Step one: fire Sessions, who is unable to fire Mueller.
Step two: ???*
Step three: fire Mueller

* during confirmation, AG states "only fire Mueller for cause", then magically finds cause a week after confirmation

The problem is, that takes time. If Trump suddenly sacks Sessions and tries to put a stooge in his place, it will be totally obvious why and what he is trying to do.

I think even Trump can recognize that that may be a step too far, and will just add to the obstruction of justice charges

And even Trump must recognize that there is a real possibility that the Democrats will be in charge of the Senate either in 2018 or 2020. Any obvious obstruction is just going to make impeachment even easier.

There's obviously a lot of concern that Trump will find someone to sack Mueller in this pre-xmas period, in the hope that most people too busy to protest, and by the end of the holiday period it will be a fait accompli.

From Vox:

First, it wouldn't be as simple as firing one person. It seems that to get rid of Mueller (without a finding of genuine misconduct), Trump would also have to get rid of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - and perhaps several more Justice Department officials, until he finds one willing to carry out his order. Meaning it would get very messy.
Second, the past precedents of the Saturday Night Massacre and the Comey firing both ended up failing to squelch the respective investigations at play. Both provoked a backlash from the public and the political system, and eventually the existing investigation ended up continuing under new leadership.
So getting rid of Mueller would be enormously costly to Trump, and could well fail to end his legal problems. This is likely why White House aides are currently advising against it.
But it's entirely possible that, whether out of fear of what Mueller will turn up or simple annoyance at the investigation itself, Trump will pull the trigger anyway. And if he does so, the political system will be thrown into a major crisis.

Trump can't fire Mueller; only Rosenstein can.

So the smart thing to do wd be for Rosenstein to take a camping holiday or a tropical vacation somewhere out of cell phone coverage

There are two intermingled issues.

One, is Russia interfering with the 2016 election.

Second, is whether or not Trump team actively collude with foreign interests.

Ignore, for the time being, the second one. The first is actually more fundamental, and anyone deliberately obstructing efforts to get to the bottom of that interference is getting pretty close to treason, and that should be made clear

You missed the step where a thumb drive with every email in the Special Counsel's possession somehow ends up at the New York Times.

At this point, I'm not sure Mueller even needs official sanction to burn these treasonous clowns.

All evidence up to this point suggests there is nothing which can come out via the media that would cause the GOP to turn on Donny. If half a dozen underage girls doesn't do it, and grabbing them by the pussies is locker room talk...The GOP is in a shiatty situation, where they can't afford ANY splintering, or it's game over for their ability to reach 50%, so Donny is untouchable until the his approval drops into the teens or the Democrats can lead the impeachment, in which case they can pivot and blame D's for everything.

2017-12-18 02:22:34 AM
That's the idea.  Sessions recused himself.  Remove him, replace him with someone willing to meddle.  That person doesn't have the power to fire Mueller, but he can fire and replace the one who can.

They're that desperate now.  I can only imagine that, in even considering this overt of a justice-obstructionism ploy, it tells us that they're feeling very threatened, and very vulnerable.

Mueller has to be nipping at their balls.

2017-12-18 02:25:38 AM
Yes. Yes. Let the hate flow. Attack Jeff Sessions before firing him. Damage him politically so Doug Jones has an easier time at re-election (Sessions is the likely candidate) in 2020. Remember, use your vilest attacks as others (*cough*liberals*cough*) help Sessions fight back against  you.

Snake eat tail.

All it has to do is poison the electorate against them.

No way he realizes that.  The people surrounding him are telling him that daily, of that I have no doubt.  But he sees Mueller as the sheriff coming to arrest him, and that is the #1 threat to his freedom.  He wants someone to shoot the sheriff before he comes knocking on his door.

It's like trying to dodge the Grim Reaper in his mind, is what I'm saying.  Oddly enough, from the picture in the other thread, I think the Grim Reaper is knocking on the back door while Mueller's about to knock on the front.

Enter Donald Trump.

Thanks for helping to sort me out. You're right, he does have a tiny nutsack under his chin.

That nose looks purple to me. It's the same mouth expression Steve Bannon often makes and there's spots over top of the eyes. I thought my brain was just automapping Bannon onto Sessions, when I'm tired but have been drawing sometimes things will look like I drew them, but only for a split second.

Looking at that picture feels like I was drawing Steve Bannon in color for days then looking at a photo of Jeff Sessions to see it morph half way between the two faces then stick. I'm not that tired and I haven't been drawing Bannon.

Why do their noses look like that? Is it booze?

Nobody has the power to fire Mueller, except "for cause", and the guy in the hot seat already said "no cause", knowing that Mueller had the emails since 1 Sept.

Any idiot who tries to Bork this up after the current guy gets canned is going to find himself on a defendant's list, in front of a judge, trying to justify why he violated CFR in order to end the investigation.

If Trump fires Sessions, then what's to say that Sessions doesn't try to save his own ass and rats out Trump for any dirty dealings? He was the one who got on Trump's bandwagon from the get go and for him to be cut off from the legs after giving up his seat in the Senate (which was just lost to Jones) should piss him off to the point where he decides to play the whole "If I'm going to hell, you're coming with me" game.
