I was going to make the same joke with any number of other bands out there.

Sonic Youth came to mind.

CSB time:

A buddy and me got kinda wasted while playing around with a new set of drum trigger pads once. We went to put some distortion on the drums when something weird happened: the drum machine started a spontaneous rapid-fire triggering. We both looked at each other in confusion and it stopped. Then we both said "What the fark??" and it started again. We fell silent and it stopped again.

Turns out we'd drunkenly put the distortion pedal in between the trigger and the drum machine and the sound of our voices was enough to activate the drum machine because the distortion pedal had amplified the signal. We then tapped the pad and held it up to the speaker: DRUM MACHINE FEEDBACK!

All snarking aside, the pedal will add a certain flavor or "effect" to the guitar signal depending on what the player is looking for.
One of the most common effect pedals and easiest to understand is the wah pedal.

So it applies a wave transformation of some sort, depending on the pedal and the settings?

Conceptually is it a descendant of piano pedals?

A pedal takes the three basic tenets of sound - volume, speed and phase and combines them in different configurations. A tremolo mimics the sound of volume being turned on and off at different speeds, a distortion takes volume and phase, a chorus plays with speed & phase, basically they all use electricity in endless variants of processing those three basic building blocks to make things sound and process differently.
And anyone who says compression is dumb has never mixed or mastered an album from raw recordings. Like anything, its how you use the tools.

Difference being this: It didn't matter if Hendrix was playing with the full arsenal of a professional recording studio or a just an acoustic guitar, it would be amazing either way. He never needed fancy effects, but he could do things with them that regularly blew people's minds. Give that same equipment to a hack, and it'd just be a bunch of bullshiat.

Hendrix used a sh*t ton of effects, especially on records.  His live sets often included fuzz, wah, flange, echo, a uni-vibe, line drivers, and more.  He was constantly pushing the technological envelope with effects and was often introduced to new stuff before they went to the market.

He did, however, work some black magic with just fuzz, wah, and a line driver.

What happens if you mix 100 different colors? Well, if they're paint pigments, you get brown. If it's natural light, you get white light.

I wondered only if this would turn out as either white noise or brown noise? I think the answer is, "yes".

My main pedal is the electro-harmonix tone tattoo, connected to either a blues junior or an ultimate chorus.  that distortion sounds (imo) awesome through the ultimate chorus, just super thick and great for metal.  Or, plug it into the blues junior and turn the gain way back and put just a touch of overdrive on it.

After years of playing with multi effects, I think it has the best mix of your day to day, needed effects without being over the top.

I do also have a line 6 Amplifi, which is a lot of fun to play with.  I never thought to look at their amps until I saw one in a guitar store and realized how fun it is to create sound effect chains through a smartphone.  The thing does have fantastic digital delays and you can create great clean sounds, and the down-tuning synth works surprisingly well with not any notable delay between what your hand does and what your ears hear.  the various amps,Nothing emulates REALLY great.  but it does pretty good for what it is, and it doubles as the best bluetooth speaker I have ever heard.  seriously.  I'd buy one just for how amazing music sounds being played through it.

Yeah, I think there's a difference between just adding effects to your playing, and playing with your effects.

These days my chain is an old fuzz face turned up all the way smacking into a vox wah. Reverb or trem courtesy of the amp (univox 50watt tube thing from older than me and I'm old now). I find many of the new crazy pedals to be as useful as just hitting a sampler, it has one sound, there ya go...
