*For good coverage, check out C-SPAN, they're taking calls and it's just like this thread!*

2004-06-05 05:06:12 PM
He was actually 93 years old... why did this innacurate one get greenlighted?

Very sad, even if I disagree with him a lot.

2004-06-05 05:06:13 PM
I had a much funnier headline! Thanks for firing my dad Ronnie! Best thing you ever did!

2004-06-05 05:06:19 PM
Wow you Farkliters should see the TF page... in 30 minutes this got submitted once for every year Reagan was old and then some. Nice work, boys.

2004-06-05 05:06:22 PM
I will always remember him as the man who changed punk/hardcore music. All those songs againts him from MDC, DRI etc...

2004-06-05 05:06:29 PM
Lying right-wing neo-con poster! He was 93, not 94!

/flame on cuz I got nothin'

2004-06-05 05:06:32 PM
(brief salute) didn't like your policies, but I DO respect you. rest in peace. 93 is a good age...

2004-06-05 05:06:33 PM
Man, he was the President of my childhood. The first president I knew. And as a kid, he always seemed real nice.

2004-06-05 05:06:35 PM
Rest in peace, Mr. Reagan. Thoughts and prayers to your family and friends.

2004-06-05 05:06:37 PM
Without the X-Presidents, who will save us now??????

2004-06-05 05:06:38 PM
And now Bush, America's evilest president, can mourn the passing of America's 3rd evilest president, in the knowledge that someday, when he too, becomes old and dessicated, all his sins will be forgiven.

2004-06-05 05:06:39 PM
RIP

2004-06-05 05:06:41 PM
Love or hate his actions or policies, the man was a true leader. Godspeed, Gipper. We need more men like you.

2004-06-05 05:06:42 PM
Damn, I hope I live to be 93!

2004-06-05 05:06:43 PM
MAAAANNN.. I remember when I was a kid and someone told me he used to star in Movies, and I was Floored. Much Like I am floored right now finding out he's dead. Sheesh. Hope he enjoys the flip side.

2004-06-05 05:06:43 PM
only 3 years too late for my dead pool entry. thanks, ronnie.

2004-06-05 05:06:48 PM
being a punk in the 80's, i never did like reagan.

but my grandma has the 'long goodbye'

it is really worse than anything i have ever seen

ever. anywhere.

god's speed sir.
/never thought i would say a nice thing about him

2004-06-05 05:06:51 PM
See ya, Ron. Much as I didn't like you as a man, at least yours and Nancy's pain from that horrible disease is over.

2004-06-05 05:07:01 PM
Here's a good epitaph:

"We did not, repeat, did not trade weapons or anything else for hostages, nor will we" - President Ronald Reagan, in a live broadcast from the Oval Office on November 13, 1986.

2004-06-05 05:07:02 PM
Rest well.

2004-06-05 05:07:04 PM
Rest in peace, Gipper.

2004-06-05 05:07:13 PM
Sadly, we lost this great man years ago due to his disease. Now he's gone for good.

2004-06-05 05:07:13 PM
I guess we'll never know the truth about all those arms we sold to Iran.

2004-06-05 05:07:14 PM
The only president during my life that I even respected...

2004-06-05 05:07:15 PM
madcharlie - Neither did he ;)

2004-06-05 05:07:20 PM
Man, a president dies and we can't ever get his age right? 'Tis a sad.

2004-06-05 05:07:25 PM
You know, with the 8 billion submissions we TFers have seen in the last 20 minutes, you think they could have picked one with the right age.

All that aside, rest in peace.

Now I'm leaving before I get pissed off at all the assholes.

2004-06-05 05:07:27 PM
Love him or hate him, it's is unfortunate when someone dies and we can look back and realize he lived a full, rich life and his family is now content knowing he's no long suffering. That's all anyone can ask with a terminal illness.

2004-06-05 05:07:30 PM
Out of all the news flash submissions, why the one with the wrong age?

/alzheimer's

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Best President Evar.

2004-06-05 05:07:52 PM
Rest in Peace, Mr. President.

Anyone have a bigger image of this?

2004-06-05 05:07:52 PM
RIP Gipper. fark the Bozos.

2004-06-05 05:07:57 PM
I think the 94 refers to the number of minutes he remembered from his time in office.

2004-06-05 05:08:09 PM
I don't know about him as a guy, but one of the worst presidents ever. Socially conservative, fiscally liberal. His administration spent more in its 8 years than the country had spent in its entire 200+ years before 1981. The Iran-Contra scandals, the lies, the "I don't knows".....

Still, it's never a happy occasion to hear that anyone has died. At least he got to live a very long life, right?

2004-06-05 05:08:14 PM

I will always remember him as the man who changed punk/hardcore music. All those songs againts him from MDC, DRI etc...

I wish I had been around during that period of punk rock.

If the anti-bush crowd's best representative in the punk scene is Fat Mike, we should be scared.

2004-06-05 05:08:31 PM
Quite possibly the last *great* president.

*Great* doesn't mean that everyone agrees with you. Great means you both stand up for what you believe, have solid and informed convictions, and make a difference.

Great leaders polarize people.

RIP Ronald Reagan.

2004-06-05 05:08:35 PM
This is about as sad as when Nixon died...

2004-06-05 05:08:39 PM
He's in a better place now. Thanks for everything, Ron.

/now who's next in the trifecta?

2004-06-05 05:08:39 PM
RIP, Mr. President.

2004-06-05 05:08:47 PM
so why was he great? Factual posts only..no worship posts.

sorry he and his family had to suffer from the devastations of Parkinson's

2004-06-05 05:09:03 PM
I didn't care for many of Reagan's policies, especially his support for the aparthaid governmnet in South Africa, and he did LIE thru his dentures during Iran-Contra, but compared to Bush Lite, he was a true statesman.

RIP Gipper!

2004-06-05 05:09:10 PM
I heard that Bill Brasky ate him, and then shiat a Volkswagen.

/Bill Brasky... he's a bastard and we love him

2004-06-05 05:09:13 PM
And you just know that Bush is going to milk this for all its worth for his campaign. I wonder how tacky he's going to get this time.

Dr. Emmet Brown: Then tell me, "future boy", who is president in the United States in 1985?

Marty McFly: Ronald Reagan.

Dr. Emmet Brown: Ronald Reagan? The actor?! Who's Vice President? Jerry Lewis?

Marty McFly: What?

Dr. Emmet Brown: I suppose Jane Wyman is the first lady! And Jack Benny is secretary of the treasury! I've had enough practical jokes for one evening! Good day, future boy!

2004-06-05 05:09:37 PM
I think he got alzheimers from drinking the water in D.C.

too much lead in the water.

2004-06-05 05:09:52 PM
Great leaders bring people together: Reagan did not.

2004-06-05 05:10:00 PM
If only he'd held off until the beginning of November. That selfish bastard.

2004-06-05 05:10:01 PM
See ya later, Mr. Reagan...you'll always be in pictures...

Rest in peace, Mr. President.

2004-06-05 05:10:39 PM
If Reagan were here on Fark, he'd whip your asses like you were a bunch of commie air traffic controllers. May God rest his soul.

2004-06-05 05:10:43 PM
So much ignorance...the greatest champion of freedom, the greatest President in quite some time. It's amazing how ignorant of history and absolute Partisan people can be. No shock that the quasi-communists hate the man who brought down communism. God bless him.

2004-06-05 05:10:49 PM
He well be remembered as one of the great ones.

2004-06-05 05:10:51 PM

How old was he again?

Moooshy
You redeemed yourself for your post in another thread. I entirely agree. Alzheimers is a horrible disease. I know what it's like to see a loved one lose their mind... it's horrible.

And I'm off this thread. To most of you, thanks for being respectful to Reagan and his family (though I have to assume that at least 1/3 of you hate his guts). To the rest, go Fark yourselves.

2004-06-05 05:11:02 PM
I hope I don't go like that. What a rotten way to deteriorate and die. I really feel sorry for his family having to go through that kind of suffering, and of course I'm sure it was no fun for him either. It's almost a shame that he has been in such isolation for so long because I don't think anyone would be opposed to stem cell research if they saw firsthand how truly devastating this disease is.

PS: I'm not a total farker, but I'd be willing to bet there were a ton of submissions for this story. How did this one, with the wrong age, get selected? Half the articles I've read on the web have "93" right there in the headline. Oh well.

2004-06-05 05:11:08 PM
RIP A true patriot!!! He was the first president that I voted for. He will be missed by all who seek freedom!!!

2004-06-05 05:11:08 PM
Well, they've got about ten minutes to get the head off, or he'll be back and hungry....

2004-06-05 05:11:10 PM
good bye, Mr Reagan. You will be missed. My condolences to the Reagan family. Nancy is an incredible woman for the love and devotion she gave him during his health decline.

2004-06-05 05:11:14 PM
So long, Gipper.... we'll miss ya.

So sad to know that I hated him when he was president (I was just a kid anyway.) It wasn't until he left office and I realized that I was mainly a conservative and was able to read about some of the things he did for America that I started to admire him. Whether you are a conservative or liberal, you had to admire the way he inspired America and dealt with the cold war. Just because of winning the cold war, we are better off today. How many presidents can say that?

Farewell fellow patriot. America is still the light of the world. Thank you for helping us believe that.

2004-06-05 05:11:18 PM
I can't believe some of the comments I've read in here. What the hell is wrong with some of you? This man was one of the greatest Presidents ever (even if you're a lib, you know it's true) and he's dead. Where I come from it's disrespectful to make light of the death of someone, even if you didn't like them. Have some farkin' respect!

RIP, Mr. President.

/American by birth, Southern by the grace of God (which means I have respect for the dead).

2004-06-05 05:11:28 PM

Best President Ever.

2004-06-05 05:11:31 PM
Rest in Peace, Mr. President.

You were one of the greatest we ever had, particularly in the 20th century.

Actually, Dick Stoken (Historian of the Presidency) listed him as one of the 'Paradigm Setting Presidents' in his classification system. We are still following in his political climate.

Come to think of it, most of the greater presidents in his system (in terms of monumental achievements) were of the Republican Party/alignment of the conservative area. Knock one out to that, DNC.

2004-06-05 05:11:32 PM
We'll miss you Ronnie

2004-06-05 05:11:33 PM
To all those who are happy he is dead ... get some class. Love him or hate him, he was a good man.

2004-06-05 05:11:34 PM
i'm pretty liberal and whatnot, but reagan was the president for much of my childhood. my granddad thought the man was a saint.
i didn't think this would as sad as it is for me.

see you in another life reagan.

2004-06-05 05:11:36 PM
Here's an idea, no matter how witty a rebuttal you may have, ignore the trolls! Have some respect, people, he's another human being who just stood up for his point of view. If your point of view is different, fine, but act like mature adults and show some respect.

2004-06-05 05:11:44 PM
I shot reagan!

From the MSNBC Breaking News email alert:

"Former President Ronald Reagan has died, The Associated Press reports - Ronald Reagan, the cheerful crusader who devoted his presidency to winning the Cold War, trying to scale back government and making people believe it was "morning again in America," died Saturday after a long twilight struggle with AdzHaimer's disease. He was 93."

You'd think they'd run a spell check before blasting the alert out to the net. I guess they wanted to beat the CNN email alert (which they did by about a minute), but once again MSNBC shows how incompetent they are.

