Glad I've never seen any of these movies except parts by accident when someone's playing the video. Such nonsense of other star's inhabitants after all that interstellar travel fighting with laser swords all day. Great trolling headline, Subby.

The problem is that the first time they remember seeing Star Wars was when The Phantom Menace was in theaters.

I think their other problem is that I don't farking care.

If anything peripheral to the thing makes you hate that thing, you are shallow.

2017-12-15 04:05:24 AM
I saw the first two films as a kid and even then didn't care for it much. That's all I got to say and I cast no aspersions on the fans but I just don't get into that world. I'm more of reality based Three Billboards at Ebbings kind of guy.

There's the ticket, dislike the fanbase as an excuse for your poor taste.

2017-12-15 04:31:08 AM
Every fandom has obnoxious people. You're going to miss out on a lot of things you might otherwise enjoy if that dictastes your tastes, and isn't necessarily an indictment of the fan base. It's a statement about how you want to be perceived by others. You're allowed to like a movie or video game without ever going to a convention or posting in an online community dedicated to it the same way you can like a band without ever having seen them live.

Im not into star wars, but handwaving any group of people based on something as trivial as what media they consume , where they are from , what books they read , what football club they are into or any such nonsense has always been the weirdest form of punching down I've ever seen.

Its like a really weird need to feel superior to something so badly that you try to associate whatever annoys you to a group of people that read or experience a show, how farked up is that?

2017-12-15 06:04:40 AM
And that's why the writer of that article can only enjoy watching his favorite movie, "A Serbian Film".

I had a friend in middle school who was SUPER into Star Wars. Like he was a walking encyclopedia of all the EU novels. I wanted to get that into it as well, but it just seemed like so much work.

I'm actually becoming that guy now that Disney has re-set the canon, and I started reading the books from the "beginning". (Seriously, the Young Adult books are insanely good. More than they have any right to be. The new novels are hit or miss - and "Aftermath" is just a big miss. Chuck Wendig is so awful.)

Aw, come on.  That's a bunch of horseshiat.  Lando Calrissian was a black guy and he got to fly the Millenium Falcon.  What's the matter with you?
Lando Calrissian is a positive role model in the realm of science fiction and fantasy.

See also: Doctor Who. Great show that I enjoy. But any sane fan of that show has to distance themselves from the cesspool that call themselves "Whovians". For such a progressive and family friendly show, DW has one of the most vile and hateful fandoms I've ever seen.

The backlash over the Doctor being female this time around was so disgusting that I no longer even admit to watching the show in polite company. But I still watch the show and enjoy every minute of it.

It does kind of suck that the more toxic elements of fandoms can ruin your ability to discuss the topic with other fans though.

Not to mention that the Rebellion/Alliance was always a multi-species, multi-cultural response to an explicitly speciest human-first Empire.

Also, Lando didn't just fly the Falcon, he used to own it too.

I like the original trilogy just fine.  The prequels, for the most part, sucked and were horrifically directed/acted and overstuffed with CGI.  I wasn't impressed with SW7 and I've lost any interest in future volumes.

I guess I'm not woke but I don't watch movies mentally counting the numbers of Hispanics, Africans, and Asians.

Particularly since sci-fi in general is white as the day is long.

I'm wondering how a certain character we all know and love managed to get from point A to point B part way through this movie.

That's like saying I could never enjoy a good salad because vegans are annoying twats.  Yes, the second half of that statement is true - vegans are annoying twats, and the uber star-wars fanbois are ridiculous and annoying twats too.  That doesn't mean that you yourself can't find enjoyment in something they like as well, be it star wars films (the good ones) or salad.

I think this isn't like he can't eat a salad (watch a movie) but can't go to a vegan restaurant (Star Wars con) or hold a discussion with them about food because they would be too busy criticising his leather shoes.

I get what he means about not feeling like can enter the world, even in short forays because of the extreme and sometimes unintentionally closed members who have their own words and if you can't speak with them, you aren't one of them.

However, this millennial's problem is that
A) He is confusing enjoying a salad with needing to be a vegan to enjoy salad. Luckily, he can still have a steak when he's in the mood, still wear leather.
B) Phantom Menace was his toe dip into Star Wars. Which would be like your first salad being a kale and quinoa with tofu. Unfortunately, his poor unhistoried mind tells him he enjoyed it.

I mean at the same time, context does matter.  There's a reason breakups ruin songs for people when the two contexts get tied up.

I've always liked the idea of Star Wars, but after ESB the reality has been terrible.

Too much Star Wars? fark off you young punk. We didn't have anything for a decade after Return of the Jedi other than a couple Ewok cartoons, West End Games RPG, and later, the Zahn books. While Trek was chugging along.

Much like assholes that think there are too many comic book movies as though cowboy movies and buddy cop films didn't dominate the box office for DECADES

So stop liking what he doesn't like?
Can't wait for his article on how he can't understand why people like "sportsball".

He'll write it on his mac book while listening to Yo La Tengo on his iPhone 10 with airpods at the local coffee shop. And I don't mean starbucks. That's too mainstream. He'll then uber the one mile home and relax with a meal of elevated toast with kale and avacado, a deconstructed cold brew coffee and an ice cold Coors Banquet.

I thought I was a fan, but this guy has seen more star wars than me, and he's not

2017-12-15 03:04:58 PM
I think I'd like Star Wars more if it was more than a pastiche of old serial tropes. The original, at least, cribbed from cool stuff like the Forbidden Fortress. The rest is doing what every property out of ideas does, which is just fan service. I'm okay with fan service, and I'll go to the new SW and enjoy it, but it won't be anything thought provoking. Fortunately directors like Guillermo Del Toro exist, and I can go see the Shape of Water too.
