Uhm, Pokeman #4, Witcher Wild Hunt #10?

Don't think so.

Is this the thread where we argue which RPGs are the best without anyone actually agreeing on what an RPG is?

Obviously, they call them role-playing games because you're PLAYING A ROLE in a GAME.  They are a subset of real-time strategy games, because all games are played in REAL-TIME and have STRATEGY, stoopid.

Also, IGN is garbage, stop giving them clicks.  Well, wait, actually, this comment thread hasn't gone to the frontpage of Fark yet, and I'm posting important things in it.  Greenlight the article, mods, and then the rest of you, promise you're not going to click it.  Thanks in advance.

Honestly a little surprised they didn't find a way of putting WoW on there somewhere...

However, does remind me it has been too long since I have play Diablo II. At work, so cannot check but is it available on Steam or GoG by any chance?

That was a pretty good list.  The number doesn't really matter all that much.  I don't think many would rank Ultima VII ahead of Skyrim, but both deserve to be about where they are.

WoW is #5.....

That list could only have been more wrong if they'd included Pac-Man as an RPG.

It has New Vegas, which is better than both 3 & 4.

Oh - RPG video games. I was hoping for a definitive list of actual RPGs...

Your challenging of the mods seems to have stalled this thread. They're unsure whether to red or green it.

Lunar and FFVII too low.

Xenoblade Chronicles should be higher on the list.

Final Fantasy VII is in a good place. It is a good JRPG but it is also an overrated JRPG. And IX is better and is rightly ranked higher.

I played through the entire Baldur's Gate trilogy, start to finish (using the Trilogy mod to merge 1 and 2 and Ascension to make 2's endgame more challenging) immediately after finishing Mass Effect 3 to remind myself that, yes, Bioware was once able to make a trilogy without screwing up the ending.

I guess it depends whether you're more into PvE or PvP.

I've only played three of those (Fallout, New Vegas and Deus Ex) and only heard of four more. Guess I'm not an RPG fan.

No, Diablo II (and other Blizzard games) are only playable through their own service. You can buy keys or even disks from elsewhere but they all use Blizzard's servers.

I scrolled through that and first thought "I don't know half of these" then I had to consider how much time I've wasted that I in fact know half of them.

Because the grind of work isn't fun if you don't kill people?

There's a rule in Dota 2 that you need to have played at least one-hundred hours in order to comment on the game.  Same thing for real-life, only instead, you need to kill at least one-hundred people.

It keeps the pacifists and the hippies from having their worthless opinions heard, and it works.

No Legend of Heroes: Trails of (various)?  But Ys makes the list?  Not saying that Ys shouldn't be there, it totally should be, but the Legends of Heroes is every bit as good, and more in the 'story based' side of things, compared to Ys's action style.

Valkyria Chronicles is a fine game.... but by no means is it a traditional 'RPG' in the commonly understood sense of the word.  Likewise, Stardew Valley.  A fine game... but it's more a simulator an an RPG.

I'm okay with Pokémon being pretty high - it's nothing groundbreaking, but the series as a whole is likely to be one of the first RPGs that a lot of people are going to play nowadays.

Uncle Pooky: scottydoesntknow: BizarreMan: No Fallout 3 or 4?

Try again.

It has New Vegas, which is better than both 3 & 4.

I've always felt 3 was a lot better than NV.

The best attributes for 3 was that it was the first 3D one you could explore, the location was great, and you could nuke an entire city within a couple hours of playing it.

But it lacked a lot. It felt sparsely populated, a lot of bugs and glitches (though maybe not as much as NV), and the ending (without DLC) sucked.

NV had a lot of bugs as well (I found out I couldn't enter the strip without it crashing unless I was wearing a red beret the first time I went through), but the role-playing and story were top notch. Plus it had one of my all time favorite DLCs (Old World Blues).

It has the Bard's Tale. I am happy.

Final Fantasy VII is in a good place. It is a good JRPG but it is also an overrated JRPG. And IX is better and is rightly ranked higher.

I hated 9.  Then again, I didn't like the back half of 6 either.  I'd put 4 and 7 ahead of both.

/and Tactics miles ahead of either
/surprised to see Legend of Dragoon make the list

"Lunar: Silver Star Story was first released on Sega Genesis in 1996 before hitting PlayStation two years later." - Wrong, it was released for Sega CD

//Lunar 2 was better imo (61 vs 64)

FF7 is way too low if they put farking Stardew Valley ahead of it!

Also, FF12 is on the list.  IMO, these observations make this list completely bunk.

Yeah. All of this. Except the part with the "and the ending (without the DLC) sucked". It sucked even with the DLC. Charon or Fawkes could flip the switch, but noooo, you have to.

I wish NV had 4's looks. 4 looks amazing. I'm slowly starting to get into the 1st person talking thing and they really screwed up the controls. NV had the best story lines and DLCs. It worked. Well, when it worked.

Of the 3, I'd put New Vegas as the best.

Sees Dragon Age 1 and 3 are on the list, good.

They placed FF12 higher than them both!?!?! Bullshiat. The plot and character development are so much better than the super-complicated anime plots FF has. Grrrr

Another good one is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Great game with solid controls and good exploration that was killed because a moron who had never made games before was running the show.

Mass Effect is an RPG?

2018-01-02 01:30:31 PM
1-3 are right, although I have to imagine that they'll go down the list as younger writers start taking over these kinds of things. FF6, Chrono Trigger, and SoM are the only RPGs I replay once a year or so, and it's amazing just how well they all hold up.

Some of Kefka's dialogue is absolutely cringe-worthy now, but his overall arc and motivation are still the best in the series.

I liked FFVII more than IX, but IX was good.  FFVII may not be the best thing ever, but it was pretty groundbreaking in terms of the visuals and pure scope and size of the world and story for the time, and it was a huge commercial success.

I need to replay VIII and IX, though I'll need to dig up hardware capable of playing them.  I do have an original PS3 with the hardware backwards compatibility in a closet somewhere I could dust off.

2018-01-02 01:32:36 PM
Suikoden 2 should have been higher than Final Fantasy 6 and FF Tactics should have been higher than both.

It was to see a lot of the old games in the list. Ultima 4 was a huge step up from the first 3. Seeing a Front Mission in the list was freaking awesome. It is sad that series died trying to be game it never was.

2018-01-02 01:33:41 PM
Also, WoW or Pokemon should be higher ranked than Chrono Trigger. CT is a great game (I guess, never played it), but WoW and Pokemon have not only been more successful in terms of dollars but also in bringing people into RPG's.