2004-06-05 05:11:47 PM
the funny thing is that fox news keeps going back and forth on the age.

plus i think its really classy of you haters out there to not even wait a couple hours before you start bashing them.

Heh heh, he DID say "well" a lot.

That's the dumbest thing I've read on this Internet this week. Congrats!

2004-06-05 05:11:50 PM
BTW...

RIP President Reagan

/best President ever

2004-06-05 05:11:59 PM
One of my first memories is of Ronald Reagan speaking to the nation after the Challenger accident. I was in middle school at the time. His words were so very comforting. So inspiring. I remember vividly how he walked down the aisle and hugged each of the family members.

I have a vague recollection of the assasination attempt. I remember "Star Wars" and AIDs being mentioned for the first time. I remember the Jelly Beans. And Nancy. I remember watching old movies and seeing him and thinking how amazing it was that he had transformed himself into an American President.

Looking back now, though the eyes of an adult, I will not say I agree with all of his policies. But, I do agree with his spirit. He was the Great Communicator, and what he communicated was the spirit of hope.

Goodbye, Ronnie. And may comfort and peace find you as you slip the surly bonds of earth and touch the sky.

2004-06-05 05:12:03 PM
May God grant you eternal peace Mr. President.

2004-06-05 05:12:04 PM
some of you assholes should get run over by cement mixers.

RIP Ronnie.

2004-06-05 05:12:05 PM
Hey Republicans,

Remember how you got your panties in a wad because of the enthusiastic Democratic crowd at Paul Wellstone's memorial? Just remember how "distasteful" you found that while you're planning the biggest Republican circle-jerk in history.

We know you'll make this tasteful and understated.

/yeah, right

Great leaders polarize people.

Huh??? Great leaders BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER. That's the idea of leadership.

2004-06-05 05:12:57 PM
I didn't like the bastard one bit. Still, he was our President, he did what he thought was best, and he didn't get to enjoy being a well-loved (by some or many) ex-President.

What a sad, sad way to end up your life, a lost mind after a lifetime of work.

Anybody, left or right, who doesn't say a little prayer for the man is a total SOB.

2004-06-05 05:13:07 PM
Be nice people...

I was a rabid republican in the Reagan years, then I wised up...

I feel bad that his family facilitated his existence long after he was living... God speed Mr. President.

Reagan was the president of my childhood,,, which makes me feel old like you others.

It's so insane to even think about a candidate pulling 49 states in a re-election campaign nowadays.

Great leaders bring people together:

Not true. Great leaders polarize people. Sorry, just the way it is.

We don't live in a civilization that "works together". We compete and become better through that. That's how we survive.

And our great leaders mirror that.

Great leaders don't bring people together, because in reality people don't come together.

2004-06-05 05:13:42 PM
God Bless Ronald Reagan!

I'm not religious at all, and neither was he, but he was the kind of man who made you believe in good and evil, and there was a God who wanted good to triumph.

It's a sad day everywhere in the free world.

He signed my graduation diploma. Reagan did the best with all that he was given, may he rest in peace. Having said that, I still do not like the way he called in the troops to confront us at UC.

2004-06-05 05:14:11 PM
RIPB Reagan, godspeed. You may have been contraversial in a time when the world was 1 button push from being eliminated, but if there is one thing thing you did was held your ground. That in itself changed the world.

People from the 50's until the 80's lived in the constant shadow of the mushroom cloud. How many children woke up in a cold sweat imagining everything around them and everyone the knew was destroyed? The Early Warning system could mean a thousand missiles heading in your direction, instead of some hail that might dent your car.

Ronald Reagan won the Cold War. He bet that American industry could outproduce and outspend the Russians, and it worked. We have a whole generation that can actually go a day without thinking that tomorrow, the ground they stand on could be a glassy plain.

2004-06-05 05:14:30 PM
BTW, he had zip to do with the collapse of the USSR. It was well on its way before-hand. We can thank Brezhnev for that.

2004-06-05 05:14:32 PM
Dead president better not cut into the Belmont stakes. Go Smarty!

2004-06-05 05:14:37 PM
And since when did dying make anyone a hero?

IMHO:
Dying for a cause can be heroic, but the actual heroic part of it is putting your life at risk for a cause. The death itself isn't heroic because it isn't something you controlled (unless you knew you were going to die, and that is the ultimate sacrifice). Thus, if two people do the same things except one dies and the other doesn't, they are both just as heroic. We hear about the ones who died, not the ones who risked their lives and lived.

2004-06-05 05:14:40 PM
To all those calling him a cocksucker and such, I hope your grandparents go through what his family went through.

2004-06-05 05:14:48 PM
RIP Gipper. The scoreboard will always read...

Reagan: 1
Communism: 0

Thanks, Mr. President.

Old Mother Reagan
And her crew
Took away
From me and you
I hope she goes far away
She better go far away
Y'know it ain't right
When it's all wrong
This is the Old Mother Reagan
Protest song
Old Mother Reagan
She's so dumb
She's so dangerous
How come...
Old Mother Reagan went to heaven
But at the pearly gates
She was stopped!

And so the passing of an incredibly powerful and respected man. Today is a day to put politics aside...or reinforce silly stereotypes. Fark on, farkers. My thought are with the Reagans today.

It's times like these I like to ponder the afterlife, and I take comfort knowing that Ronald Reagan is probably being assraped in Hell by the people killed by the terrorists he supported.

Er, what he went thgough.

2004-06-05 05:16:34 PM
I was 13 when he became president, and he was such a breath of fresh air after Carter. Then the way he handled the attempt on his life was just so impressive to me. I know I was just a stupid kid at the time, but he really inspired me with his optimism and I became a better American because of it. Of course the luster wore off in his second term, and I became more politically "aware", but that first term of his was just something else. I didn't think I would feel so oddly sad about his death, but I do. He was a pretty cool guy. Rest in Peace Ron.

2004-06-05 05:16:39 PM
The cult-of-personality-esque vibe on this thread is pretty creepy.

Ronald Reagan was a man. Not a god. Not a devil.

He didn't destroy communism. He didn't destroy America.

Get a grip on yourselves, people!

2004-06-05 05:16:51 PM
Of course, one of my favorite memories is where he mistakenly spoke into a open microphone saying "I have just signed legislation outlawing Russia forever. We begin bombing in 5 minutes".

Just trying to inject a little humor here.

RIP Ronnie

Good man? If you call helping to blacklist fellow actors who pissed him off as COMMIES during the wonderful heyday of the McCarthy era as being a good man, then you are seriously farked in the head.

Kinda funny, man sold his soul to the christian devil, and the way he has to pay the devil back is to have his mind rotting away so that any glory he may have felt is erased by the scourge of Alzhiemers, which, ironically, Stem Cell research could have found a cure for by now.

Actually, it's ironic. Don't ya think?

As a Canadian who grew up during the Reagan presidency, I can make this observation: whatever your opinion of the man, he definitely jazzed some life into your country, at a time when malaise seemed to dominate every facet of American life. I didn't agree with everything he did or said, but I can respect the man.

The whole idea of Reagan the Hero President boldly winning the Cold War is based on an essential lie, and that lie was that the Soviet Union was a powerful, functional nation that Reagan defeated. By the time we was President, change was already in the air. People were not going to remain passively under the will of extreme Communist asshats forever. He was President during the end of the Cold War, and he may have had a hand in the way everything played out, and I'm not saying he was a vile, evil man or anything, but I just dislike this inaccurate, random hero worship the guy always gets.

Great leaders don't bring people together, because in reality people don't come together.

So Napolean and Hitler kinda sucked as leaders since they united their nation?

Andrew Johnson did a great job of polarizing the US after the civil war...great leader?

Sorry, great leaders unite their people (often at the expense of other nations/peoples).

It's always sad to hear that a former world leader such as himself has died, whether you like his politics or not. PE Trudeau garnered the same mixed sentiment in Canada when he died, but everyone had to agree that, love him or hate him, he made his mark. And so has Reagan. Hats off.

Before I go through all the comments, I just want to wish the Gipper Godspeed. He was always my favorite President and I think always will be. R.I.P.

Ronald "Ronnie Raygun" Reagan

My best Reagan memory...

11 Aug 1984 Not realizing that his weekly radio address is already on the air, President Ronald Reagan quips into his live microphone: "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

2004-06-05 05:19:51 PM
May God bless his family and friends and provide comfort in their time of need.

Good man? If you call helping to blacklist fellow actors who pissed him off as COMMIES during the wonderful heyday of the McCarthy era as being a good man

I can understand the fear of communism in the 70's and 80's being viewed as silly. But this was the 50's. We didn't know what we were in for.

Hindsight is 20/20. But think for a second that the Cold War did erupt into a real war. And a nasty war, with tens of millions dead on each side.

We would now be looking at McCarthy and his cronies as *almost* heros... and only *almost* because they didn't go far enough.

Put things in context, then comment.

2004-06-05 05:21:01 PM
In November 1986, it was disclosed that United States had been selling arms to Iran. Reagan went on television and vehemently denied that any such sale had occurred. He retracted this statement a week later, insisting that the sale of weapons had not been an arms-for-hostages deal. In March 1987, Reagan was forced to issue a second retraction, admitting that the deal had been arms-for-hostages after all.

Shipping arms to Iran violated an arms embargo against that country, and bargaining with terrorists violated Reagan's campaign promise never to do so.

Just sayin'. That's just one of the Reagan-era scams. You types posting "hero" stuff are amusing us with your ignorance.

Are we all over the first shock? Can someone then explain this to a non-US farker: I always had the impression that >99% of Americans thought that Reagan was the greatest president ever (because he beat the commie bastards etc. (he didn't BTW. Gorbachev did it for him)).
But when I read this thread, I am starting to doubt this. So, why do you guys hate Reagan so much?

I am deeply sadden by all of the negative comments. If you know your history, you will know that this is one of the greatest presidents of the past 50 years. Those 25 or under have no understanding of what this president did for you. You never had to face the thoughts of nuclear holocaust from Russia. Re-read your history before you tarnish the name of one of the greatest US PATRIOTS!!!

I was a rabid republican in the Reagan years, then I wised up...

Me, too. He was the first president I voted for in 1980 until I saw it was all a bunch of lies and red ink.

That said, he was a huge part of my life and a big part of the last half of the 20th century. Another part of our collective past gone forever...

I don't think any words I might have to say praising the man or his accomplishments would add to the discussion. I can only point out the fact that all the right people seemed to hate the guy.

Face it - he beat communism and exposed the flaws inherent to that philosophy in a way that they'll never be able to recover from. For that, he's hated by some fanatical asshats.

But for the rest of us, especially those of us who were fortunate to have served in the military while he was CIC, he was a great President.

God bless and Rest in Peace.

Why does he get credit for "winning" the Cold War? Just because communism collapsed during Reagan's presidency doesn't mean he had anything to do with it. I derive no pleasure from the man's death, but he was not the hero that some of the Reagan-worshippers are making him out to be.

A great man and an excellent president.

2004-06-05 05:28:24 PM
Great leaders WIN BATTLES. They certainly don't unite a nation, and they don't polarize it. A great leader is a WINNER.
Forget the Cold War. Reagan brought this nation's economy out of the toilet (though he didn't exactly consider the future... but truth be told, future politicians haven't really cared either).

