(Rolling Stone)   It's been an eventful year for music, to say the least. And with the year winding down, pretty much every music critic and magazine has compiled their "best of" lists. Except us. Until now. It's a look back with the Sunday Morning Music Club   ( rollingstone.com) divider line

Well, there was that one song that was all in Spanish that was all over the radio this past summer.  That was pretty good.

5. Ted Leo - The Hanged Man
4. Alvvays - Antisocialites
3. Margo Price - All American Made

Not a whole lot of new stuff really impressed me this year. We stumbled on the fairly obscure Cosmo Jarvis, who's British or something. He's been fairly inactive lately, but here's an unfairly overlooked artist worth checking out.

Start here:
Love This - Cosmo Jarvis (HD)

He admittedly needs some guidance in the video-creation department.

You know, now that I think about it I really didn't search out any new music this past year.  Between being really sick the first few months of the year & then later on being laid up with a bum leg, the music this year has pretty much been the equivalent of comfort food.  Something that I can listen to that I already know really well, don't have to think about it/search for deeper meanings/etc.  Just enjoying it's comforting embrace.

I'm ok with that, it's good to step back & regroup every so often.  Here's to the new year & new music (raises coffee cup in salute)

These lists have reminded me that I need to get the Pyrrhon album. Not sure how I missed that release this year.
Haven't really kept up on much this year, though the new Knife The Glitter album (members from Dillinger Escape Plan and John Frum) sounds pretty good from the couple singles I listened to.
/disappointed Agoraphobic Nosebleed didn't release their set of four EP's this year as they planned

I buy very few albums anymore, and I didn't buy a single album released in 2017, or the twenty-first century, for that matter.  I just don't care anymore.

I check out the music articles on Rolling Stone and just shake my head.

2017-12-31 10:17:56 AM
I think I only bought 2 albums this year, which is weird for me now that I think about it, and they were Lana Del Rey: Lust for Life and Lorde: Melodrama.

Lana Del Rey was meh and Lorde which I technically bought for my little girl turned out decent.

Good call. I can not stop listening to this album. Probably the only 2017 album that I absorbed at all, since I spend most of my time listening to '60s-'90s artists.

The drum programming is absolutely awesome. On the fifth or sixth track, the full drum beat doesn't even drop until minute 5 of the 9 minute song, but it is a glorious release of tension.

Lots of moody synthesizers to capture the national blahs of 2017. Some of the tunes have a very David Byrne/Talking Heads feel. Recommended to all.

Some good things I enjoyed this year -
Anima Damnata - Nefarious Seed Grows to Bring Forth Supremacy of the Beast
Below - Upon a Pale Horse
Cardinals Folly - Deranged Pagan Sons
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pacifisticuffs
Firebreather (Sweden) - s/t
Hades Archer - Temple of the Impure
Necrot - Blood Offerings
Occasvs - Nocturnal Majestic Mysteria
Owlcrusher -s/t
Vassafor - Malediction
Venenum - Trance of Death
Weregoat - Pestilential Rites of Infernal Fornication

I also just recently discovered Drug Honkey's - Cloak of Skies and Enslaved's E, both of which are quite good.

Pretty good year

I rediscovered Pee Wee Russell in 2017. I had originally listened to his early Dixieland stuff but that grew tiresome. I've several of his late career material and -- this is important -- everyone in the house liked it. Even the people who don't much care for jazz. And we had a crowded house over the holidays.

I'm neither up to date nor organized enough to draw up a Best of 2017 list. That being said, here are some 2017 releases that I enjoyed.

Northumbria - Markland
Cryo Chamber - Yog-Sothoth
Sparks - Hippopotamus
Pugwash - Silverlake
Gary Numan - Savage

I spend a lot of time playing catch-up. This year's new-to-me stuff came from Officers, Iron & Wine, Dion, Swans, Coil, Dennis Wilson, Shrine, Hilyard, and Gary Numan. Numan takes the Find of the Year prize. I knew about him in the '80s and have always loved Replicas, but I didn't know until a few months ago that he was still around and still making music. Started checking out the stuff he's been doing since the early '90s, and holy crap he's awesome.

