarding.

The narrative at the time was that the main reason that Tonya Harding was being considered for the
Olympic team was that she could pull off a triple lutz (which was something of a holy grail for figure
skaters at the time), but that Kerrigan was a better all-around skater.  It morphed quickly into proxy
class warfare, fueled mostly by the fact that Kerrigan looked like the stereotype of the upper class
ice queen.

Kerrigan lived in Stoneham. If she wanted the same socio-economic status, she would have grown up in Southie or Dot.

DjangoStonereaver: triple lutz

triple axel.  Most top women had triple lutzes already in the early 90s.  Triple axels by women were very rare then (maybe still are -- I no longer keep up).  Harding and Japanese skater Midori Ito were basically it.  Although I've seen Harding land one, I'm not sure she ever did in competition.

Her signature move was a backflip landing on one skate. Still the only one to do it in Olympic competition.

Um, no.  Tonya Harding won the US Figure Skating Championships in 1994.  There was pretty much no question that she was going to be on the US Olympic team for 1994.  The question was whether or not Nancy Kerrigan was going to be on the team since she had to withdraw from the US Championships due to being clubbed in the knee by Tonya's ex-husband.  There was a strong possibility that she would not recover in time for the Olympics, and besides, she did not finish the competition so how was it fair if she got to go?  Everyone knows that injuries are part of the breaks in athletics - but of course there were highly unique circumstances in this case.

Afterwords, as the weeks went on before the Olympics, the evidence kept pointing more and more at Tonya and she was always evasive when the press confronted her, sometimes getting up and walking out of the studio rather than answer questions.  She acted very much like a guilty person, which of course she was.  The notion that this had anything to do with some sort of faux class warfare is laughable.  The media buzz was that it looked more and more likely that we were sending a criminal to represent the US at the Olympics.

You know, I don't consider myself a trashy person, but I think I would rather hang out with someone trashy than someone prissy.

That's assuming she didn't have anything to do with the hit.  If she did, fark her, but my understanding is she tried to protect her BF and that's what got her in trouble.

Anyway, Kerrigan just looks like somebody I would not want to hang out with.  At least with Tanya I could slum it and have a beer with her.

Except now she's all Christian, so I guess neither.

It doesn't matter if her family actually had money or not, the stuck up rich biatch was her persona and she milked it for all it was worth. Her skating was boring.