I think anyone who says all his policies were horrible, or all were great, doesn't know how to think for him/herself. He had his ups and downs. So does every President.
Ronald shouldn't be considered with the likes of Lincoln... but he did his part to benefit this nation.
I thought Bill Clinton (I'm just tossing this name out, as he's the only other recent two-term President), overall, did a better job as President. However, Clinton can't touch Reagan's importance to this nation's history. He cannot touch the legacy Ronald left. There are a handful of Presidents who can.

2004-06-05 05:28:26 PM
Yeah its an age thing too. If you were alive and voting in the 80's you got a much broader view of what was up. The cold war was expensive as hell, and no one thought it was going to end with anything other than a bomb. But it did end, and it was great, and now we have more problems that in a lot of ways make those look small. In the early 80s and before getting wiped by a nuke from a foreign nation was more of a reality to most than it is now. Getting us out of that without loosing a continent was no small issue. The fall out of all those years of madness is still screwing things up today. If you were there or if you read up on it you can see how we are still pulling away from cold war logic, politics, and agression. The middle east and Africa and South America are only now starting to change, and its nasty and will take more years than most of us have to unfark. Regan got the ball rolling though, and yeah, there were plenty who thought ending it and moving on was not a good idea then but he did it anyway.

Bye bye Uncle Ronnie.

That's old.

*sigh*

downstairs perfectly summarized this thread...

We're here together because a great man has died. Whether you agreed with his politics or not, you cannot debate that he served his country with conviction and character, and should be honored as such. Despite my many disagreements with Jimmy Carter's politics, I would be still be saying that if he had died.

That said...

I'm glad that President Reagan has finally died. His continued existence must have been an unimaginable misery for both himself and his family, to see him go from being the "Great Communicator" to a man who can't even remember his own name.

Rest in peace, sir.

2004-06-05 05:28:53 PM
Godspeed Gipper.

George W. Bush is doing everything he can to make a mockery of your values, but we'll stop it in six months.

Rest in Peace Mr. President. I would say more, but this is not the forum to truly honor your legacy.

Sam Donaldson just said that on ABC. I swear.

"We're all Republicans today, sir" is what the surgeon replied when Ronald Reagan asked him if he was a Republican or a Democrat as he lay on the operating table after being shot. It has nothing to do with propaganda, ABC or FOX. I'll let you get back to your bong now...

So true, it needed repeating.

Amen.

My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing will begin in five minutes.

2004-06-05 05:30:01 PM
But for the rest of us, especially those of us who were fortunate to have served in the military while he was CIC, he was a great President.

Yeah, all those blank checks he signed for the Pentagon (and GOP contributors) were real healthy for the country.

/sarcasm

2004-06-05 05:30:22 PM
This means I won't have anything to watch on TV for day. All sorts of hoopla over a man who's truly greatest attribute to society was starring with a monkey. I can't wait until next week when no one remembers him or his so called legacy.

/saw his "policies" first-hand and they sucked

2004-06-05 05:30:22 PM
Great, so now we must endure the stupendous redundancy of all major news outlets covering the same "story" for the next few days. His public service ended 15 years ago, perhaps the media should consider covering something relevant.

P.S. I'm sure that whatever part of his mind that was intact welcomed death. People who claim to care about the man should celebrate.

2004-06-05 05:30:28 PM
Politicization is imminent, unfortunately.

2004-06-05 05:30:28 PM
You all shold turn on Fox news. They're giving him the biggest posthumous wang-sucking ever. Pitiful.

2004-06-05 05:30:31 PM
bbwh,

Those 25 or under have no understanding of what this president did for you.

Let me guess. You happen to be 26. Sorry, dude, but your age has very little to do with understanding of events.

I was born in 78 and remember very little of Reagan's presidency. It's only after going back and reading about it that I realize how much he truly did for our country.

2004-06-05 05:30:42 PM
Nice. Fox is having a phone conversation with Falwell.

He'll probably blame Reagan's death on the decline of morality in America. American moral decay already killed 3000 on 9/11 so it's not much of a leap to blame the sodomites for Ron's death.

2004-06-05 05:30:46 PM
Break out the barbeque honey, it's party time!
Good riddance, damn politicians need to die off quicker.

It's sickening to me that so many would speak ill of the dead this way. You guys who are doing this are piss poor ambassadors for the progressive side. This is reminding me of the Memorial Day thread which got trashed by the same childish asshats. Just sad.

Treat the man exactly how you hope others would treat Clinton if he had died today. The Golden Rule is still a great way to live.

You deserve a break from the attacks of the liberals.

2004-06-05 05:21:15 PM Q. Steltanus

As one who lived as an adult through his tenure, this is a difficult question to answer. He had great faults (the huge deficit being the most glaring of them), but his optimism and his sense of being right (regardless of the empirical truth of that) was absolutely infectious. He was what this country needed at the time of his election, even thought the consequences have been steep.

2004-06-05 05:32:19 PM
May God bless his family during this time of loss. And may God bless this country!!!

For non-US Farkers wondering why some of us were not Reagan fans:

He created a massive national debt that has since been tripled by President Bush, money that our children and our children's children will spend decades paying back.

That reason alone is why most of the anti-Reagan faction exists. And, frankly, it's a pretty good reason. I have yet to hear from anyone where that money's going to come from without a massive destabilization of our currency.

2004-06-05 05:33:09 PM

The best president of the modern age. Nobody else could have served America and the world in the capacity and with the effect that Ronald Reagan did.

To those of you farkers too young to have lived through it...the US was a country full of self-loathers, doubters and was generally rudderless. Reagan made it okay to be patriotic again. Made it okay to say the US is #1 again. That ability to swerve the mood of the entire nation is underestimated.

God Bless America...whether you liked him or not...his service to this country will assume a prominent place in American history.

And we are very very lucky it worked out the way it did. It was incredibly irresponsible to bankrupt a nuclear power knowing full well it would destabilize the way it did, creating tons of small, broke, income-less nuclear entities. We were so incredibly lucky.

Thank you Mr. President for your service to the country.

When I joined the Navy in 1980, the Soviets had invaded Afghanistan, had shipped Cubans to Angola and Ethiopia, and were involving themselves with revolutionary groups in Central America.

It was a sad world. The liberals said we had to cooperate with the Soviets, that they were a fact of life that wasn't going to go away.

But then the Great Communicator came in, with a new vision. He didn't think we had to let the bad guys rule half the world. He said they were an Evil Empire and should be treated as such.

In my case, I could personally see how he restored the pride and luster to the Armed Forces that had been so hollowed out in the Seventies.

Thank you Mr. Reagan for making America strong.
Thank you Mr. Reagan for making the changes that let us defeat the evil known as Soviet Communism.
Thank you for your service.

God Bless Nancy and the kids.

I may think he was an evil person,

but, damnit, he was a republican's republican. And I would have voted for him.

At least he was intelligent, had a good staff, and got shiat done. Granted, EVIL stuff. But at least not everything he said was a blatant lie, hell, he would have just come out and said "let's bomb iraq because we never finished in there, the farkers irritate me".

/fond memories of Lybia

Then again, constantly being afraid that WWIII was around the corner kinda spoiled my farked up childhood.

And, to elaborate on the CHARACTER of the man, Downstairs, he gave officials list of actors who he did not like. Not actors that could have been commies, only those that he had an ajenda against.

THAT... is evil.

So yes, if there is a christian hell, he's there. Oh yeah.

Or did you forget about the arms deal that pretty much secured Regan's presidency?

Just Say No? Remember THAT gem from the regan era? War on Drugs? Thanks, Ronald!

He is consered to be the best president of all time by some, but they forget to complete the sentence: because he was an actor.

But, as I ramble, perhaps there was a cunning fox in that small mind of his.

2004-06-05 05:39:27 PM
FDR was the greatest President ever.
The people who say that are the same people who probably say that Reagan was the worst President ever.

Here's a hint: Both assumptions are wrong.

2004-06-05 05:39:30 PM
Just for the record, screw Clinton and his self-promoting, triangulating bullshiat. Can't stand the guy, but I'm also on record as diametrically opposed to the post-1950s strain of Republican pig trough-filler. But I won't cheer his death either.

I disagree with almost everything Reagan did as president. A few things I heartily approve of, and I choose to think of those things today. In a week or so, I'll go right back to ripping him for his numerous evils. But this day is for his family, not him. His deeds will stand scrutiny for the rest of our civilization, but today his family lost a father and a husband they loved dearly.

Respect for the dead doesn't mean you have to speak well of him or paint over the differences you had with him. It's about understanding the pain and loss his loved ones feel. Those of you who have had someone dear to you die know what I'm talking about.

Yeah, it's fark, and it's by nature irreverent, and we have asshats who will say any stupid, immature, or insulting thing. On pretty much any other day, or on pretty much any other subject, I would probably be one of those asshats. Even so, brawling in the presence of death is one of the most disrespectful things humans can do, regardless of time, place, or political context.

So leave the man and his family alone for one day. His death doesn't redress any of the wrongs he committed. It only hurts the people he loved. Don't rejoice in their suffering.

/soapbox

That said, my thoughts go out to his family.

To all the people who were compelled to begin their post with "I never liked him, but..." or chose the occasion to try to start a debate about Iran/Contra yet again, or chose this of all times to bash the current administration:

I feel deeply sorry for you. I would hate to go through life being such a bitter partisan asshole that I would see the death of a great leader from an opposition party as a chance to take another political jab for "my team." I sincerely hope you each find some kind of peace in your lives.

As for President Reagan, I knew we had heard the last of him when Nancy delivered that final letter a few years ago, but I always hoped we would hear from a lucid Ronald Reagan one more time. My condolences to the entire Reagan family, but as when my Grandfather finally passed away under similar circumstances, there's actually a little bit of relief that the suffering from this horrible disease is finally over, and the man is finally at rest. Goodbye, Mr. President. See you in the next life.

Reagan was often reviled for the massive deficits and growing debt that were a result of his defense spending and Congress' entitlement programs.

It's valuable to remember back to the world of 1980 when he was elected. A lot of his appeal was the idea that he could "beat the commies." At the time, I remember thinking that a nuclear war was inevitable -- I thought it was a matter of when, not if.

Reagan wasn't elected to keep the debt down -- the people wanted the threat of a Soviet nuclear attack out from over their heads.

He delivered. RIP, Mr. President.

i do agree that it's ridiculous to bring up hell and damnation and good riddance, etc, and that people who do so are just immature miserable beings... but enough of this "leave his family alone" stuff. his family doesn't read the fark message boards on the DAY their patriarch dies. c'mon.

Regardless of his Presidency, you're making fun of a national and generational icon who happen to be a really nice guy as his family is mourning his death.

At least have some respect for his family you damn hate-mongers.

I'm out of here. I will not listen to this hate any longer.

Q. Steltanus

Because some people will talk shiat because they can. Reagan was one of our greatest Presidents because his ability to pitch the impossible and make it sound possible was unmatched. In this sense he was a lot like Lincoln - given an impossible situation no one liked and making cooperation possible in order to end it. He's know here as "the Great Communicator" because he spoke to both parties and willed them by force of character to co-operate. Prior to him, Carter, we had a President who had all the priorities right but was unable to enact them because of a lot of infighting and fallout over Nixon, and the fact that Carter was a reasonable person who listened too much. Whenever we get a President who makes declaritive statements (Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall) we get a lot of dissention and crankiness out of the lefty crowd because declaritive statements are frightening as hell. But people trusted Reagan not to fark things up worse than they were and he constantly reassured people through public presence and statements that everything was going to be allright, and it was. He was also known as "Uncle Ronny" mostly because he came across as your older relative who knew best, which is nuts on the face of it, but something he carried off.