2017-12-31 10:42:19 AM
The only album I've liked in its entirety (which is rare for me) is SZA's Ctrl, which has gotten a lot of repeat play in the past few months.

LewDux: [img.fark.net image 850x307][View Full Size image _x_] Pretty good year

Pretty good list.

CBL and Porter Ricks would be in my list.

I'd add:

Ancestral Voices - Divination (Horo)
ASC - Trans-Neptunian Objects (Auxiliary)
Ascendant - Particle Horizon (Synphaera Records)
BT Gate X-138 - Streets Of Arkhangelsk (Tehnofonika Records)
Bvdub - Heartless (n5MD)
Clark - Death Peak (Warp Records)
Claudio Prc -Volumi Dinamici (Semantica Records)
cv313 - Beyond Dreams [Analog Passages] (echospace [detroit])
DeepChord - Auratones (Soma Quality Recordings)
Fourth Dimension - The Perfect Form (Synphaera Records)
Gas - Narkopop (Kompakt)
Hans Zimmer & Benjamin Wallfisch - Blade Runner 2049 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Sony Music)
Intrusion - Amongst the Stars (echospace [detroit])
Kangding Ray - Hyper Opal Mantis (Stroboscopic Artefacts)
Mohlao - Landforms (Silent Season)
Voiski - Disconnections, Music For Clouds (Super 95)
Woob - Tokyo Run (Isometric)

There really was a lot more that I'm skipping over, these are just my personal favorites because I'm not up to sorting through a really big list this morning.

Roger Waters - Is This The Life We Really Want?

Oh, forgot about that album. Yet to check the entire thing out but have liked what I heard so far. Nice throwback to the 90's industrial metal scene.

To the Bone by Steven Wilson is my album of the year. Which is funny, because when it came out, it was my least favorite Steven Wilson album. It certainly gets better with repeated listens.

the Show Of The Year for me was.... RICK ASTLEY.

if you didn't get to go see him, you missed it.
My only regret was that I forgot to ask him what he thought of the whole Rickroll phenomenon when we chatted backstage after the show. He's one of the nicest guys in the business.

Totally agree.  The first time I saw him was at the Murat in Indy and, except for a few shiat kickers in the back, when he sang it was as quiet as a church. I've never seen anything like it.

My list will be short, I bought 2 albums this year: Alvvays - Antisocialites and The Weather Station - self titled.

If you like Joni Mitchell, check out The Weather Station, essentially it's one woman, Tamara Lindeman, with a backing band.

Alvvays is an indie band from Toronto (by way of other places). Antiscoialites is their second album, and is backed by a very Canadian video; they've been digitally inserted into footage from Expo 67 (Montreal) for their song Dreams Tonite. Their style has been called "Jangle Pop"

A ton of good music this year.  Enough that it was really tough to even narrow down a top 20.

1. Pallbearer - Heartless
2. Aeternam - Ruins of Empires
3. Veal & Ardor - Devil is Fine
4. Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper
5. Igorrr - Savage Sinusoid
6. Enslaved - E
7. Aether Realm - Tarot
8. Hallatar - No Stars Upon the Bridge
9. Gloson - Grimen
10. Vallenfyre - Fear Those Who Fear Him
11. Lor - In Forgotten Sleep
12. Hexis - Tando Ashanti
13. November's Doom - Hamartia
14. Replicaire - Do Not Deviate
15. Myrkur - Mareridt
16. Falls of Rauros - Vigilance Perennial
17. Incantation - Profane Nexus
18. Hideous Divinity - Adveniens
19. Morbid Angel - Kingdoms Disdained
20. Pillorian - Obsidian Arc

Song of the Year
- I'd have to go with Igorrr's "Opus Brain".

Veal & Ardor's "Come on Down", Pallbearer's "Thorns", and Aeternam's "Damascus Gate" would all come  *this* close to being in that top spot.
