Desert sand is no good for concrete. The grains are too small and too rounded, it makes weak concrete that lacks durability.

OTOH : this is good news for folks in the Steel industry. If concrete gets expensive you can save a lot of it by framing structures in steel.

You mean Fark's collective vagina since he got elected.  Your post being a prime example of the phenomenon, where even completely unrelated topics that have fark-all to do with politics are a chance for you to virtue signal precisely how much you hate Trump to your fellow Trump haters.

This is what Fark has been reduced to.  It is a sad shadow of its former self where a diversity of opinion was welcome.

Not so much.

As Target Builder noted above, there are different kinds of sand. Some types work in concrete, some don't.

On the other hand, there's a lot of the "right" kind of sand for concrete, you're just going to have to ship it in from farther and farther away - or make it out of crushed rock.

I hand make my own sand in small batches.  The process begins when my rocks are delivered via bicycle messenger.  After a rigorous quality inspection of the rocks for cracks and chips they are transferred to an upcycled cathedral door that I use as a table.  I then proceed to cover the rocks in my Amish sand making quilt and beat them with my sand mallets.  The mallets really are a wonder to behold.  The were passed down to me by my grandfather and originally manufactured by the third most prominent mallet-works in all of Silesia.  After a long day of crushing, the sand is packaged in custom biodegradable sacks with screen printed labels.  The label designs come from a collective of rehabilitated cough drop addicts who work in graphic design and dabble in performance art.  If you buy sand at you're local hardware co-op or Whole Foods you have seen my work.

Whenever I see this "not enough sand" articles it's actually the round sand that they claim to be running out of. They're claiming that an island was eaten away in this article, as an example, and that would be round sand.

I did that for a while but then I found out that they buy cheap rocks at the Lowes an hour away from that village and palm them off as artisan.

Now I pile sand in my yard to make my own stone to crush for sand. It may take a bit longer but it is fully sustainable and I can putter around growing snails for the calcium carbonate shells while it finishes lithifying.

The middle east actually importssand from abroad, since the desert sand is no good for building.

/although I'd think if you dig a bit deeper, there'd be coarse sand?