And he stayed out of nastiness and back biting and the political horseshiat of name calling by using humor to defuse situations. I think Sam Donaldson (his chief antagonistic reporter) was in love with Reagan because Reagan always reposnded to criticism with humor and affection. He would not allow you to hate him.

Yeah and its sad because I wonder if we will ever get someone that talented again.

Stop poking at each other please. I'm not fast enough to keep up with it and you just cause more people to jump on the bandwagon

2004-06-05 05:43:52 PM
I served under him as Commander in Chief, and am saddened by this news. God Bless You Mr President. Most of those happy about his passing probably weren't even around to remember or be affected by him...You should all be ashamed that you can find happiness in a death...

2004-06-05 05:43:53 PM
Soon, a democratic left-wing liberal will die. And the Republican right-wing farkers will mourn. They won't trash the name of the dead while they're still cooling on the morgue slab.

Jesus,

Where did you read about it?

In books. Believe it or not, I'm literate :)

Muti,

I'd say that probably 90% of international political maneuvers depend on luck.

Regardless of how it turned out the way it did, Reagan did what he felt to be the right thing for the right reasons. I respect that immensely.

On that note, I'm off to have a beer or three in memory.

I have to say this. People who are filling this thread with Anti-Reagan hate speech, I'm sure you all have personal grievances against Reagan. Most people here, I'm sure, are upset that he made the biggest push for the end of the Soviet Union. So many of you, mourned the end of an oppressive regime that brought poverty and suffering. And you mourned it more than you'll ever mourn this man.

You insult a man whose SDI program has brought us the technologies which may, when applied, bring us vehicles such as hovercars and extremely high-speed package delivery, not to mention how it can innovate space itself.

The anti-Reagan folks in this thread seem to have a bit of a liberal bent. What happened to tolerance and kindness? Why is it okay to be a hateful asshat when it's someone who disagrees with you? It's not like he was collecting childrens ears and eating babies at 93, so you can't say you're celebrating the end of someone evil. His "reign of terror" (low taxes and economic growth...the evil!!!) has been long over. Don't you have any compassion for a man who SUFFERED a SLOW LONG PAINFUL DEATH at the hands of a crippling BRAIN DISEASE?

If Reagan's in hell, he's high-fiving that warmonger JFK and saving a seat for you.

2004-06-05 05:44:37 PM
Folks, the man is dead. Give him some peace and respect, give his family some consideration.

I'm as left winged as anyone, but there's a dead President, one who lead our country - right or wrong (mostly wrong) - and he was a remarkable man in his way.

Give him a little nod and a small prayer today. Cuss his politics tomorrow.

A lot of Middle and South American's really believe (and they have reasons to) that this guy was the antichrist. 150 years from now when they study the demise of America as a superpower they will point to his Presidency as the slippery slope we began to slide down.

Allbeitmine

my maths was never that great but doesn't that mean he was voted into office when he was 73 and was still president at 78???

i mean. geez... i don't trust people that old behind the wheel of a car.

In all seriousness, his age was considered a large issue. However, he was able to successfully downplay it. For example, in the 1984 election, he playfully referred to his 56 year old opponent as youthful and inexperienced.

When he was later questioned before a Federal Grand Jury on his part in the Iran-Contra scandal, most of his answers boiled down to "I don't remember." Many people thought that this was essentially a copout, to avoid having to either perjure himself or admit that he broke the law (his diary contains an entry saying that he agreed to sell anti-tank missles to the Iranians). Now, however, you often hear people saying that it might have been due to the early stages of Alzheimer's.

They most certainly would not do that. When is the last time you've listened? Hannity even said this very week that he had nothing against Clinton personally, it was his policies he couldn't stand. Limbaugh has attended parties with the Clinton's.

There would be a few, but the right is nowhere near as uncivlized as the kind, gentle folks you read here bashing a poor man with Alzheimers who died after such a full life for no ohter reason than blind political hate. shonblatt and weaver,

You obviously jump on any chance to bash the left. If you read the thread, some liberals bashed Reagan, some said their respects, and some said both. If Clinton died you know some conservatives would be bashing him. Don't think the left is any more disrespectful than the right. Unless, of course, it comes down to pure honesty: the right would quickly lie to sugar coat an issue. Now I'm speaking your language. Happy?

I seriously dislike Reagan and think he was a terrible president, but it pisses me off when other liberals point to that quotation as some sort of evidence for his evilness. I don't care who you are, that was damned funny.

I'm betting peoples hate of him is emotional, so here's a list of philosophy statements, let me know if you disagree.

"peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever."

"there is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesnt mind who gets the credit."

"Putting people first has always been Americas secret weapon. Its the way weve kept the spirit of our revolutions alivea spirit that drives us to dream and dare, and take great risks for a greater good."

"America is too great for small dreams."

"[N]o arsenal or no weapon in the arsenals of the world is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women."

"I hope that when you're my age you'll be able to say, as I have been able to say: we lived in freedom, we lived lives that were a statement, not an apology."

What is wrong about that? That freedom is good, we should live our lives with meaning and that we can accomplish great things. Oh, you don't like him saying that because he's a republican.

but seriously, i feel bad taking up space about a dead man with this partisan shiat. let me say something positive:

it's sad to see a president die, regardless of party, but the bright spot here is that his suffering is over, much like my own grandfather's was when he passed at the ripe old age of 99. sometimes it's the right time, and i hope his family finds consolation in that.

Those of you farking hippies who just love to dwell on the "lagest deficit ever" mantra concerning President Reagan's terms need to remember that it is Congress, specifically the House of Representatives, who has the so-called "power of the purse" when it comes to Federal budgets. During President Reagans eight terms in office, all but one of his budgets were declared DOA (that's dead on arrival for you free-love types) by the Democratic majority in control of the House. They saw the HUGE gains into the Federal treasury as a result of the massive Reagan tax cuts and couldn't keep their greasy paws out of the cookie jar, thus resulting in deficit spending on pork-barrel projects. I'm sure the NEA-controlled spinster who taught your 11th grade US history class left that part out.

What makes you think that I would make such an excuse? Where did I mention either Clinton? What in my post was an attack against Reagan? I admit there was a bit that might have portrayed him somewhat negatively, but what of it was not merely cold hard fact? And even if there was something in my post that was an attack, why do you assume that my head is up the ass of either Clinton?

Q. Steltanus

He was a republican. On this site, sometimes that's all it takes. When Clinton goes (or whoever the next democrat to go will be), the republicans will come on and start doing the same bloody thing. Works both ways. Not taking any sides, just calling it as I see it. I'm sure that will get me flamed, but I got tired of caring.

I was one when Reagan was elected, and spent half of his presidency on an Air Force base in England (Mildenhall to be exact), so I can't comment on the Iran-Contra (interesting Konami Code, by the way), or on practically any of his administration. All I know is that he was a former president who passed on, and the media will talk at length about it for the next few days (love him or hate him, you're gonna hear a lot about him). I offer my condolences to his wife and kids.

[Your post comes off as arrogant and gaudy.]

....says the guy reveling in the death of another. It's often been said that you can tell a great deal about someone by what (or whom) they hate.

I'm not proud of Fark today based on some of what I've read on this thread today.

To Gorgeous Orifice and his ilk: Thank you for mourning his death. I meant to say that in my last post, my bad.

To the others: You make me weep for our country. You've stopped thinking and all you do now is feel.....feel hate for 'the other side' regardless of factual input.

It's people like you who will inevitably take a shot at Bush once (if) he is reelected. Mark my words.

Yep. I think it's fitting, although having CVN-77 named the "George H.W. Bush" is arther wishy-washy.

I am so tired of people biatching about Reagan's position on AIDS in this thread.

As much as the homosexual lobby would like to convince this country otherwise, the vast, vast majority of AIDS cases in this country are in homosexuals or IV drug users, or people who had sex with them.

In nearly all cases, it's preventable.

Without checking the numbers, I'd say a vast majority of the ships named after people are named after men. Every ship I've been assigned to or dealt with was referred to as she.

Soon, a democratic left-wing liberal will die. And the Republican right-wing farkers will mourn. They won't trash the name of the dead while they're still cooling on the morgue slab.

Trashing of the dead is almost inevitable here. There were nasty comments when Mother Teresa died. There were hardly any when Mr. Rogers died, although I'm sure that there were a few. The mods probably removed most of them.

It's darned hard to find a public figure whose life is universally admired. Reagan made a lot of important decisions and set a lot of important policies and some of them worked out well and some of them turned out to be huge mistakes and you'll never get everyone to agree which were which.

Godspeed, Mr. President.

Interesting question. I've never thought of it before, but I've never heard of a ship called "he" so it must be always "she". Although you could get around it by being careful... for example:
Instead of saying "She is pulling into Norfolk" you could say "The ship is pulling into Norfolk" or "The Reagan is pulling into Norfolk."

Liberal revisionism of history is doing its best to wipe out all references to the cold war. So much of where we are today and what we did yesterday was because we stood in the way of Soviet domination for over 40 years. Reagan became the resolute rock upon which they broke themselves.

General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

I remember when the Challenger exploded, I was around 8 years old and saw it live on TV.

President Regan went on television, said some words and made a scared little girl feel better.

As I grew older, I found myself disagreeing with a lot of his policies, politics, etc. But I still remembered how the "great communicator" made everyone feel better after a national tragedy.

For that, I will always thank him. I hope you find some peace now, Mr. President, and I'm glad you are not suffering anymore.

2004-06-05 06:12:59 PM
I don't care who you are; Democratic, Republican, 3rd party, whatever. No matter how much you dislike a president, rejoicing in their death is not funny, regardless. All of you out there putting Reagan down, fine, do whatever the hell you farking want because that's your constitutional right, but if that's what you want to do, just realize that you're making yourself look like a total jackass in front of a lot of other people in this thread. This post will more than likely go unnoticed; fine, I frankly do not care. But to read through this thread is becoming disgusting from the sheer volume of hate heaped upon a dead man. Things like this are exactly why I hate political parties and party lines; all of them are just a bunch of people who will fight with the other group regardless of who's president, what the economy's like, etc., because someone will always find fault in another. I don't like Clinton, no, but that doesn't mean I'm going to come to the inevitable thread about his death and parade around chanting "Hooray, Clinton is dead!"

I'm off to watch the Belmont now.

Thank God he finally died. I'm not dissing him, I'm intimately familiar with the disease, having spent years in the trenches watching my grandmother eighteen hours a day. It's obviously been sucking the life out of Nancy for years now, and I'm glad she'll finally get some rest.

In the early stages, you can't leave those people alone for a second or they'll start a fire. Then they don't know who you are. Then they're just screaming all day. Of course, it's different for everyone, but it's never pretty.

RIP, at long last, Mr. Reagan. Now Nancy will have more time and energy to devote to promoting stem cell research, that perhaps future generations won't have to deal with this nightmare even among diseases.

2004-06-05 06:14:50 PM
a blessing that his suffering has ended. Alzheimers is a horrible thing, regardless of who it affects.

However, the disease does not erase who he was. I've seen defender of freedom and great leader mentioned..It would ring as much more true if he had honestly cared about ALL americans. How, i wonder, would his last years have been if he'd had the healthcare of one of the many people he put out of a job?

as a person who suffered, i wish him well. As reagan specifically, i say good riddance to bad republicans.

