(Daily Mail)   Bono claims he nearly died during production of U2's latest album, referring to incident as "extinction event." The recording equipment and mics, alas, were in perfect health   ( dailymail.co.uk) divider line

The Doom of 2016 only took good musicians, so I doubt this was a Final Destination type mulligan.

Doesn't "extinction event" refer to a whole species? Does that mean that Bono classes himself as a completely different.... wait - a lot of things are now making sense...

calufrax: Doesn't "extinction event" refer to a whole species? Does that mean that Bono classes himself as a completely different.... wait - a lot of things are now making sense...

Extinction events refer to sudden die off of many species. Like when the asteroid Helios-685 struck Earth and over 50% of life died. The second largest extinction event Ordovician-Silurian 440 million years ago was caused by a gamma ray burst. I think Bono was referring to was the Edge going off his vegan diet and having his own "gamma ray burst" in the studio while recording.

This may explain why this album is such a hot mess. They went in expecting to be talking about one thing and then the Syrian Refugee thing happened, his health scare, and it moved away from the original intent. Which if you are using the right producer, it's fine. Brian Eno could focus them. I am not sure the guy from One Republic could or did.

I am beginning to think this Bono fellow might have a bit of an overinflated opinion of himself.

And while he refrained from going into the details of the event,

Stopped reading there. Attention whore gonna attention whore since this album "explores the themes of mortality." OF COURSE he just happened to nearly die during the making of it.

He's like the Emmitt Smith of pop singers. Always faking an injury as a way of searching for glory. Almost every goddamn run, Emmitt would limp off the field as if he just sustained yet another possible career ending injury. Two plays later he got the handoff and miraculously got 7 yards for the first down. Like a hero. fark Emmitt Smith. And Bono? Shove your extinction event up your arse.

I took my wife to see U2 in a big stadium concert.  Having a great time, enjoying it very much.  Until the inevitable Bono lecture, honoring some left wing charitable cause, pointing attention to suffering people, whatever.  Way to bring down a joyous occasion, where 70,000 people are spending hundreds if not thousands to have a good time, but you better remind them of poor kids in Africa.

Taught me to tune Bono out.  I ain't about feeling guilty for being American and having enough money to go to a concert and buy songs.

2017 took out Tom Petty, Malcolm Young, Greg Allman, etc. I don't doubt that music exists.

/ but letting Bono slide, I doubt God's existence more than usual

Saw hm on the recent tour. I like their music a lot. Incredible players. And I agree with the majority of political opinions he voices,  bit I get annoyed listening to them from him. European rockers rich with American cash are the last people I want telling me how my cushy life is destroying the world. I don't cause famines or create dictators. I could do more to relieve the suffering. I could more closely examine my senate and house member's positions on foreign policy and advocacy for those with dire needs, but shut the fark up about it Bono because your motivation attempts are counterproductive.

Bono's stage activism always struck me as particularly hamfisted, I think in part because U2 hasn't written that many explicitly "political" songs since the early 80s. Apparently he wasn't so bothered by all of the various ills of the world during recording sessions over the past 15+ years where mostly everything I have heard from them since just sounds like middle-of-the-road stadium rock.

Say what you will about someone like RATM, but by wearing their politics on their sleeves just in the their music alone, it basically serves as a warning that "oh, if you see us perform live, expect to be lectured a few times about the evils of capitalism, regardless of how hypocritical it may seem or how disinterested you might otherwise be in hearing it".

Wettner: This may explain why this album is such a hot mess....I am not sure the guy from One Republic could or did.

I'm really on the fence about SoE.  It has -- and this is true of virtually any album these days -  3-4 outstanding songs, 2-3 "enhhh" sngs, and 2-3 bad / filler songs.  things i don't like / am disappointed by, in the order i think of tehm:

1.  the song selection.  the deluxe edition has probably 2 songs that are better than the middling 3-4 songs above.  why were they left off?
2.  why was "Ordinary Love", which was originally released in i think 2013, re-released with the remix on this album?
3.   I don't know if One Direction guy was credited as a writer on "Summer Of Love", which he damn well should be, as there's a Youtube clip of him doing that same riff and opening 10+ seconds, for One Direction, circa 2014.  And that's also true of "Lights Of Home".  They apparently got Haim's permission to co-opt the guitar riff.  So it bums me out that U2 is blatantly trying to 'go young' with younger musicians.
4.  teh hip hop bridge between Best Thing and American Soul is cheesy.
5.  to #3 above, is the recycled chorus riff on American Soul overtly a nod to SoI's "Volcano" riff?  whatever the answer, SoI was 6 years in the making.  this album was made, then remade after Trump's election;  so basically, a riff that theoretically was kicking around for 9 years, is on the 'new' album.  if a nod, it's kinda weak.  or, if U2 just said "fark it, let's just do that demo version of 'Volcano', slightly tweak it, an voila!  new song!"  either way it sucks.

it's just an OK album.  I'm undecided on seeing the SoE tour.....I caught LA1 and Phoenix on this tour and had a blast but.....i don't know how stoked I'd be to see some of these songs and then the same 'greatest hits' set U2 has done for the past 15+ years. t he arrangments (except the key, to accomodate Bono) are exactly the same.  i really don't know if I'm going to see them again.

It's not a horrible record, but it's definitely not their best effort.

The bit about "deluxe" though... I mean... any real U2 fan is going to buy the "deluxe" edition, so, in essence, the "deluxe" edition is the "regular" edition.

yeah, it's just an extra, pfft, $4 dollars.  4 bucks or whatever for 4-5 songs.

although i did have a pedantic (me?  what?  grab my fainting couch!) argument with a guy on Twitter of how the deluxe songs shouldn't technically be included in the album's song rankings.  ultimately who cares but...yeah.

i've been listening to it pretty much nonstop almost every day since it caem out. it generally frustrates me with how thirsty it is, in terms of getting  a younger crowd.  Haim, One Direction, Lady GaGa (backing vox on 'Summer of Love').......U2 spent the second half of the 00s and all of the 10s trying in vain to attract a younger crowd.

and Love Is Bigger Than, oh my god.  what dreck!  it is like, a shiatty U2 tribute band decided to write the most cheesily over the top, saccharine sweet, schmaltzy, Big Large Bigly Important U2 Anthemtm song.  and then failed!  it's just so over the top in its U2-ness.  that song is basically, the new Tom Cruise movie with Cruise either sprinting like Usain Bolt and/or speeding away on a motorcycle.  "Ohh......godammit....this is the part when he just has to do that thing......are you or me gonna be the one to tell him, no one cares, it's just a massive ego stroke.  but godammit if we don't have this moment every godamn album/movie....."
