A lot of people I know were surprised she was Deadpool's roommate.

That wasn't Nichelle Nichols.  Leslie Uggams played Blind Al.

From what I heard, she kept more than her hailing frequencies open when Gene was around

Leslie Uggams needs a bigger place in show business history, plus she can tell people this

Was in the audience when Buddy Holly and The Crickets made their debut at the Apollo Theater in 1957.

As long as she got her bottle of brandy, she was alright. That was part of the contract for her to show up to a convention. Like most original series people, heck most of the people in Sci-Fi, she was a pretty nice person. One small convention she went to, there was a kid in a wheelchair she not only signed something for him she apparently (I got this third hand from another vendor) got James Doohan and Walter Koenig to send the kid personalized autograph photos as well.

/kid was pretty sick, as in dying

I honestly thought she'd died 2-3 years ago.  Huh.

And she wasn't the only one. Gene Roddenberry was (allegedly) quite fond of the casting couch.

Leslie Uggams was one of the entertainers I first saw when she was a guest on the original run of  The Muppet Show.

I met here when I was 15 at the 1976 Star Trek convention. Why yes, I'm old and yes, she was. She sang the theme to the show from a stage rigged up as a reasonable fascimile of the Enterprise bridge. Very nice woman.

Somewhere I have a photo of me towering over Harlan Ellison. I doubt I was even five ten at age 15.

In addition, that was the first time I laid hands on a computer. There was a room full of WANG monochrome terminals with an early Star Trek sim running on them. Sure, write your own joke: Playing a networked sim in '76 is worth a lot of belt onions.

She sort of lost coherence towards the end of her appearance at the 2015 Denver Comic Con.  I hope she is doing OK.