I wish I could say I feel for him but I don't really. I feel for his family who are experiencing the loss. I remember him as President and I never really liked him. I remember being younger and hating him because of his stance on drug testing made it harder for me to get a job cause I was a weedhead at the time.
The other thing Reagan should be remembered for is being the first president to beat the "zero factor". (before him, every president elected in a year that ended in zero had died while in office!)

to be accurate, liberal revision did not take winning the cold war out of the republicans hands and put it into gorbachev's. read condoleeza rice's excellent book(s) on the collapse of the GDI and gorbachev's shifty reactionary politics. gorbachev really DID bring down the USSR, it's no slight to reagan or bush or anybody else really, it's just an ironic fact that has plenty of evidence and analysis (from the RIGHT more than the left) to back it up.

Greatest President Ever.

Over lunch today I asked Ed Meese about one of Reagan's favorite jokes. "The pony joke?" Meese replied. "Sure I remember it. If I heard him tell it once, I heard him tell it a thousand times."

The joke concerns twin boys of five or six. Worried that the boys had developed extreme personalities -- one was a total pessimist, the other a total optimist -- their parents took them to a psychiatrist.

First the psychiatrist treated the pessimist. Trying to brighten his outlook, the psychiatrist took him to a room piled to the ceiling with brand-new toys. But instead of yelping with delight, the little boy burst into tears. "What's the matter?" the psychiatrist asked, baffled. "Don't you want to play with any of the toys?" "Yes," the little boy bawled, "but if I did I'd only break them."

Next the psychiatrist treated the optimist. Trying to dampen his out look, the psychiatrist took him to a room piled to the ceiling with horse manure. But instead of wrinkling his nose in disgust, the optimist emitted just the yelp of delight the psychiatrist had been hoping to hear from his brother, the pessimist. Then he clambered to the top of the pile, dropped to his knees, and began gleefully digging out scoop after scoop with his bare hands. "What do you think you're doing?" the psychiatrist asked, just as baffled by the optimist as he had been by the pessimist. "With all this manure," the little boy replied, beaming, "there must be a pony in here somewhere!"

"Reagan told the joke so often," Meese said, chuckling, "that it got to be kind of a joke with the rest of us. Whenever something would go wrong, somebody on the staff would be sure to say, "There must be a pony in here somewhere.'"

well, i get up in the morning and i have some toast

I do some volunteer work with a lady who is 80-some years old. She told me recently that she had known Ronald Reagan many years ago. She mentioned this just sort of casually in the midst of another story, as old people seem to at times. I said, "did you just say you used to know Reagan?" She said yes and proceeded to tell me a couple stories and said that he was plainly one of the nicest men he had ever met. She said that she never knew him to tell a lie and did not think he was capable of such a thing. It was weird hearing such things after having been a child of the 80's and developing kind of a microscopic chip on my shoulder regarding his presidency. But hearing her say those things just kind of made me see him in a different light, I guess. He's nothing more or less than human. I believe he led an amazing life. RIP.

Rest in Peace, Mr. President.

Though I'm not remotely with the camp that believes he was the greatest president (now there's some revisionist history) -- Reagan had his moments.

May Reagan's death warm the GOP's hearts to stem cell research and treatment.

I just heard that his body will be on public display in DC.

Do you have marble in your home or place of work? Loaded with Uranium...

Excessive flourescent lighting? Gamma radiation...

Do you use tobacco? Serious Beta emitter...

Smoke detectors in your home? Each comes wth a can of Americium-241...

Whole grains, beer, or rich meat to your liking? Hope you like high doses of Potassium-41 and Cesium-137...

You get more of a dose in your own home than I ever did on Enterprise.

Yeah, I know... I was just trying to be funny.

There's a story that a lot of people don't know about, even he wouldn't admit it. He actually sent a $300 personal check to a poor single mother who had sent him a letter about welfare cuts. When she didn't cash it, he called to ask what was wrong. She said, "I framed it!" He sent her another check and told her, "You'd better cash this one!"

2004-06-05 06:25:00 PM
Never agreed with his political position on anything, but I have to admire his disntinctly American character, representative of an era, having all the strengths and weaknesses of this paradoxical democratic experiment. For many he represented hope, and for many others he demonstrated the limitations of ideology. One of the few times my father showed emotion was when Reagan was shot. It was then I realized the depth of what he represented to that generation.

Only funny comment in this entire thread. Congratulations.

I grew up under President Reagan. Our family thought he was alright. Of course in a military family, you'd better...I had a happy childhood during those years...I came out just fine.

Regardless of his position, his family suffered right along with him. I hope their day today is quiet, restful, and with peace.

All politics aside, I do hope that Stem Cell research is further explored for eventual treatments and possible cures. Some of you have every idea what it is like to watch your loved one die by inches, some of you don't--but one day you might.

RIP Gipp.

Because Vietnam was not a declared war, the veterans are not even eligible for the G.I. Bill of Rights with respect to education or anything.
Ronald Reagan, in "Newsweek", 21 April 1980

Facts are stupid things.
Ronald Reagan, 1988 Republican Convention

The truth is, all of the nuclear waste now on hand and yet to be accumulated between now and the year 2000, could be stacked on a single football field and the stack would only be six feet high.
Ronald Reagan, radio interview, 1978

All the wastes in a year from a nuclear power plant can be stored under a desk.
Ronald Reagan, in "Burlington Free Press", 15 February 1980

Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do.
Ronald Reagan, 1981

Just a few quotes from this guy. I was born during the beginning of his first term so I only know what I read and it's not a rosy picture.

2004-06-05 06:27:41 PM
Reagan's mental decline closely mirrored that of my grandmother. Painful though it was to watch, we didn't give trust her with the remote control for the TV, yet Reagan had his finger on the nuclear trigger. It was pretty clear to all and sundry that he didn't know what day of the week it was, yet the American public voted him in for a second term. I physically cringed when he called Diana 'Princess David'. That's what worries me about this November. Any clearly mental defective can be voted president of the US. It's not a meritocracy by any stretch of the imagination.

The Berlin Wall speech is one of the greatest addresses ever given by an American president. I've seen video of it as well; Reagan uses all his charisma and actor's training to make it an incredible performance, but more than that, he believes in what he's saying, and the conviction there is apparent.

/one of the three nice things I can say about Reagan

2004-06-05 06:28:08 PM
Mourn him all you like, death is death.

But don't use this opportunity to whitewash his Presidency and expect everyone to go along because he died.

It's not going to change the fact that his Presidency was questionable at best.

Some people feel they have the legitimate right to feel good that he is gone when concerning Reagans non action concerning AIDS and some of the actions that his Administration participated in as far as training some fairly brutal special police in South America.

People die, some are remembered fondly for what they accomplished and others not so much. What difference does it make here on Fark where I am sure none of his family or friends are reading any of this.

I know that it is culturally popular to mourn the loss of public figures, but this is one guy whose legacy is going to outlive him in a negative manner for decades to come. Everyone dies eventually, Reagan wasn't that damn special.

And it's no reason to suddenly forget the things he did wrong. The right wing Farkers should know better than to expect much sympathy for Reagan here on fark.

/I would much rather have seen some of Reagans legacy erased rather than the man, I thought he had died a long time ago.

He was a great president, mainly because he inspired confidence in himself and the government. But KDCA

what I grew up with.

What president hasn't had a scandal or two during their presidency?

The problem isn't so much the presidents themselves, but the oversaturation of coverage by the media these day. Every statement, every action now is scrutinzed and over analyzed these days.

All presidents shade the truth. This is different from lying...and in many cases it is necessary. Kennedy did it during the cuban missile crisis.

Fact is, people hated Clinton because he had no character. The man was an adulterer, which everyone knew when he went into office. He was investigated for sexual harassment, a CRIME in the U.S. During that hearing he PERJURED himself. This normally gets a lawyer disbarred, and MOST people go to prison for it. I could care less if he lied while executing the actual office of the presidency, as I know most presidents do.

As far as Reagan goes, he was one of the best governers of California ever. Everyone from there knew that he delegated authority, and did that well. He ended the cold war, and the wall coming down in Berlin can be directly attributed to Reagan. Those with no sense of history can make idiotic statements about his policies, but results are what matters.

2004-06-05 06:28:35 PM
ChrisPC:

that story is pretty remarkable. on the one hand, you see what a truly nice guy he was, and on the other, how badly his policies affected people like single mothers (like my mother, for example). that's why i say its hard to love the politics but hard to hate the man.

Old school Phish tune: Dear Mrs Reagan
Dear Mrs. Reagan, I hope you're feeling well

Fighting drugs and abortion will keep you out of hell
Send in the troops, they'll shut the system down
Take away their leaders and replace them all with clowns

Out in the Rose Garden, time for a speech
Make up your face so it looks like a peach
Aw, Nancy dear, what shall I say?
Tell ole Ronnie it's all OK.

Oh Mrs Reagan, Mrs Reagan
Gun your husband down
You'll collect insurance
Make our country sound

Dear Mrs Reagan, gun your husband down,
Save us from this awful fate
George Bush will be our next president!
Dear Mr Reagan, your hair is really swell

Buy another missile and damn the poor to hell
Pump up our resources,
You'll make us strong abroad
Foreign country leaders

Know that you're a fraud
Oh Ron, you're such a patriot
We think that you're an idiot
Everybody's singing this time

Oh Mrs Reagan, Mrs Reagan, gun your husband down,
Don't this let injustice reign,
It's Ron you must uncrown
Oh Mrs Reagan, gun your husband down

Send him out to pasture
His brain cannot be found

My personal favorite "oopsy" from the Reagan administration didn't actually involve the President directly:

Soon after Reagan was shot, the cabinet had an emergency meeting to deal with the situation. The Secretary of Defense was Caspar "Cap" Weinberger - a man who served in the army during WWII, but whose background was mostly politics, civil service, and business. He casually mentioned to the rest of the cabinet that he had raised the military's alert level.

The Secretary of State was Alexander Haig, who had been a general in the Army. As such, he was aware of the dangers and potentially disatrous consequences of raising the alert level - for example, prompting a reaction from the Soviet Union, which in turn could prompt a reaction from us, and so forth. So, he asked Cap exactly what he meant by "raised the alert level" - did he raise the DefCon? If so, to what?

It soon became clear that not only did Weinberger not know whether he had raised the DefCon or not, but also he wasn't exactly clear on what "DefCon" is.

This, of course, gets Haig more worried, so he starts pressing the issue, trying to get exact information. Eventually, Weinberger goes off to a telephone, and comes back ten minutes later, announcing that no, he did not, in fact, raise the DefCon. Phew.

This is according to a book by Haig.

I'm reminded of the comment Hunter S. Thompson made when Nixon died: "My mother hates Nixon, my son hates Nixon, I hate Nixon, and this hatred has brought us together." Thanks for bringing so many of us together Ron.

for the last time, reagan did not bring down the wall. gorbachev did, and even that was indirect at best. hungary opened its borders to the west, GDI citizens started flowing through hungary, a slippery slope forms, gorbachev won't roll the tanks because he already axed the berechnev (if i remember correctly) doctrine, and sooner or later the wall falls. of course reagan had something to do with it, but he can't be given the credit im sorry.

