She and John Sandford are my go-to mystery/thriller writers. Damn, she'll be missed.

You have my condolences. You are not alone in having a favorite author die before they could finish the damn series.

I have been looking for a new series to read, and mysteries are one of my preferred genres.

Best to start at A and keep them in order, or is there a better introduction / stand-out work that will get me hooked?

/would be remiss not to add RIP, miss Grafton
//and, as always, fark cancer!

A friend would traditionally get me her latest book as a Christmas gift, so I just got 'Y'.  It will definitely be a bittersweet read.

/RIP Ms. Grafton

Start at A - she builds the fictional town and the characters, Kinsey's detective career, quite nicely in order. You can start anywhere, but in order gives you all the buildup.

Not a bad idea although an obit as a foreword would not be inappropriate.

Congrats on pulling off a successful, albeit rare, triple negative in a metered sentence.

The English Major: She and John Sandford

That is high praise.  I never read her, now I have to get "A" on my Kindle.

On a side note, read the latest Robert Crais the other day since I had a couple hours downtime, and wooof, he is starting to write like an old man. They have been declining latelyobviously (I don't think anyone can sustain a series much past 10, let alone 15), and I'm giving up. Pretty good run though, Robert Parker was crap by #15 as well.

It's good popcorn stuff, honestly, I was working at Waldenbooks in 1997 and a coworker recommended her to me; I thoroughly enjoyed the books for what they were. It'll be a shame not to see her finish with Z.
On the other hand, I never could get into Janet Evanovich.

I used to travel a lot for work, read a lot of books in the pre-kindle days, I tried to do at least half "literature", and half just for fun.
Kinsey was fun. I was always glad to see the next letter in the airport bookstore.
I think Sue would have been great fun at a dinner party, and much looser than her rather conservative (not political conservative) writing style.
RIP Sue, and thanks for the smiles.

I'm wondering if she at least had an outline for the Z book that some (hopefully talented) writer might be able to flesh out.

When Raymond Chandler died,he left behind 4 chapters of an unfinished novel, Poodle Springs.  Thirty years later, this final Philip Marlowe novel was published with additional chapters added by Robert B. Parker (at the request of the Chandler estate).

When Parker himself die, he left one completed novel, and one unfinished book, Silent Night.

Sadly, the title Z is for Zeroalso applies to how many pages Sue Grafton had managed to complete.  Her family is adamantly opposed to bringing in a ghost writer.

It's awful to say, but Jordan's death saved the series.  Sanderson revived a series that had completely lost the thread.

I remember her saying that about movies way back when she was still in the first half of the alphabet. Apparently she is friends with Sara Paretsky and both were horrified by what Hollywood did to the latter's V.I. Warshawski books.