66 Things to Think About When Flying Into Reagan National Airport by David Corn

The firing of the air traffic controllers, winnable nuclear war, recallable nuclear missiles, trees that cause pollution, Elliott Abrams lying to Congress, ketchup as a vegetable, colluding with Guatemalan thugs, pardons for F.B.I. lawbreakers, voodoo economics, budget deficits, toasts to Ferdinand Marcos, public housing cutbacks, redbaiting the nuclear freeze movement, James Watt.

Getting cozy with Argentine fascist generals, tax credits for segregated schools, disinformation campaigns, "homeless by choice," Manuel Noriega, falling wages, the HUD scandal, air raids on Libya, "constructive engagement" with apartheid South Africa, United States Information Agency blacklists of liberal speakers, attacks on OSHA and workplace safety, the invasion of Grenada, assassination manuals, Nancy's astrologer.

Drug tests, lie detector tests, Fawn Hall, female appointees (8 percent), mining harbors, the S&L scandal, 239 dead U.S. troops in Beirut, Al Haig "in control," silence on AIDS, food-stamp reductions, Debategate, White House shredding, Jonas Savimbi, tax cuts for the rich, "mistakes were made."

Michael Deaver's conviction for influence peddling, Lyn Nofziger's conviction for influence peddling, Caspar Weinberger's five-count indictment, Ed Meese ("You don't have many suspects who are innocent of a crime"), Donald Regan (women don't "understand throw-weights"), education cuts, massacres in El Salvador.

"The bombing begins in five minutes," $640 Pentagon toilet seats, African- American judicial appointees (1.9 percent), Reader's Digest, C.I.A.-sponsored car-bombing in Lebanon (more than eighty civilians killed), 200 officials accused of wrongdoing, William Casey, Iran/contra.

"Facts are stupid things," three-by-five cards, the MX missile, Bitburg, S.D.I., Robert Bork, naps, Teflon.

Didn't care most of what he stood for, but he was a good man.
Trolls will be trolls, just ignore them. Also, some of you are generalizing libs from the few asshats not showing tact. Most of us aren't that way. The same vice versa. If Carter or Clinton died, there would be just as much of a trolling from your side. I know most of you aren't that way. They're either young or angry, or both.
Stop with the politics and agendas and give a moment of respect to the man.

Wow. I saw the first news flash link about his health when I got home. Took a nap, woke up, still groggy, and saw that he's dead.

Kinda sad. Didn't agree with everything he did, certainly wasn't the greatest president ever, but charasmatic, and responsible for thawing the cold war.

2004-06-05 06:37:23 PM
"think later"? No, I've been thinking about Ronald Reagan since he was elected. Ronnie sped up the process, while also padding the pockets of his defense contractor buddies, but he did not "defeat Communism in the 20th Century". Communism was a fundamentally flawed meme anyway; it mostly serves to mentally hog-tie the intelligentsia while thugs run the "Dictatorship of the Proletariat". Uncle Ronnie found a better way to hog-tie the intelligentsia - call them names and make the great unwashed laugh at them.

Ahh yes, the Great Communicator.

2004-06-05 06:37:42 PM
In this sense he was a lot like Lincoln

In the sense they were both pretty poor Presidents who history overrated?

2004-06-05 06:38:08 PM
biggest reagan myth: that he is responsible for the collapse of the soviet union.

2004-06-05 06:38:28 PM
In East Berlin before reunification (after the wall came down) I was at a kiosk drinking some wine on the street. This old East-German woman started asking where everyone was from (in German, the barmaid translated). Canada... she gave a cheer and a toast. Norway... another cheer and a toast. These Two American hippie-types say "America". She walks around to them, gives each of them a hug and says in broken English "God bless President Reagan", and starts to cry. I'll never forget that. I liked Reagan, but not all of his politics. He knew how to give a press conference boy.

"... We've just passed legislation to outlaw the Soviet Union. We begin bombing in 5 minutes."... hilarious

My heart goes out to his family.

I hope they can remember better days.
Rest in peace Mr. Reagan.

2004-06-05 06:40:37 PM
I guess it's easy for those of us born in the 70's to remember him as the smiling, jelly bean eating guy. Hell, I was 11 when Reagan was shot. We don't remember his policies first-hand, or the effects they had on society, we can only read about them now and understand fully what was going on then.

It will probably be the same for the children growing up in this administration. They'll just remember the smiling guy and not understand why, if they hear it, we call the guy an asshat at every opportunity (or is that just me?)

I guess I'm saying I miss the fog of innocence I grew up in. Being an adult sucks only in the sense that you really do understand what's going on now and how much better 'it seemed' to be when we were kids. That's why in my mind Reagan was a good President. He just smiled a lot, seemed like a nice enough guy.

I RIP'd Reagan above. Condolences to the family (because I KNOW they're reading FARK right now!).

/b-b-b-babbling but I had a point when I started =P

Holy shiat, stvdallas. That dog won't hunt, pal.

You're comparing Clinton's loose zipper to Reagan's long list of lies and scams? Really dumb.

You Clinton-haters are just going to have to learn to deal with the fact that Clinton's list of fake scandals don't compare with the real ones of Nixon, Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W Bush.

The truth hurts.

2004-06-05 06:41:31 PM
RIP Mr. President.

Thank you for restoring our pride and confidence. Thank you for having the courage to follow your convictions regardless of the resulting popularity. You took us from the incompetence of the attempted hostage rescue and the self-doubt after Vietnam, and restored our confidence, and the fear of evil-doers.

2004-06-05 06:41:44 PM
I don't understand how some of the Democrats on this board have such seething hatred for Reagan when the overwhelming majority of Democrats in office when Reagan was President actually liked the guy and thought he did a good job. Odd. Then again, I love revisionist politics. Hindsight is awesome, isn't it?

That said, may Ronald Reagan rest in peace and may his family find solace in the fact that he lived a full life and was a truly great American.

"peace through strength? Sure worked well on 9/11"

We were a paper tiger before 911 (those are bin Laden's own words), thanks to 8 years of limp wristed, "measured responses" to terrorist attacks on U.S. interests and a treatment of the terrorist threat as a "law enforcement issue." Since we began kicking ass again, there have been no attacks on U.S. soil in nearly 3 years. Peace follows victory. Peace through force. Like us, or fear us.

Rest in peace, Mr. President. You were a true American.

/Mr. Gorbechev, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!

He traded weapons to terrorists and got caught in the lie.

Either he did it on purpose, or he was so out of it mentally that his aides did it and just used him. Either way, its a sad story.

He traded arms to terrorists!

And you say hes the greatest prez ever?

2004-06-05 06:43:44 PM
I used to think he needed to have his face carved into Mt. Rushmore alongside Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson and Roosevelt (the good one, not the commie).

So silly of me, he needs his own mountain all to himself.

Reagan - greatest president of the 20th century.

2004-06-05 06:43:51 PM
Didn't this guy act in a movie once as the president? Something like that.
Hollywood mourns.

"I don't understand how some of the Democrats on this board have such seething hatred for Reagan when the overwhelming majority of Democrats in office when Reagan was President actually liked the guy and thought he did a good job."

Here's a theory: they're not Democrats, they just don't like the guy. You are aware that the vast majority of voters (let alone those eligable to vote) don't belong to either party, right?

2004-06-05 06:44:00 PM
This is probably going to get lost in the massive quantities of comments, but did anybody who was watching ABC notice that they kept referring to him as "President Ronald Reagan", without the appropriate "former" before it?

Maybe I'm just being nitpicky, but it doesn't seem right for them to say "President Ronald Reagan dead at 93". Just doesn't seem respectful, somehow. Maybe they're trying to capitalize on the drama as much as possible. Goddamn media blowing everything out of proportion.

That being said, Reagan was president when I was born, 1985, but George Bush Sr. is the only president I really remember. However, Mr. Reagan seemed like a good man, and I'm glad the suffering of him, and his family, is at an end.

2004-06-05 06:44:02 PM
I remember as a young'un being disappointed that he beat Jimmy. At least Carter was real.

I actually thought it was worth it to read this thread to the end before I posted. A lot of good sentiment here as well as the usual idiots. While I never voted for Reagan, I was usually relieved that he won against the Dem choices. As a disclaimer, my first vote for president was for Hospers/Nathan. If you know US politics, that should tell you how I voted.

Alzheimers is about the worst was to go that I know. We really need a euthanasia law here.

I am glad that the suffering is over for the family.

RIP Mr. President

Great, now they'll be trying to name everything after him. Prolly put him on the $10 bill now.

There's already a movement to put him on the dime. Nancy Reagan, among others, has spoken eloquently against the proposal - essentially, she says that while such a thing would be a great honor to Reagan, it would also be a great disrespect to FDR.

I was fortunate enough to be there for the christening of that ship. It was raining, the hershey bars in my mom's purse set off a metal detector, and the organizers were talking about holding a private ceremony indoors for just the high-ranking political people. But Nancy Reagan, God Bless her, said, "No. The ship is out there, I am out there."

Remember when Hinckley shot him, and he got out of the limo, walked into the hospital, waving to people...he gets in there and THEN collapsed. The man was a class act.

As a leftist Brit, RIP Mr President. And to his family my condolences.

I figured this day would come along and we would see this exact flamewar playing out on Fark.

I have to say, the Reagan worship and the Reagan hatefest are equally obscene. The idiots on the right worship Reagan as if he were a god, and attribute everything that is good in this country to him, ignoring the blatant missteps he made during his administration. The idiots on the left curse the guy for everything in this country and treat him like he did nothing good.

The reality is, the guy sent our spending through the roof, ignored a major medical epidemic, and traded arms for lives, but also was responsible for modernizing the military and started the move towards a simpler (though I would argue not any more progressive) tax code. The guy did things that were good and bad. I disagree with a lot of his policies, but at the same time, I'm sick of both the hero worship and the outright condemnation of the guy.

In other words, we basically have a bunch of ideologue asshats who can't see straight. Ronald Reagan was a man. That means he did some good things and some bad things.

I'm a TKE. That means Ronald Reagan and I are technically fraternity brothers. Now, while I disagree with most of the guy's policies, I'll still treat the guy with respect. If I happened to meet him while he was alive, I certainly would've been polite. I wish that type of attitude would spread to farkers left and right. Then we'd have less "Clinton was the devil" and "Bush is evil" blurbs and more actual content. I mean...farkin' a. If conservatives spent less time ripping on liberals for being the devil and more time explaining exactly what, if any, benefits come from supply side economics, or if liberals spent a reasonable amount of time explaining how social programs might help people, I'd be awed, to say the least.

Use your damn heads.

And stop worshipping/hating on somebody who was a mortal man. He lived. He died. Remember him for both the good and the bad, but treat him like a man who made both mistakes and good deeds.

Reagan was the first President that I realized was lying. Reagan was the first President who I realized was not only human, but dead wrong, so in a way, I should be thankful, because he helped shape the man I am today, and since I like that man, I can somehow come to say God Speed.

You Clinton-haters are just going to have to learn to deal with the fact that Clinton's list of fake scandals don't compare with the real ones of Nixon, Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W Bush.

What scandals happened during GHWB's administration?

I don't believe you people. The man died. The least you can do is respect him in the last things you'll ever say about him. It takes alot of nerve to sit here and insult a man who spend his life supporting this country, the least you can do is a simple R.I.P. I don't like Bush's politics but that doesn't mean I'll rip into him when he passes, it's just not right. It's simply immature.

Rest in peace Reagan.

2004-06-05 06:53:15 PM
Here's a theory: they're not Democrats, they just don't like the guy.

Correct. Reagan really lowered the bar and both Bushes crawled under it. Those of us that follow politics know all about Ronald Reagan.

Those that are posting silliness here about "greatest ever" and really showing their ignorance. It's not a party thing at all. I admire Reagan's selling skills for his image, but that's it.

The facts are there about how corrupt his administration was and how many of them are working for Bush now. If you just listen to Limbaugh or one of the other common propaganda outlets, it's no suprise you think Reagan is "great".

2004-06-05 06:53:28 PM
The best Reagan line of all-time was from his testimony to the Tower Commission; he was asked why his more recent testimony seemed to contradict earlier statements he made. Reagan consults his notes, grins, and replies:

"If the question comes up at the Tower Board meeting, you might want to say that you were surprised."

So, now that Reagan is gone, can the family of George Gipp--the real Gipper--have their nickname back???

You know, there's not a doubt in my mind that there a few leftist loons (notice I said only "a few") in this thread who are jumping up-and-down with joy at the passing of President Reagen. That's why I decided to bypass all of the other comments and simply comment in peace.

The fact of the matter is, Ronald Reagen is one of the greatest presidents, if not the greatest, of the last century. I have yet to see a president, other than Reagen, who was able to unify this country as much as he did. After all, he won 49 states in 1984, much to the chagrin of Mondale, I'm sure. This shows that President Reagen was, without a doubt, loved by both conservatives and liberals.
Need I mention that if not for Reagen, there's a good chance the U.S.S.R. would still exist?

To all the conservatives and liberals alike who liked this man and are bothered by some of the snide comments made by a couple of the left wingnuts above (there's an infinity symbol next to this thread, so I know such comments probably exist), I'd like to say simply this... Ignore them. If you feed a troll, they're sure to grow. This is probably common knowledge by now, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to remind people that trolls only grow worse and worse as more people respond to them. Pay these insignificant jerks no mind and let them go back beneath their bridge. You'll be happier for it.

Rest in peace Mr. President, and may God bless you!

Reagan - greatest president of the 20th century.

Bull crap. FDR was hands down the greatest president of the 20th century. I'll concede that Reagan was the greatest of our lifetimes, but most of his policies sucked crap (deregulation of the media, defecit spending, etc.) yet hastening the end of the cold war was an incredible accomplishment.

Goodbye, Mr. Reagan. Maybe I did not agree with everything you did or said, but I have to admire the courage of your convictions.. Compared to other politicans, you did what you said and said what you did. There was no illusory questioning of what the definintion of "is" was... what you saw was what you got.

Reagan's Challenger eulogy is one of the greatest speeches of the 20th century. It's really second only to "I Have a Dream." If you've never seen, heard, or read the speech, you must. This was Reagan at his best.

I grew up with Reagan. I was born in the Carter administration, but Reagan was President when I was a kid. That man, love him or hate him, knew how to be President. He was the first President to truly embrace the television medium and use it well. He knew that the President needs to have constant face-time with the country. Reagan was America, and you didn't think about the United States without thinking about Reagan.

You can tell the worth of a President by how the opposing party views him. A recent gallup poll revealed that Reagan's approval among Democrats was 32%. The first President Bush had a 23% Democrat approval rating and the current President has a 12% Democrat approval rating. Even among his political opponants, Reagan commanded a lot of respect. If only today's politicians would learn from his example.

While Reagan did a lot that I disagree with, I gladly concede that he was the embodiment of the President of the United States. All Presidents will be weighed against him for years to come. He set the bar.

I cannot understand how ignorant some of you people are. I can understand you not liking his polices as president, but that does not mean that you should be so rude to his passing.
I live in Missouri, I was very anti Carnahan, but when he died in that plane crash, I did not say a word of disrespect. At the time I was in a political chat room discussing the elections. I was the first to mention it to the room, after I heard the news flash on tv. Even all the die hard conservatives had comments to say in respect even though many of us were really against his politics.

Complain all you want, but regardless of who is in office, they are keeping us free, using all tools they have available.

Are you suggesting that those who don't like Reagan are somehow jerks/trolls? Your sentamentalizing of Reagan makes me much sicker than posts condemning him to hell, and that has nothing to do with my opinion of him. Why not say your honest opinion of him whether or not it's nice? Why lie or sugar coat? Why assume his death, or death in general, is bad? You are so stuck in your value system, that death is bad, should be mourned and sentamentalized, etc., that you don't understand that SOME PEOPLE AREN'T THE SAME AS YOU. Don't be narrow minded.

I agree...Reagan's Challenger eulogy is the first thing I remember when I think of his leadership and presidency. So much so that after the Columbia disaster, I wondered immediately how Bush would eulogize the astronauts, and how it would stack up to Reagan's brilliant address. As expected, I was disappointed with Bush.

I think George Bush Jr. is almost as good a president as Ronald Reagan, except without the charisma and personality. But the great results will be the same...a landslide second term victory, just like the one Reagan enjoyed! Is this a great country or what.

2004-06-05 07:09:40 PM
Just to rag on the Gimper for a bit. I disliked Reagan much. I'm old enough to have voted against him. Twice.

There was much to be said against the man. The wisecrack about bombing the Russians was on live broadcast. It might have started WWIII. This was just one demonstration of his stupidity.

Another one of his great moments was when he held up a big bag of cocaine in front of a TV camera and announced that it had been bought across the street from the WHite House, ushering in a massive escalation on the so-called "War on Drugs." One result of this is that we now have the highest imprisonment rate in the so-called free world. In fact, with teh demise of the USSR and the liberalizing in China, I think we even have them beaten now. As a foot note, it turned out later that the story about buying it next door had been fabricated by the narcs to his specifications, if not with his knowledge beforehand. It actually had come from somewhere else. Made great drama, though.

Then there was the Iran-Contra business. You remember when he ands his buddies sold a bunch of hight tech military equipment to middle-eastern terrorists in order to get the US hostages freed? I remember that. I laffed my arse off, because it demonstrated what a bankrupt bunch they were, Reagan and his gang.

The lost went on and on. I still remember the summit with Gorbachev. Ol' Gorby got scared shiatless when he relaized that with respect to the man who had his finger o the button, the lights was on, but there was nobody home...

Back from store. Got my champagne...

You hate the guy, you may hate the fact that people are ignoring what you deem to be very important facts. That does not give you a free pass to come on to my board and trash everything you like.

IMHO, many of the things wrong with this country now (environment, widening income gap, inappropriate corporate influence in policy, etc.) got accelerated during Reagan's time in office. Having said that, I always felt Reagan SINCERELY believed he was doing the right thing and helping make the country better. I don't believe that about the present administration.

Farewell, MR. President.

2004-06-05 07:13:31 PM
I just want to add that I'm too young to remember his time in office, even if I wasn't, I live in Canada and also, I've never, ever voted for a right-wing party. Also, I really hate W. and the republican party.

But from all I've read of Ronald Reagan, the man had ideas, passion and strength of will. Those are qualities I can admire in ANY politician. As a Canadian, believe me when I say that it's hard to make a nation believe in itself. So for that, I salute him.

Alzheimer's is a shiatty way to go. I hope his mind is resting now.

I think George Bush Jr. is almost as good a president as Ronald Reagan, except without the charisma and personality.

What? I am confused by this in two separate ways.

First, Reagan arguably was nothing but charisma and personality. He was extremely charismatic, but take that away, and what's left? "As good a president as Reagan except without charisma and personality" means "not a good president".

Second, Bush also lives and dies on his personality. One of the main reasons he won in 2000 was that he was viewed as "a real guy, even if he's not the brightest bulb". And today, we have his supporters pushing polls like "Would you rather go to a barbeque with George Bush or John Kerry".

2004-06-05 07:14:51 PM
YouDontSay: Unfortunately, being a jerk defies political orientations. There are jerks on the left and right. I'm also from Missouri, and when Mel died, there were a lot of conservatives making the "glad he's gone" cracks. The Carnahans were all incredibly kind people; I can't understand why anybody would deserve that type of disrespect. I'm glad to see a few sensible people visit here.

stvdallas: Clinton's scandals PALE in comparison to LBJ. LBJ was as close to a mob boss as we've had in the 20th century presidency.

And as much as some fanatics on the right like to paint the left as moral relativists, the right seems to be pretty relativist when it comes to lying under oath. When Reagan and his administration lied under oath to Congress about trading weapons for lives in Iran-Contra, there wasn't so much as a squeak. And when Clinton lies under oath about sex, the world stops. What's up with that?

Clinton may have been a goon, but the guy's presidency was hardly the "most corrupt" in recent years. Damn near every presidency we've had this century, from Bush to Clinton to Reagan, all the way back to Roosevelt, has been marked with a buddy-buddy relationship between politicians and businessmen and a use of the White House for personal gain. There haven't been any "clean" presidents for quite a long time.

This is the type of crap that I was talking about. If you want to give your respects to Frater Reagan, go for it. Don't waste your time hating on him or anyone else. This is a memorial thread, not a condemnation thread.

Jeez. Asshats.

2004-06-05 07:15:06 PM
No man is perfect. Every President has his faults. Every President did some good things. Every President did some bad things.

Bottom line is that President Reagan did far more good than he did bad.

Bottom line is that President Reagan was the right President during the time he was in office.

Bottom line is that this world is a better place because of the job he did.

That's the benefit of hindsight. Back in the 80's, lots of liberals thought about Reagan what you think about Bush. Give it a couple decades when al qaeda is just a memory and you will probably have a different opinion.

That's leadership.

I think that it honors a man's memory more to acknowledge all of his life, not just the good, but also the bad. It's more honest than the revisionist thinking about Nixon after his funeral, and the claims of Saint Ronny... I lived through that time, grew to manhood in those years, and even stood up to serve my country in those years, and it was with my eyes open, knowing that the man wasn't the Be All, and End All.

He wasn't a saint, he was the President. In the end, he drew pay from my taxes, which meant he was my employee, and I reserve the right to watch the performance of those whose pockets I put money into. I served, and did my duty, but to forget the wrong along with the right--and he did have a few moments of right, as most men do--is to forget any of the lessons that history might teach us.

This push to canonize our Presidents is dangerous. We pulled away from a monarchy as a nation to avoid just such drive. They are men. Men do right, they do wrong, they make mistakes, and to underscore and forget these mistakes is to throw away any chance at avoiding them down the road.

I watched his policies and his rhetoric tear large divisions in this nation. Turned his back on the sick, the poor, and pour money into programs to kill innocents in nations, to fund quiet wars, and I even got a chance to get shot at in a couple of the quieter actions that he started, and were carried on with his heir, George.

To forget these things is to forget history, and those who forget history, are doomed to repeat it.

Celebrate the good the man did, but don't commit the error of forgetting the bad as well. It doesn't service any, but those who would like you forget, and they don't want you to forget out of respect, they want you to forget so that they can continue what they do.

Josef Stalin had ideas, passion and strength of will, so did Idi Amin.

SO you're saying that I'm wrong for paying a dead president a compliment? You'd rather I sat around on the day of his passing comparing him to dictators?

Partisan or not, some of us don't do that.

"You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream -- the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order -- or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path. Plutarch warned, "The real destroyer of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations and benefits." -Ronald Reagan -October 27, 1964

May President Reagan rest in peace. He believed in America; believed the best was always to come. And America believed in him, by a landslide, twice. He was a gentleman, and he was genuinely himself.

For the last 10 years his family has had to deal with the tragedy of "the long goodbye." Nancy Reagan is a fine example of true commitment, loyalty and devotion. She was proud of him and loved him and stood by him all the way. It's so hard, as a caregiver, to hold on to the positive over the long haul. May she find opportunities of her own now.

Durng times of war and times of peace, death comes to us all someday. Respect paid to friend and enemy at the end of life comes from recogition of that simple fact. We, all who walk the earth, will breathe our last and shuffle off this mortal plane. Submitters of disrespectful comments should consider such ignorance a gift as well as a curse. A gift for not understanding just how fragile and perilous life is. A curse for not understanding how amazing and precious life is.

Ronald Reagan changed the world.

He did so with never ending class, dignity, quiet strength, and true redblooded belief in freedom and the American way.

Few Presidents have ever motivated the American people as he did. This country was a mess when he took office, and he turned it around like only a handful of Presidents before him. Love him or hate him, like it or not, he was a great American President, and a great person.

Important/unimportant things I remember during Regan's two term presidency:

I didn't know Ronald Regan was an actor until after he wasn't the president anymore.
(Yes, I did see Back to the Future, no the comment didn't seem to sink in. 'Who's the president? Ronald Regan, you mean the actor??')

The Max Headroom looking drug ads "You have Right to say No."

Ghaddafi

And when the Statue of Liberty needed repairs, and there were all the ads on tv asking for donations because Congress didn't want to pay for it.
Ronald Regan made sure it got done.

While Regan was president, we didn't have the same issues from Saddam as we did recently. Can someone with an objective and impersonal knowledge of politics please tell me if this would have happened had Regan been president?
Or was that just some kind of illusion that he wasn't afraid to push the button, and tell Saddam to stfu?

Are Americans as emotional about all their politicians? In most countries I have been to, politicians are regarded as a people elected to manage a country and execute a policy, and are not held in very high esteem by their opponents nor by the people who voted for them. They definitely are not a hub of attention even when passing away.

Regarding Reagan himself, I must admit alost total ignorance. I remember visiting the US once in 1984, and I was amazed by the number of homeless people in the streets. I have since been told that that was the result of some mental health care deregulation, or somesuch, which was led at a presidential level. But like I said, I don't know much.

/just wondering

I knew this would be a flame war.

Reagan was the greatest president of the 20th century and even if you did not like his politics, you have to admit he did a lot of good things for this nation.

God bless Ronald Reagan.

I admit to agreeing with you a bit. I wish Bush was better spoken. But as far as the barbeque goes, I would much rather pay for that Burger than expect it to be handed out to me for free, then learn to expect this time and time again. Self sufficiency is a good quality. And not taking crap from enemies is another one. Ronald Reagan is a true american hero.

A Few Ronnie Factoids that Conservatives Choose To Forget

..."the first ever to spend a trillion dollars on peacetime defense, the first to hold five U.S.-Soviet summits or witness a doubling of the national debt.

And that is how he defeated Communism. He outspent them, because he knew that they could not compete with us. Sounds pretty smart to me, or would you have preferred a confrontation in Europe?

He railed against federal spending but followed policies -- twinning a vast military buildup with tax cuts -- that more than doubled the total national debt and left succeeding presidents and Congresses to deal with the consequences.

And it was the right thing to do. That debt was paid off in no time due to his economic policies which permitted the American machine to run at top capacity, and create a huge increase in Federal revenues (liberals like to skip that part)

He abhorred bargaining with hostage-takers and called for an arms boycott against states accused of fomenting terrorism. But he also sold arms to Iran in a clandestine operation that mushroomed into the gravest scandal of his presidency.

Possibly.

He built a career on fiery anticommunist rhetoric and Kremlin-bashing, but developed an affection for Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in the course of five summit meetings.

Did you forget what Gorbachev did for the world, along WITH Reagan and Thatcher? Gorbachev had the foresight to see the writing on the wall and did all he could to bring a graceful end to the Soviet Union. He's as much of a hero as anyone else during the cold war.

His meeting with Gorbachev in Moscow in 1988 typified the ironies that made Reagan such a fascinating public figure for so long. Here was America's best-known anticommunist, the man who called the Soviet Union an "evil empire," doing business in the Kremlin with the political heir of Lenin on a chummy "Ron" and "Mikhail" basis."

And he also scared the living piss out of the Soviets in Iceland. They became friends because they did not want him as an enemy. He set an example that really irked the liberals, and didn't think twice about it because it was the right thing to do.

Ever had to deal with a bully? If you or your kids ever do, I suggest you follow Reagan's example. Kissing their ass will get you nowhere.

Sorry, I'm not going to participate in the flamewar except to say that I disagreed with Reagan on most things.

What I'm dreading is the unreasonable hero worship, Reagan is already worshipped as a god for reasons I don't understand.

I expect a resolution in congress monday to rename our contry "The United States of Reagan"

I'm glad he's dead, not because I hated him, but because alzheimer's is no way to live.

shipud --No, as a rule, we aren't that emotional about our Presidents. OK, JFK, there was a lot of emotion. FDR, a fair amount as well.

This thread demonstrates that folks often prefer appearances and public displays to truth. Better to be seen with the weepy eye, or the loving post, rather than be seen as voicing an opinion away from the herd.

This goes for the folks who are slinging insults as well.

Not all of them, I'm sure that there are some folks who lived through Reaganomics that have a serious problem with the man, just as much as there are men who were earnest boys with bright red ties as Young Republicans who have genuinely feel some tinge of pain--much like I did when Jim Henson passed, because he was a part of my childhood, and his passing meant that a piece of that innocence could never be recaptured again.

No, this thread just shows that there are lots of folks who would like to be seen giving an opinion, one way or another, to spite the folks that don't cheer for their side...

I was 10 years old when he took office, watch the whole assassination attemp thing on tv at the gradparents house (huge Rep. they were) he was funny and he was a tough sob.
when bush jr said he was going to bring respectability back to the oval office, Reagan was what he meant. The man was a great figure head.

I've always felt he was just the puppet/"actor" while bush sr. ran shiat behind his back. someone once said bush jr was not Bush part2, bt Reagan part3. He took a bullet(and was able to joke about it on the op table) at age 70 and rolled on for 2 more + decades. and the altzhiem's while sad, always seemed fitting after the whole "I don't recall" contra BS. He will be remebered as a great one only because his people write the books. don't really care for his drug war policies, trickle down crap, the "stealing" of the black vote, the fear laden childhood, ignorance to the aids epedemic or his wife and her BS but...

if you are any kind of descent American, or human, you just say RIP or nothing at all.

Condolences. I hope this quotes helps to palliate the unkindly.

Now that I curbed my misanthropic tendancies for that interminable moment, I can't help but point out those prognosticating Reagan's continuing health in an earlier thread actually managed to surpass Bush's ill-prophesied WMD and terrorists in Iraq. At least in the speed with which reality disproved spurious assertions.

Now you need to find a suitable scapegoat. After all, if your mentor deems himself above accountability for his decisions why can't you?

I was born in the Carter administration but was old enough to recognise the concern on my teachers face (odd that they happened when I was at school) both when Chernobyl leaked radiation over Europe (first reactions) and the Challenger exploded. Looking back I'd have to put his administration in with FDR's as one of the best in the 20th century. I don't agree with either of them, but as I age I am beginning to see that it's not so much the rightness or wrongness of the cause that is imporant but the ability to sell belief in something that is really what makes a great leader (in this country). Both of them had that gift, it's unfortunate that there was such a great divide occuring during the Clinton administration because he had that gift as well (and that's probably the nicest thing I'll say about him this year). Best wishes to his family (I know Mike really looked up to him over the last decade).

Rainy and Gloomy here in DC today, coincidence?

Part of my childhood has died. Respected him as a Prez, although I can't say that about the current Republican in power. Hopefully Bush won't play the sympathy card too much.

Cheers to a good man.

Reagan was the last President we had who was a leader, who had a vision of what the country should do, who honestly tried to take us somewhere instead of lurching from idea to idea and crisis to crisis. The 1984 election proved that the country wanted to follow.

He is one of two Presidents in my lifetime who I believe had good intentions. Carter, whom Reagan handed a well-deserved defeat, is the other.

But it was long past time for him to go. It's not the body that makes a great man, it's the mind. As far as I'm concerned Reagan has been dead for nearly a decade. I wouldn't wish his fate on anyone, not even Bill Clinton.

Reagan was an idiot but still a good president.

Bush is an idiot and still a lousy president.

2004-06-05 08:02:22 PM
I don't believe he was a good person. Evil? I won't say that. But I know that there are thousands of human beings lingering in jail to this day thanks to his drug policies. Hell, Carter wanted to decriminalize pot. The Reagan years were years of indulgence and opulence. He pandered to the rich, and gave the finger to the poor. Very Christ-like. He didn't give a god damned about the working class, even though he schmoozed for their votes, much as GW does today. He represented the worst element in society: greed. He was an actor, for god's sake. And not a very good one. And his own aides have come out and said that he was pretty much out of it by his 2nd term. But go on, by all means continue the stroke fest. Oh gipper, you were so great. You crushed and destroyed the lives of thousands of americans and didn't blink and eye. You broke the law and your entire defense was comprised of the statement "I don't recall." Bleh.

I knew a former CIA agent (who is now deceased) and he told me that Reagan was showing signs of Alzheimers as early as 1986. Yes, fellow Americans, we had an old demented man running our country for over 2 years.

If you knew anyone that called themselves a CIA Agent, they were full of shiat. Anyone with a lick of knowlege about the Agency knows that the Americans that work in it are Officers. Agents are the foreign spies that they run in foreign country.

Shenanigans.

Nope. Reagan was the jelly bean lover.

I went to his library a couple of years back. Amongst the gifts he recieved in office were several jelly bean related items (including a lucite cane filled with them) plus they sold Jelly Bellys there in the gift shop.

He was known to have a dish out during cabinet & other important meetings from time to time.

...Reagan was showing signs of Alzheimers as early as 1986.

This is an oft-repeated allegation but from everything I've heard it can't be true because Alzheimers works too quickly for him to be showing signs in 1986 but not diagnosed and showing serious symptoms until eight years later.

He was getting old and his second term was no match for his first. That's why I said in the previous thread that I wish he had won in 1976. Two terms with the energy of his first would have left this country much better off.

Hey Shipud,

No, there would normally not be such an outpouring for a politician. I'd say that Senator Wellstone (complete political opposite of Reagan) was the last large farewell.

Reagan was a true leader and an excellent communicator. He was also honest, and a very likable person. He lived by his convictions and beliefs, and like him or not, agree/disagree, everyone knew where he was coming from.

I think there is a difference between the US and the rest of the world when it comes to Presidents. We elect our leader directly, and as far as I know there arent any other major countries that do that. Most free countries have a parlament that elects the Prime Minister/President/whatever. For us, it's a much more personal thing because to a large extent, we put all of our eggs in one basket.

2004-06-05 08:13:17 PM
Good bye Mister Reagan, you will be missed. Your were the last presidential and respectable president that we've had, regardless of your politics.

2004-06-05 08:16:15 PM
My favorite quotes from Reagan:

"Republicans beleive that every day is July 4th,
Democrats beleive that every day is April 15th"

"Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

"We don't have a trillion-dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough; we have a trillion-dollar debt because we spend too much."

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidise it."

"Politics is not a bad profession. If you succeed there are many rewards, if you disgrace yourself you can always write a book."
